Eurogamer: Switch VC plans include upgrade progam, VC engineered by NERD

I guess the real point of interest is: upgrade from where? The lineage is kinda murky now and they could conceivably be bought independently on different platforms.

How many PS3 games can you play on PS4? Serious question.

Better questions: How many of your Ps2 classics transferred to Ps4? Ps1 titles? Anybody....?

Wait people are taking this upgrade thing as a bad thing? No one was expecting any sort of discount program due to the major differences in Wii U/3DS hardware and Switch hardware... This is objectively good news.

Yup. Not touching their VC shit until it's account based and playable across systems.

The Switch will be their one and only system going forward. And your VC titles are already account based- how else will this upgrade program work?

They did carry over for free, you only had to pay the upgrade fee if you wanted additional features.

I meant to mention this also. Thank you. It's easy to forget playing the games on Wii U was free, just the save states/other features required upgrading.

Im assuming whne you have your switch linked up to your account you can see all the VC titles you purchased from both Wii U/3DS. Upgrade from there.

Also, if NERD are doing ALL the VC, I hope they fix the sound in their switch NES emulator - it was wrong on some stuff on the NES classic.

There it is, the Bait n' Switch!

Can't move over my VC games like the Wii to Wii U. Will have to rebuy all my purchases at a discounted price.

The emulators better be improved from what was on the Wii U. Eg. Option to not have blurry display.

They aren't going to sandbox Wii Mode again, so I would guess this would be limited to Wii U VC purchases. Games upgraded to the Wii U VC would be eligible I would assume.

And this is exactly why I never bought any more VC titles after the two or three I had on Wii. Paying too upgrade while every other platform lets you just bring it over for no charge (PS4 even gives you an upgraded version for free in some cases where that happened) is so backwards. Couldn't imagine doing that with a whole collection of VC titles every time. I'm sure the VC will be better this time around but do not trust Nintendo to reach into my wallet every gen to bring them over.

I'm ok with the Upgrade fee one more time as long as it's the last. With Switch these games need to follow the user on every Nintendo system.

I think part of what Somnid might mean specifically is whether only Wii U VC can be upgraded, or if 3DS VC can as well. We don't have any clear idea of if games exclusive to 3DS VC (GB, GBC) will be playable on Switch VC.

Beats paying full price. They do have to engineer a different emulator for the new hardware, so I get it.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but they only tend to make the emulator once and then it's done. They don't generally have to fine tune it or modify anything about the games themselves once the emulator is done. Although I do know that Nintendo tends to QA the games.

The cost and workload here is much less than, say, a developer doing a PS3, PS4, and PlayStation Vita version of a game. Each version takes dramatically different optimization to get right, and a ton of platform specific development hurdles to jump through. I've done it, it's not easy.

In that far more demanding development situation, the vast majority of the time if you buy the game on one platform, you own it on ALL supported PlayStation platforms. This is Nintendo trying to pretend to be "good-guy Nintendo" by offering a cheap upgrade option, but it's just money-grubbing in disguise. They can do it because they have the choice and we just sit by and say "we get it". Especially after the NES Classic debacle, we should be criticizing Nintendo for not being more pro-consumer and providing basic features competing platforms have offered forever. You don't rebuy apps for a new iPad. You didn't rebuy your Xbox 360 games after the insane amount of work that went into the 360 emulator for Xbox One, why should I have to upgrade my ROMs?

Who says they're not doing that for Switch? This upgrade fee is for games you bought on Wii U.

There's zero reason to believe if they're not using the unified account system to allow for free transfer of game licenses now, that they'll start doing it for games you bought on Switch. Again, using my PlayStation example. There's lots of games that came to PS4 or Vita way later, and just because you had already owned it on a previous PlayStation platform they immediately gave it to you for free.

Again, just to reiterate. They don't *owe* us this, but it's incredibly shitty for them not to do it when the account system is in place and it's an established concept on many other competing platforms. We shouldn't be so complacent with it.

How many PS3 games can you play on PS4? Serious question.

I don't know off the top of my head, but there are a lot of indie games that are available on multiple PS platforms, and the vast majority are playable on all once you've bought it once. This includes PS1 classics that you bought on PS3, and then were immediately playable on Vita. Let me put it this way. I bought a Vita, and without spending an additional cent on games I had 30+ games for the thing the instant I linked my account to it, all things I'd bought on PS3 or PS4.

They aren't going to sandbox Wii Mode again, so I would guess this would be limited to Wii U VC purchases. Games upgraded to the Wii U VC would be eligible I would assume.

I think his point was more about WiiU vs 3DS. Let's say I owned Super Mario Bros 3 on my 3DS, and I owned a Link to the Past on my WiiU. Will we be able to get this upgrade discount on both of those games, will we have to choose one of those platforms to use as the platform we upgrade from, will we only ever be able to upgrade from just the WiiU?

I'm ok with the Upgrade fee one more time as long as it's the last. With Switch these games need to follow the user on every Nintendo system.

Why would it be the last though? I've keep hearing the Nintendo finally have a proper account system and yet this just keeps happening. They can go that way if they want but I honestly just can't imagine paying yet again for this stuff

Remember guys that they could offer no upgrade possibility.

Switch is a totally new console, and how often you've been able to play your digital games on a next generation? Ah, someone already made this argument...

Things were muddier on Wii U, because you could always use the Wii mode to play the games you already bought. It kind of didn't made any sense to take money to upgrade, but then again it was purely optional. Switch is totally different from that.

