Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

I hate to say this but we're reaching the point where Smash is becoming the main draw for EVO. SFV better not drop the ball.
It's not true at all though, Stream views are still beaten by both Marvel and SF. Smash is definitely a big part but it's not the main draw by any means.

That's not true. Marvel had less viewers than Melee last year. Only SF4 beat Melee's viewership.

My guesses are...
  • Street Fighter V
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Killer Instinct
  • Tekken 7

This, but also Pokken.

Nintendo and Namco are both sponsoring EVO. Nintendo's going to want their big fighting game for the year on the main stage.

UMvC3 will stay on because it's Mr. Wizard's favorite game.

Why drop Melee?

It gets a crazy amount of entrants, a huge amount of viewers (more than basically every other game at Evo), and is still incredibly popular and active.

I don't like Smash, and I don't like having old games on with sequels. Takes up too much time on the main stage. Do side tourneys or whatever, but not as a main event. As unfeasible as it probably is I'd rather have Pokken as a game than Melee.

My Predictions:

DUH

SFV
MKX
UMvC3
Sm4sh

ZUH?

USF4 - Even with SFV taking over, I believe there is still enough interest and playerbase to show up for the game that essentially lit a fire underneath the FGC's ass. It won't be going anywhere.
GGXrd Revelator - Guilty Gear brings in larger US attendance compared to other anime games with nearly 1000 entrants last year, and really, when you have the most infamous fuckup from last year under your belt, a return would be expected, if not demanded.
Melee - If it wasn't for Melee, Sm4sh may not have even been considered. Plus, it's still the main event at a lot of Smash community events, and it has a larger playerbase then Sm4sh that shows up to these majors, even though it has been considerably neck and neck as of late. PLUS, It's Melee's 15th anniversary, not like that really matters.
KI - Not the strongest game, especially nowadays, but it has its fans, and a Season 3 in progress. Probably one more reasonable year left.

That's the certain titles for me. As for the rest of last year...

BUH?

P4AU - The game at this point just isn't relevant anymore considering there's a better chance of another version with P5 characters included being released on console than there is of the console version getting the 2.00 update.
Tekken 7 :Fated Retribution - Really hard to say. I'm sure Namco Bandai/Markman want it on the docket, but I would not be surprised if Pokken Tournament is favored, since it's the 20th Anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, and it's actually on console despite being a pain in the ass to set up for local play. Hasn't stopped Gundam Full Boost from happening.

Also they better give Smash 4 Sunday finals this year

The fact that Smash 4 got more entrants than Melee and was relegated to a Saturday finals was complete horseshit

With the hype and viewership they bring (just look at Genesis 3), coverage from ESPN starting and the neverending (growing, even) activity from both games, neither Melee nor Smash 4 are getting dropped this year.

Given that they both had insane numbers of entrants they should've both been on Sunday, but we all know that there'd have been riots if they did that.

-REVELATOR- is basically a given. That said, it's not at all likely that they'll suddenly drop to only one anime fighter with Xrd. UNIEL would be nice, but I'm not counting on it, with the lack of a port for [st] not really being relevant at this point. BB seems more likely, though since Arc's focus is on arcades right now for Central Fiction, CPEX would probably be it.

I don't picture P4AU coming back, especially with Atlus continuing to be wishy-washy about 2.0 for consoles.

Fuck that! I already hated enough how long I had to wait for SF to being because Smash takes forever.

My prediction:
Killer Instinct
Mortal Kombat X
Tekken 7
Marvel
Smash Wii U
USFIV
Guilty Gear Xrd- REVELATOR
Melee
SFV

I think this will be what Finals would look like.

My guesses are...
  • Street Fighter V
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Killer Instinct
  • Tekken 7

This will probably be it, maybe without Ultra.

I mean sucks for you, but Melee brings in the money and the viewers, so it's staying. It's the second biggest game at Evo.

There were already riots for it being a Saturday slot which was complete shit town 3000 since games with not even half the amount of entrants were dignified with one.

Really hope they get the priorities in order this EVO.

Pokken has a LAN mode, right?

Re: Melee

Yes it got a lot of entrants and viewers last year, but it was also the first year for Smash 4. The game is 15 years old. The Melee resurgence definitely happened but it's clearly waning again (Smash 4 is now on par typically) and eventually it's going to dip back down into not being -the- thing. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I find continuing to make a 15 year old game a main game on Evo is a waste of a spot. We don't still have Marvel 2 or Third Strike. Bring them back every now and then? Sure...but not every year. Smash 4 is enough of a draw for Smash players and I'm pretty sure it got more entrants last year anyways.

And whatever "vault" there is, CRTs are still and always will be a hassle compared to just a HD screen setup that is used for literally every other game.

Pokken will need to prove itself in NA before it has a chance to be in Evo.
Maybe if this was like back in 06 when we were struggling to fill in the games.

Exactly. I love SF, but don#t want to keep SFIV around for the next 10 years next to SFV.

