Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

Didn't they just change it to 3 stocks and 8 minutes recently? What have they done to speed up play?

The meta has simply evolved, stocks go by a lot faster. Genesis 3 Grand Finals went by really quickly and easily became a good case for 3 stock advocates. We'll see how 3 stocks go at BEAST 6 but from now until EVO they have plenty of time to refine the rules by studying the other majors leading up to it.

Really want to see how Pokkén performs at an event like this. It's probably going to have a healthy life, anyway, because of PKMN World Championship, but it'll be a way to see if a LAN game setup can hold its own at EVO.

Nah, SF games gradually bleed out, but every one of them still retains a decent sized fanbase.

Except SF1 of course. and SFxT.

I always thought when it comes to SF games, each new iteration of a numbered series replaces the previous. ST/3S/USF4/MVC3 being the tournament standard for their numbered series whilst A2 and A3 being so different and divisive they are the exception to the rule. Other fighters generally have new numbered games being the tournament standard e.g MK/VF/Tekken

On top of the meta evolving, they've reduced the effectiveness of shielding and rolling, along with making moves on basically every character on the roster faster to either start up or end. They also gave more characters easier access to kill moves (like Charizard). A few characters also move or fall faster (Mewtwo for example). Sonic was also nerfed, and he was a major stalling character.

A year of balance patches has done wonders for Smash 4.

Er, no. It's still using 2 stocks. The only tournament running 3 is BEAST 6, everything else is still using 2 and up to this point has been 2 in North America and Japan.

EVO 2015 main stage peak viewer counts

• Ultra Street Fighter 4 - 248,663
• Super Smash Bros. Melee - 211,393
• Mortal Kombat X - 190,535
• Ultimate Marvel versus Capcom 3 - 177,057
• Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- - 131,337

I am surprised Marvel is at number 4. I would have thought it would always be top 2.

i think i remember there being a looong transition with nothing going on in the stream in the time b/w smash and mahvel. lots of people dropped out.

in fact, thats one of the main issues that evo seems to not have gotten hang of, transitions between games. a lot of viewers lost during.

SFV
UMvC3
MKX
Xrd Revelator
Melee
Smash 4
Tekken 7
Maybe KI
Maybe USF4

No way either Smash game gets dropped. The competitive popularity for both is too insane.

Sunday:
XRD
MKX
Melee
SFV

Saturday:
USFIV
Wii U
KI
Rising Thunder Exhibition

Punish Tekken 7 for not being out on consoles yet.

Too bad characters like Zelda, Samus, Jigglypuff, etc remain gutter trash.

Killer instinct and MKX better be in.

I don't care about the rest.

I love to see peoples opinions! Keep 'em coming!

If anything,

I would like to see USF4 going out with a blast by hosting one more tournament. It would be good opportunity for us to says our farewell to USF4. I'm not really a huge fan of SF4-USF4 gameplay but I can't deny that it's always fun to watch competitive matches.

Also both Smash, UMVC3, SFV, Killer Instinct, Tekken (maybe), and Anime fighting games (Blazblue, Persona 4 Arena or Guilty Gear Xrd)

Killer Instinct should be a Sunday Final instead of MKX

no one wants to watch MKX on Sunday

I love to see peoples opinions! Keep 'em coming!

pls no Mahvel, my heart can't take another Kaneblueriver screwjo--err, classic

no big bodies, no ZMC, no Vergildoom

no Mahvel

Biggest Anime game in the morning (GG:xrd)

Saturday - Big names of last season

SF4 headlining
Mahvel
Melee
KI
Rising Thunder exhibition

Also what are the plans for the transition between games? a LOT of dead air happens every year. = lost viewers

Actually though at Irish fgc events we run puyo puyo x tetris.

Mad hype.

Time to move then.

Early EVO used to have more combo exhibitions, that would be great to just put on a few 1-2 minute videos in between long streams of dead time. They could also do what Valve did for TI and take / make footage from the previous days / tournaments and add it to the mix.