Oh hell if we can't even get the opportunity to get out 3DS games whats half the point?

You know what, I can live with an upgrade fee. But really the big issue is VC pricing. 5 dollars for an NES game I own on over 3 platforms doesn't really cut it for me anymore. These games have been readily available on 3 platforms now, with Switch being the forth. They lower the base price of all VC titles and Im cool.

$5 for SNES
$3 for NES
$5 for GBA

They lower those 3 platforms prices and I will happily dip with upgrades as a possibility in the future for me.

Yea I also stopped buying WiiU VC titles for fear of upgrade fee, and the fact that if I bought it on WiiU, I couldn't play on my N3DS even though it's the same NNID account.

However, if the emulation is good, and there are options to adjust quality/smoothing, etc. AND the price is not crazy, I could deal with it to play VC stuff on the train.

I'd be angry about the upgrade fee if Sony didn't show what happens if a company has no financial incentive to keep a library going.

The lack of PS1 and PS2 Classics (outside of the handful new PS2 games for double the price) is still probably my biggest gripe with the PS4.

They're a little dark but I don't know that they're as bad as people say, and apart from that they're not bad... you can always adjust TV brightness, the GBA games for example are much darker in screencaps online than on my TV's default brightness and look very good.

Did I seriously just read that you suggest to brighten the TV to compensate for the incompetence of Nintendo not able to emulate the NES correctly?

Upgrade program? Wish Sony would offer something like that, if the rumors of licensing being the primary issue of PS1 games on PS4.

I'll upgrade because I understand that development isn't free and I want to continue to play my VC games.

Stealth Edit: as long as 3DS VC games can be brought along as well as Wii U VC. Not all of us have a Wii U

This is what I assume. If you own it on either it displays a discount but their ability to merge this data has be questionable in the past.

I wonder if NERD working on the VC will actually improve the rate at which games come out, for all platforms.

If I recall correctly Nintnedo typically would design an emulator for each game specifically, rather than an emulator program for the entire platform, which was apparently done in the name of quality. But I really don't see why designing a single emulator for each platform and then releasing games in bulk running on those emulators would sacrifice any bit of quality.

NERD being behind this makes me hope they understand how to do VC far more efficiently than whoever was behind it previously.

I'm not sure how fast they work but they at least of 30 NES games ready to ship from the NES mini.

That's good to hear. Now the only thing to worry about is the release schedule of these games (especially in the NoA territory). I don't want to start from the bottom with NES black box games and wait months/years for the good stuff yet again.

Both Nintendo and Sony are fucking up their classic digital purchases, IMO. Instead of breeding digital platform loyalty like Steam does they want to milk their current users for repurchases of already bought goods. Short term that makes them some pocket cash but long term consumers won't trust their digital library will follow them system to system and may not invest as much as they would.

Bottom line, if my account is tagged with buying Mario (NES), any system I log into that supports Mario (NES) should let me download and play for no additional charge. Anything beyond that is unacceptable IMO.

I'm not paying an upgrade fee as I'm content with my wii as my primary virtual console device. I'd buy new titles that don't have a previous vc release on the wii/wiiu/3ds but I'm not rebuying or upgrading a damn thing.

My Xbox One plays the majority of my digital 360 collection

And without a bullshit upgrade fee too.

I can't believe some people are defending this when we have microsoft doing an incredible job bringing 360 games for free on xbox one.

Shoot I forgot about this. I have a feeling Nintendo will be much better at bringing over VC titles. Just hoping they get 3rd parties back on board.

Wait BC also includes digital on Xbox? I didn't know that! Yeah now this kinda makes my want for free VC cross-buy a bit more justified.

Please! It was always frustrating during the Wii/Wii-U/3DS era to see announcements of Virtual Console games. I would buy a game I wanted straight away and then wait for the next "big" thing to hit... and wait.... and wait... and wait...

I really want them to knock it out of the park this time; They can start by re-branding from Virtual Console to Nintendo Classics just to clear the air a bit. After that, I don't want to see months on end where we get nothing of note.

God, fuck upgrade fees. The games are being emulated.

I was really hoping Nintendo would change their ridiculous digital policies with the Switch.

I should be the most hyped about the upgrade program because in all honesty I figured they could just start from square one from the Switch and then have everything after that be compatible

but I'm most hyped about NERD being behind the VC. they've got a nice little track record going right now. expecting pixel perfect mode now.

It's scary to see how many people are wanting to throw money at Nintendo with these BS upgrade fees. Can you imagine the backlash if Apple charged you to upgrade your apps when you buy the latest iPhone, iPad, iMac, or Apple Watch? Stop pandering to this crap.

Geez, I at least hoped that the upgrade policy would be something like a fiver to cover everything at worst.
Even that was wishful thinking.

Yeah, it's a absurd. 😩

I'll pay whatever but God I hope this is the last time.
No incentive to do so when you get millions of users paying $2 to upgrade.

Going to be fun upgrading the entire catalog of vc tittles. 🙄

Literally nobody thought you could even upgrade your purchases on the Switch. Everybody assumed, since it's a brand new platform with a wildly different architecture and account system, that you would have to rebuy everything at full price, because they have no way to transfer your data from your previous devices.

This is most definitely progress. Especially if it's something like the Wii>Wii U upgrade fee was, which was about $1-2 max. The people complaining about this clearly have no idea how Nintendo has treated the virtual console previously.

That could easily be the case- we don't know yet what the plan is. The example in the OP is what the upgrade fee from Wii to Wii U was.
