Eurogamer Expo 2012 - General & Meet up thread!

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
Did anyone beat Hitman?

I killed the target. Managed to go unnoticed to the point i could walk around casually despite being the only person to not be cowering on the ground (they probably should fix that). Perfect assassination.

But then the game tells me I need to kill some business rival without any hint as to who that is (that's the problem with demos that lump you into the middle of a mission). I guessed they were referring to the drug dealer so I managed to kill him off and quickly hide him but that did nothing. So I was walking around with no clue what to do. I couldn't leave Chinatown, which I was assuming was done by going back through the big doors. So I just gave up shot the police until I died.

I'll caveat this by saying I own a 360 and Wii (which hasn't been touched for a while).

Best games I played:

Unfinished Swan - Everything I hoped it would be. Makes me want a PS3.

God of War Ascension - First GoW game I've played and it blew me away. Gorgeous to look at, buttery smooth, ridiculous fun. Makes me want a PS3.

Where Is My Heart? - It's very Fez-like, but done from a different angle. Hard to explain, but a complete mind bender with so much charm. Out on PSP now, hope it comes to other platforms.

IsoChronous - GENIUS! I can't even begin to explain it, but my god, give these guys a publishing deal because the game's amazing...and GENIUS!

Sokobond - There's an big issue with explaining what you do in this game and specifically how you break bonds, but even having no clue what I was doing I was having fun. Once I knew what I was doing, I still felt mentally inept, but it was still fun. Great puzzle game.

Nintendo Land - Makes me want a Wii U, but not enough to overcome the ridiculous pricing. For any family who can afford it, it's perfect. For everyone else (except the Nintendo hardcore), I just think it's a waste of time.

Worst games I played:

Dishonoured - Without a shadow of a doubt, this was a terrible demo to choose for hands on play. You're just dumped in a level with every power under the sun and no idea what to do. Being stealthy seemed nigh on impossible and I had zero fun with it. I wasn't even impressed with the milleu, because everything was just so jaggy and god damned ugly. It's now gone from possible purchase to definite rental.

Aliens Colonial Marines - A terrible multiplayer only demo which pitted show attendees (as marines) against well drilled QA testers (as aliens). Admittedly I'm not a multiplayer gamer, so I'm generally a bit shit, but if you're trying to sell a game, you do not play experienced players against noobs. Thankfully I only want this game for the single player (and maybe co-op), so I'm still buying, but nothing about the mp experience impressed me.

Worst game I heard about:

Zombii U - Terrible graphics, dated gameplay, gimmicky (pointless) use of the gamepad.

Best game I head about:

Rayman Legends - Awesome use of the gamepad, great gameplay.

Must've been a bug. I killed the guy, escaped, got a cinematic and the title screen came back up. Great demo!

So I was right to assuming going back out of the double doors should have triggered the ending.

Well at least I know I did it right and never got caught until I purposefully took my gun out in front of the police. Was pretty impressed that I managed to kill off the drug dealer while he was walking around with a police escort and not get noticed.

I admit I agree about the Dishonored demo, but I feel this may be because this sort of game does not demo well under the environment of the expo.

I was at the panel for Dishonored on the Friday and it was a definite highlight for myself, game looked amazing when played by someone who knows what they are doing and has learned the environments and how the powers work off of each other.
This is why I feel a game like Dishonored doesn't demo well at a convention like this.

MGR:Revengance was so good!

I seriously can't overstate how great the demo was. the controls are great and the combat flows so well, wrap that up with its superb presentation and i just cant wait for this to come out!

Seems like utter madness to put it on the show floor like this then. Either build a demo that's tailored to the environment or don't show it.

I'll see if the Dishonoured panel is online and take a look.

Really? it sound weird. Maybe the build not use any AA yet? E3 trailers was really clean. About DMC I'm surprised too. Don't suffer of any tearing on ps3 & smoother too with UE3? Seems too much a dream to be true.

Yeah, MGSR definitely looked a bit lacking in AA. It is no visual powerhouse, but looks nice overall because of the art.

Also with GoW:A, it feels it is smoother than GoW3. Framerate was very smooth.

Bit soppy, but the best part of the expo for me was meeting up with some cool geeks, chatting relentlessly about the games industry and eating delicious wagamamas.

*thumbs up* :)

I always seem to get more out of Eurogamer when I take the time to speak to Developers about their game. It makes most of the games I talk to them about go from: possible purchases to pre-orders.

Dishonoured - Without a shadow of a doubt, this was a terrible demo to choose for hands on play. You're just dumped in a level with every power under the sun and no idea what to do. Being stealthy seemed nigh on impossible and I had zero fun with it.

You have Time Stop, Posession and Blink at your disposal. I managed to complete the demo on my second run through killing no one and never getting seen only using blink! Like I said about Hitman to people it's a game which you need to methodically make your way through the level it doesn't suit to a loud environment with time constraints.