I'm genuinely curious, because I hear this argument all the time and it makes sense, but how many entrants/viewers would MvC2 and 3S get? Have their been any tournies recently where they had a decent presence? I'd love to see them at EVO because they're amazing games, but if they don't get the entrants and the viewers I won't argue for them.

Melee still gets more entrants than 4 in general and last year there was barely any overlap of players between both. Taking away Melee would literally be taking away about a thousand players.

I prefer Smash 4 over Melee and even I know this is patently false. Smash 4 has gotten roughly half the amount of entrants as Melee in the last few majors with one notable main exception being MLG World Finals which was never really Smash centric. Most nationals are still ingrained in Melee history and the numbers are far from waning especially since Melee is still used predominantly in the event trailers.

Smash's situation isn't comparable with other fighters mainly because unlike most fighting game franchises it's proven to have extremely little overlap between games.

Close to two thousand actually. And I don't even know how many viewers (and what % of those viewers subscribed for the premium service).

Melee brings in big bucks for EVO.

http://shoryuken.com/2016/01/09/pre-cooperation-cup-2016-streaming-live-from-odaiba-tokyo/

90 teams of 5 is 450 players, had some international entries. No monetary prize, straight up 3S love.

Numbers for EVO 2015:

Ultra Street Fighter IV – 2227
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 1926
Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1869
Mortal Kombat X – 1162
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- – 968
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 816
Tekken 7 – 458
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax – 437
Killer Instinct – 397

So yeah, Smash 4 got about 50 more entrants, so not a significant amount more by any means. Melee still got more viewers, only being beaten by Ultra. And you can see that Melee is, by far, more popular than everything below it. Dropping it means a LOT of money left on the table.

Pokken doesn't need to prove anything when Nintendo and Namco are giving EVO money.

True. Money is probably the only reason a game like Killer Instinct is still around.

It is not "clearly waning" again, especially when Genesis 3 just happened and Melee had 800 more entrants than Smash 4 did. It's still not on par with Melee at every event. Marvel 2 and 3rd Strike are not played by thousands of people, they aren't run at major community run tournaments, they don't get the thousands and thousands of viewers that Melee gets etc etc. Those are all the reasons Marvel 2 and 3rd Strike are not run at EVO or any tournament anymore -- the people who do play those games still? They are way way smaller in comparison. I'd say they're probably on-par with Super Turbo and if they were ever to be run at an EVO they'd do a Tournament of Legends type thing for them but clearly that's not happening.

Smash 4 is not enough of a draw for all Smash players. There is very little overlap between the two games, both in spectators and players. Melee always gets way more viewers than Smash 4. There was a statistic of around less than 25% of players entered both games at EVO last year. That's a really small amount out of 2,000 players. It is stupid for EVO to ignore the amount of unique players both games bring to their event.

They're not dropping Melee.

Would be interesting if EVO did drop USF4 and a Smash game.

SF5
Smash (Melee or Wii U)
UMvC3
MKX
Xrd Revelator
Tekken 7
KI

Could probably run KI and Tekken 7 Finals on Saturday

Sunday finals would be:
Xrd Revelator
MKX
UMvC3
Smash (Melee or Wii U)
SF5

KI at least has some hope for more people this year with the PC version. I know that PC isn't exactly the number one home of the FGC, but it's better than it being an XBO exclusive. That plus season 3 could lead to a decent bump.

I love watching KI so I'd love to see it stay at EVO, but yeah if it doesn't get bigger numbers then I don't see any reason for it to get anything other than a side tourny slot.

I can't believe people think SFIV will just vanish. It isn't going anywhere. As long as it is getting viewership, it's staying. SFV is surely going to take the big Sunday Finals spot. But that doesn't mean SFIV won't be around.

Genesis 3 was last week. Melee had 110k viewers and 1840 entrants vs Smash 4's 1098 entrants. "waning" lol

Melee will be back. It's the biggest fighting game right now. Even Street Fighter doesn't get 1800 entrants at a non-Evo event. Melee has numerous 1000+ entrant tournaments every year.

Street Fighter V will obviously be the main event. Ultra, Smash 4 and Melee will return because of the crazy numbers they did last year. Marvel will be back because it's Marvel.

Beyond that it's a crapshoot. What if Pokken blows up big between now and Evo? Imagine the salt if three kiddy Nintendo games make it onto the lineup?

KI will probably get in because of Microsoft cash money

Put SFIV and Melee finals on Saturday. Or put Wii U on Saturday. So long as both games aren't on Sunday for variety

No brainers:

Street Fighter V
Ultra Street Fighter IV
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Mortal Kombat X
Tekken 7

Probably:

Killer Instinct
Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

Maybe:

Pokken (probably a side tournament by Nintendo at least)
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

smh @ people who think SFIV is going anywhere. It would probably be the 4th biggest Evo game for the next 5 years.... unless SFV is a SFxTK type misstep.