  • SFV
  • UMvC3
  • KI
  • MKX
  • Melee
  • Sm4sh
  • Xrd

Tekken can be outside lineup until gets a proper console release, exhibitions or casuals stations instead of a tournament could be better, last year I couldn't test T7

Pokken tournament can be another one to add the Namco flavor to the tournaments

Saturday
Persona
Marvel
Melee
SF4

Sunday
GGXrd
KI
MKX
Smash4
SFV

I think this year EVO tries to spread the games out over the weekend instead of going for an all Sunday finals.

Tekken 7 gets a mad cats stream and gets console release date. NRS shows a trailer for Injusitce 2. Capcom shows DLC character available that week and teases season 2.

My guesses are...
  • Street Fighter V
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Killer Instinct
  • Tekken 7

Literally cannot see anything different happening.

SFV- derpderpderp easy mode pick for reasons that don't need elaborate explanation
USFIV - The final tour for a game played a ton over the last near-decade with the strongest international scene of all the games usually present at EVO.
UMVC3 - It's Mahvel. The game will have a place here until a sequel just due to its pedigree at EVO tournaments.
Sm4sh - Extremely popular and continues to grow; great in community competition starting to develop.
Melee - At this point, like it or not, this game is inseparable from the main EVO lineup. Brings in the second most views of all games at the tournament, has the history, has the most dedicated fan base, has a number of storied rivalries that all get the "need that EVO win" spectacle bump, etc.
GGXrd -Rev- - Xrd had a breakout opening last EVO and with one of the most LEGENDARY and high profile "ayy lmao" fuck ups bringing it even more exposure, it'd be quite shortsighted not to have it present at EVO this year. Beyond silly things like this, the game is quite fun and Revelator looks to bring in a whole lot more content and mechanics to make things even crazier.
Mortal Kombat X - Strong entry in the series with a dedicated fanbase.
Killer Instinct - Haven't really been following this much but its still quite popular.
Tekken 7 - The best guess at what fills the 3D fighter notch.

I'm in for USFIV going away party, SFV tournament debut, and of course UMvC3.

Hope KI (whatever season theyre on now) and MK s2 make it as well. I'll watch those and Xrd (Revelator)

they NEED to have analysis for the upcoming top 8. there should NEVER be dead air at Evo where we just see a spinning Evo logo.

I know it's not easy but figure it out guys.

Don't be too hasty to get rid of Ultra. Street Fighter, even in this age, is a franchise that can sustain people playing and showing up for multiple versions I.E. HD Remix/Super IV being in the same year in 2010.

Likewise, Melee could use one more good year. It is the 15th Anniversary of Melee this year. So naturally, this game could use a sendoff. And if Street Fighter IV has to be sacrificed in the near future, so too must Melee. Even if a game has a strong population at EVO, if there is a new iteration of a franchise, that should be given priority to keep said franchise healthy, regardless of whether or not it's a mainstay at EVO I.E. when MvC2 was shot dead the day that MvC3 was released.

during transitions they should have pre-made videos with things like teaching people the meaning of links or how to piano on a stick or game specific info if getting people live is too hard or cumbersome. insightful, helpful, educational and casual/experienced player friendly.

and i don't mean text. i mean actual people.

I want the Smash games bumped to a sister tournament. The matches take too long and are boring as shit to me personaly.

There is more jumping around than actual fighting.

Smash doesnt need to be at Evo. Its big enough now that It could do its own Nintendo themed tournament along with pokken at the same time.

In fact, I think the whole thing could benefit from sectioning off different styles of fighter.

Western = KI/MKX
Anime = BB/GG/Marvel
StreetFighter = SS2T/USF4/SF3TS
Finals day can literally Losers and Winners and nothing else.

I dont thing Tekken has any business being on the main stage until it releases on console. Its a waste of time because only a few have had serious time with the arcade outside japan.

Its given a slot as a courtesy that it honestly doesnt deserve.

Nah, Smash should be promoted to main event! So I can turn it off after SF V, go to sleep early and not miss anything I care about.

Y'all bitching about how Melee should be cut because there's a new game should remember that there was 2 years that EVO cut Street Fighter 3 because everyone liked SF2 better, and that, even after they accepted SF3, SF2 was still a featured game alongside it and even SFIV for a few years.