Rising is strange, from a few feet away, it looked absolutely incredible, but sitting right up against those big TVs it looked terrible. I would never play that close at home, so I'm sure it'll be beautiful for me.

I don't think anyone should play that close to a large screen. Probably why I don't mind just watching a game over someone's shoulder.

Oh yeah I played Super Smash Bros Sony with a stranger. We both walked away with the thought "what the hell was I doing?".

Totally disagree. The demo gave you a load of tools to play with and a nice area to play in. I stealthed it easily enough & got used to most of the powers after a few minutes. Possibly my game of the show!

It's actually a Mini (therefore on PS3, PSP, and PSVita), so yeah. Fantastic game though

Okay, which one of you was wearing an "all my friends are dead" t-shirt? Respect to that bro.

I was at the Expo for four days and luckily managed to get early early entry through a friend, which meant I was wandering around an empty show floor for a while, though half the games were turned off and playing Halo 4 MP by yourself isn't that fun.

I was first on ZombiU for two days, though, so being spared the three hour queue was great. I managed to play all the Wii U software, most of which didn't really need a tablet controller, but the few that did showed really apparent benefits. Nintendo Land surprised me by actually being fun, but I think I'd forgotten what it was like to play fun local co-op.

Hitman was disappointing because the demo level sucked.
Tomb Raider was pretty good, but I saw the whole demo like six times while waiting in the queue.
Dishonoured showed promise but I spent most of my time with no idea where to go to progress in the level.
Halo 4 is still Halo, so that's all I need to know - I won a really intense Regicide match, so it's still fun as well.
Grid 2 is the closest I've been able to find to PGR, so that's a win. Best time was about 3:40 on street race.
Hotline Miami was really addictive, so I will probably buy that.
Strike Suit Zero is great but I didn't get enough time with the gamepad. Joystick was really fun, though.
Forza Horizon and Need for Speed were so boring that I can't remember anything about them.
God of War something was just another God of War game and bored me to tears.
Rocksmith was really enjoyable. Going to bring my guitar up to London and maybe buy it.
Sim City didn't jump out at me, but that kind of game takes time to appreciate.

Yeah, that is how I feel. That was actually the same to a lesser extent with hitman. 2m away and it looked incredible, up close quite a lot of lo res textures.

No problem! Neat gig! Did you get to the event yourself at all?

Ubi deserve to kill everything else on the Wii U launch... Rayman > NSMBU for me, and I really enjoyed Zombi-U too.

If anyone wants to take any of those photos and reuse them, please feel free to.

Where people had put down their Twitter account or email account I was actually able to add a few randoms... they really need to get that Wii-U account system up and running on 3DS too though.

My streetpass boost probably could have been twice as high as this, but my battery died on the first day and I kept forgetting to clear out Miis that were already at the 'entrance'

Agreed, I really think Indies need to rope in some mates to come and help them show the game off.

Separate queues for ZombiU and the rest of the WiiU games. I chose to queue for the latter.

They had a seperate queue for ZombiU, only 1 or 2 stations
and you couldn't see it if you were just passing.

Silly Nintendo doesn't want people seeing it.

Unbelievable. Way to show of your No.1 launch game Nintendo.

I watched ZombiU from outside the barrier surrounding the Nintendo area, the stations weren't all hidden away there were some basically right against one of the edges. I just stood there leaning on the barrier and watched for a while.

The start of this video shows exactly the spot where I stood watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pppHDjBlOf8

I played it, was gonna post impressions along with other games later but I guess I'll just talk zombiu just now.

Honestly? I thought it was alright, and that was really it. The graphics are pretty subpar (seriously I'm not just trolling against wiiu or anything) it looks like a pretty mediocre 360 game technically.

The moment to moment gameplay itself is fine; melee and firearms standard for FPS but you'll be mostly using melee due to limited ammo and to minimise noise. I just don't see how they could maybe extend this experience for the duration of the whole game though, unless they really vary it up. I get the impression the game is just various scenarios, similar to L4D, where you make your way from your start point to your evac point with safe houses in between. The "dark souls" stuff is overplayed, as long as you are careful you'll be fine; you rarely encounter more than 3 zombies at a time. Lastly, the tablet is completely periphery to the experience, there is no reason I can see why this game can't be on 360/PS3/PC apart from the really tacked on scanner thing.

PS: Also I did finish the demo, but the impression I got from the rep was not many people did.

They had a seperate queue for ZombiU, only 1 or 2 stations and you couldn't see it if you were just passing.

Silly Nintendo doesn't want people seeing it.

No there was 5 or 6 stations for it, nevertheless they should have had more because this was the busiest game at the convention. Was it bad? No. Was it worth the 2 hour wait? Hell no.

