But since it's gypsy music it won't do well at all. Europe hates anything Romani.

As a matter of fact gypsy music is quite popular, at least in France. One of the recent winners of the Voice (and still loved by youngsters) is known from that genre. Also Thomas Dutronc was very successful and heavily inspired by Django Reinhardt (who might be the origin for that love of gypsy music, or "jazz manouche" as we call it in his case).

Last time someone sent gypsy music was the Czech Republic some time in late 2000s, and they got 0 points in that semi.

...

Does Portuguese pop exist? Is that a thing? Or is all of it just Fado-esque.

edit: first eight contenders

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ISHwwHK-_M - zzzzzz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps6XHY5YTuo - Meh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP7C0LVNwuI - It seems the singer is good but the song isn't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GWfCoSA8Ew - zzzzz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrgU1WAjp60 - I'd say to go with this one if it wasn't in english

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Dp-UM24q0 - What? Is this really new? It seems like something pulled out from an eurovision song from decades ago..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI921ZByQY0 - Nope, there's something I don't like when they all sing together.

All is crap, jesus what a trainwreck

Oh god it's really bad. Well another year Portugal won't get to the finals, I mean, maybe you can get there if you send Lisa Garden but that would be sad.

Edit:
It seems it's down to four now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7Dp-UM24q0 - Amar pelos dois - jury liked it smh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI921ZByQY0 - Nova Glória - people's choice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps6XHY5YTuo - Poema a Dois - This one is not as bad as the others, but it's still bad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP7C0LVNwuI - O que eu vi nos meus sonhos - sorry, I don't think this is going to be it

In noiserv we trust he can save this mess in the second semi-final

Funny how "Marcia" just crashed and burned on this, given how good musician she can be

Wait, there's a second semi-final? Why did I listen to all this bad songs then? Don't bother with any of these, choose the song from the next semi-final, it can't get any worse.

Malta's contest was genuinely bad this year. The only song that sounded reasonably contemporary was Bombshell, even if they gave Maxine Pace basically the same song last year. But she's like 17 or some shit and performed way better than most, so she's got a good future.

Hungary picked a good song from a bad bunch. More than anything else it's actually interesting, unlike the stream of schlager ballads that have already been chosen. That quality helped Jamala win last year and will probably guarantee him a finals appearance, but I'm skeptical that rap and a strong Romani vibe will resonate across Europe. Or maybe I'm still salty about real-life Gerudo Sofi Marinova bombing :(

I really like Kewbka, if only because it's in Maltese language, though it also has a pretty emotional vibe that I enjoy in ballads.

Redmond's Baby
Omar Naber won Slovenian super final

Finally a complete defeat for Raay, the founding member of Marraya,

I won't be able to watch Melfest until tonight (American time) but the big shock a few days ago was that Loreen took third in the audience poll during the rehearsals... If she wins Melfest and goes to Kiev she's almost certainly a top 10 and probably top 5 finisher.

Had no idea Loreen is competing. She's my favourite Eurovision act and has a pretty good collection of songs. I'd like to see her do well again.

Wait, I remember that blonde girl. Is her song basically the same from last year? It sounds the same.

Seriously Sweden, if you don't pick Loreen I'll tell the Finns they're cooler than you.

You have been warned.

Well, song nr1 was clearly the best

Damn something has happened with Loreen, she looks.....different

Atleast she's going to second chance. Song nr1 is my favourite to win the whole thing

Wait, is it aleady decided?

What is wrong with you, Sweden?

Wow y'all weren't kidding, the song looks and sounds fantastic and I'm glad her voice was good. I admit I was skeptical when I saw the list of writers and thought they dumped another boring campy melfest schlager on her like they did to Charlotte Perrelli her 2nd and 3rd times.

It sounds fresh, it sounds relevant, and most importantly it sounds like Loreen over the past few years. I like.

It looks like the results followed the audience poll though :( Melfest has only had one Andra Chansen song win, that awful Robin Stjernberg song in 2013.

Christer Björkman has been good about making Melodifestivalen a testing ground for Eurovision winners but the downside is that anything that deviates slightly from the boring Swedish norm gets shafted :(

This was always going to be the most interesting heat so I hope the other songs are good, at least...

I liked Loreen's song and performance, but it doesn't seem Eurovision-y to me. I still think she will get to the finals in March, though.

Thats like native american singing together with an american

I think its beautiful

I'm talking about the tempo. Two different songs intertwined in a bad way. It's beautiful on paper maybe but not so much as a song.

And why on earth did that forgettable pop country song get into the final?

SWEDEEEEEEEEN

I admit her performance was a tad pretentious. But this is Eurovision. There's room for half-naked Polish women and Swedish pretentiousness.

While I'm at being disappointed in Sweden, this should've won back in whenever it was competing.

The reigning champion of Eurovision has a dark and expressly political song about death and humanity with a chorus sung in Crimean Tatar that had zero chance of being a radio pop hit. There will always be Eurovision voters who like "Color Of Your Life", but songs like Amina's "Love Injected" can do well if performed well. People thought the great "I Feed You My Love" from Margaret Berger was too edgy for Europeans but it did great.

yes stan, it was depressing to watch Sweden's indifference to her as the international juries brought her to the finals :(

Now I looked up when it competed and it was the year that opera singer won.

Ugh, Sweden. I love you. Why do you want me to hate you.

Is Statements available for purchase yet?

Touché. I never expected that Jamala would end up winning with that song. Also there was Hard Rock Hallellujah 10 years ago, which wasn't something expected to win.

Aren't there too many people on stage?

Is this the weird music show that had the epic sax guy?
Yes, yes it is.

Does anyone else not watch anything Eurovision until it's on?

I really like not knowing anything on the night, and seeing all of the countries' acts for the first time.

Did the same until I found EurovisionGAF lol. It's fun to guess who wins and all.

Same.

I haven't liked it as much since they brought in the semi-finals which you have to watch for the bad (great) stuff which gets knocked out, but Eurovision isn't something you really want to inflict on yourself again for the final with the most entertaining stuff usually gone.

I'd rather have it all in one go, and the badder the better.