I believe I took down your information off of the wall; I took down a page worth in my sketchbook while I was waiting for a friend to finish playing The Wonderful 101, and will sort out emailing people as soon as I get a computer again.

Also, there was a separate ZombiU "booth" within the Wii U area, with a sofa and everything. I queued up once in the big queue, played for five minutes, and decided it wasn't my thing.

Where Is My Heart? - It's very Fez-like, but done from a different angle. Hard to explain, but a complete mind bender with so much charm. Out on PSP now, hope it comes to other platforms.

There's a PC version in the works.

Edit: According to their blog they have the PC version to play at the Expo.

My mistake! I assumed it was 1 or 2 from when I looked down on the Nintendo area from the café upstairs - it only looked like 1 or 2. It's a shame I didn't get to see it being played - I looked around the area, but must've had my blinkers on and missed it.

Forgot to mention - I played Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS too - played a lot like the first which is by no means a bad thing. Excited to get that one :D

Am i the only one who noticed the staff on the Nintendo stand were reluctant to let people have the Gamepad.

Most lol worthy moment for me came on the Nintendo stand when the lady at one of the mario stations said "Who wants to be the green one" clearly not knowing Luigis name.

I really hate the whole 'get some pretty girls to hang around the place, even if they know nothing about games' ethos. I'd rather chat to a developer or another games enthusiast about all the cool demos than some airhead who clearly doesn't give two fucks about the games - and I saw plenty of those over the weekend, unfortunately. Sony and Nintendo were definitely the worst offenders.

I can't believe the lack of reviews of ZombiU in this thread. Did they hide the game away.

Two of my friends queued for 1h30mins to try Zombii U and hated it. Basic summary: dated graphics and gameplay, gimmicky/pointless use of the gamepad. They were far more impressed with Nintendo Land and the other offerings, especially Rayman Legends

Yeah, I tried it on PC, assumed it was just a dev box, but very glad to hear it's actually being released on PC.

They were fine with us sharing the gamepad around, but the vast majority of the assistants knew nothing about the console or the games and none of them could give us any useful details beyond what we know. There was one guy manning one of the panorama view pods who Nintendo need to give a permanent job to. He did a better job selling the device than any advert or hands on I had. Also, one assistant told me not all games will support streaming play on the gamepad. I assumed that would be a standard feature, but he may have been talking out of his arse.

I felt sorry for those manning the Panorama View pods. I mean there's not much to it. I only looked at it because no one else was and after a minute I'd seen everything it had to offer.

Most interesting aspect was that you could rotate the screen and the image kept it's orientation seamlessly.

It was obvious it was a contracted company. I admit I listened to conversation between the staff while I was waiting and it was clear they didn't work for Nintendo directly.

I actually had the Nintendo people trying to thrust the Gamepad on me continually. They seemed peppy enough but it is a shame that "looks" came before knowledge. But I was quite recognised in there by the last day and got to have some fun.

One of the guys wa told by the people who trained them that Pikmin 3 will be released before the end of March. I will take that with a very generous pinch of salt but will welcome it if true!

Essentially this, Rayman for me was also the best Wii U game I played too.

Separate queues for ZombiU and the rest of the WiiU games. I chose to queue for the latter.

I got to go into the general Wii-U section after playing Zombi U so it's not like you would have to queue twice. It's actually pretty disappointing (not because I was hyped for it but because I spent the better part of 2 hours queuing for it).

The controls feel very sluggish like the acceleration is messed up when turning. And a lot of the gamepad uses feel tacked on like using the motion controls to aim the sniper or crossbow instead of just using the analog stick. And using the touch screen to switch weapons or access your backpack and loot things just feels inconvenient. When you die your character is permanently dead and you have to make your way back to your zombified self with a new character to kill them and get your loot. It's novel and similar to getting back to a bloodstain in Demon's Souls but only one zombie that you've killed respawns (and I don't know why that particular one does when no others do) so it's just travel time instead of any sort of interesting challenge.

They were theatre actors and students and stuff. Two of them were talking about it in front of me, one of them had just done Carousel..

They do switch around from game to game btw.. even booth to booth I think in some cases. I thought it was a cool touch that the Wii U kiosks had a built in locker for the booth guy / girls belongings / handbag or what have you..

Zombie games aren't really my "thing", so I can't really give an objective impression. I just wanted to try it as an interesting and different concept to see if the extra £100 was worth spending out. For me, it isn't.

I'm gonna assume ZombiU will be a pretty good game, but it won't live up to expectations. Hopefully, we won't have a launch game as disappointing as Red Steel was and have Ubisoft redeem itself with a much better sequel.

Eh? Where did you see that?

See what?

Friend code board was tucked in the corner of the WiiU area.
Zombie Reggie was just a joke. But the guy who's dressed as a zombie and photographed twice did remind me of when Reggie's face was zombified at E3.

I have a feeling it's going to be just as disappointing as Red Steel was, which is a shame.
