Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

SF5 and SF4? I can understand the two flavours of smash cos Smash is serious business but i'd have thought people would jump ship to SF5.

Nah, SF games gradually bleed out, but every one of them still retains a decent sized fanbase.

Except SF1 of course. and SFxT.

How many people would you expect to participate in a Pokken tournament for "a dozen" Wii Us to be feasible?
Lemme see if i can count it on my fingers... um, six?

Bear in mind I'm not talking a proper tourney here, just an exhibition of sorts, with pre-selected players. Actually, for that setup, you'd probably only need two Wii Us anyway, so there's that. :p

And you honestly think they won't bring at least a dozen for Smash 4 alone.

Oh deary me.
At least with Smash 4 you only need 1 set-up. Of course, if Nintendo/Bandai Namco/The Pokémon Company foots the bill, this won't be an issue. But that's an if.

Na. If it's there, a ton of people will enter, since at that point it's just incrementally slightly more money for the contestant and they know the game, so why not?

Because V is the new Pro Tour game with the big prize pool and playing two games is stressful. I could see some like Tokido playing both, but not Daigo. Not saying it would be a wasteland, just that some of the pros probably won't play both.

My guesses are...
  • Street Fighter V
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Killer Instinct
  • Tekken 7

Pretty sensible. I think they'll probably give USF4 a final sendoff (especially with there being no arcade release for SFV in Japan, at least at launch) and I think Marvel will make it another year but it's fate for next year is in doubt. I could maaaaaybe see them dropping Tekken depending on what venue they got this year; there's still no home release for that by the time Evo hits, and by a lot of accounts last year was a logisitical nightmare with the number of games they were running along with player space etc (see the main ballroom selling out etc) so unless they got a bigger venue I can see them not wanting to run 9 games.

Everything else is a lock/moneyhats. Pokken doesn't seem to be making enough waves to make it, especially with the logistics of needing to do the whole LAN thing to get 2-player up and running at 60 FPS w/2 Gamepads, and offhand I can't think of anything else out before Evo. Is KoF supposed to be out soonish?

Online multi only, I'd wager, considering the game and camera systems. EDIT: Explained above, though I didn't know you could play by LAN on Wii U. That's some late 90s shit going there. :P

Still, if you honestly think Nintendo is too cheap to stump up two WiiUs to bring Pokken Tournament to EVO, never mind the dozen they'll probably bring, and miss out on the biggest opportunity to sell the game to a larger and more ardent potential fanbase, well, sir, i don't know what to tell you.

This is more of a logistical issue for Evo than anything; they've said before they have to book Vegas venues several years in advance, yet every year it's blowing up faster and faster. Already tons of complaints last year about ballrooms selling out, cramped spacing etc. Unless they got a bigger venue for this year I don't it happening if for no other reason than it just being a nightmare logistically, or if Nintendo pays for it to be run in a separate ballroom or something like that maybe.

I've got nothing at all against Melee, but having to have dedicated TVs and systems just for that one game versus everything else at an event of this size is a nightmare from everything I've heard, I doubt they want to add to that even further (again unless they got a much bigger venue this year).

Rising Thunder is still in alpha
Wrong game.

There's Local LAN. But again, you need 2 Wii Us.

If Nintendo is a sponsor again I don't think that would be a problem. Getting the hardware should be easy enough. It's not like they need to look for a bunch CRT TVs or anything like that and move those things. Nintendo is going to want to promote Pokken and Evo is a good place to do it if it's picked.

Pokkén Tournament uses Local LAN for multiplayer in order to run multiplayer at 60fps. Doing multiplayer on one Wii U requires the GamePad & cuts the framerate in half.

Wow. Whoever thought that was a good idea must not understand the market.

What tournament ready players would be there for Pokken? It's a brand new IP with unique game systems that has only been out in Japanese arcade and will only be available in NA in March.

It's also like Smash is super weird compared to the other fighting games at Evo.

The is no high/low blocking and it has an arena style behind the back camera that switches into a more traditional one. You need to see first if any actual competitive scene begins first before adding it.

I highly doubt USF4 will be back. If it does, it'll be a Saturday classic or 2v2 teams. Personally I'd like to see it come back one more year but I totally understand if it doesn't.

What I think it'll be:

SFV
MKX
KI
GG XRD Revelator
Melee/Sm4sh - I think he'll probably go with both, especially since they bring in such huge numbers.
Marvel 3
Tekken 7 - If MarkMan can make it happen or Harada releases it in time?

Splitting up Melee/Sm4sh would be difficult since the communities for both games are so separate. If I had to choose one I'd go with Sm4sh since it's newer, even if I know Melee is a better game. I wonder if he'll go full 'Out with the old in with the new' or keep around SF4 and Melee.

10 more years of healing pls

If it's USFIV then I doubt many would enter, when the big money is at V.

Ryan Hart said that he spoke with a few Japanese players and they said that they'd travel to Evo again for SF4 but not for 5. If USF4 is at Evo, I think we'll get to see mostly high level play with most of the players moving to SF5.

I would say Blazblue Central Fiction but, I don't think enough entrants would warrant bringing those cabs in there alone with the Tekken 7 ones.

(Do they still use T7 cabs for newer builds of the game?)

I doubt Pokken will make it simply because it needs to have a more established player base and community. It plays differently than the traditional fighting games. Maybe a promotion or just a side thing for players there to try out is more possible.

Wow. Whoever thought that was a good idea must not understand the market.

It's not because of the market. It's because of how the camera moves in the game.

I'm guessing this.

  • SFV
  • USFIV
  • Smash Melee
  • Smash 4
  • MKX
  • GG Xrd Revelator
  • Killer Instinct
  • BlazBlue Central Fiction

I honestly think they'll drop Marvel this year but I'm not sure on how many entrants they had last year and obviously it's still pretty sizeable in the US. Don't see Tekken being here and not confident at all that BB will be there but think it's more likely than the alternatives.

No, I know. I just saying that they shouldn't have gone that route considering how cumbersome it is to run the game optimally.

If Smash 4 is in, I'm going this year!

My predictions:

Ultra Street Fighter IV
Street Fighter V
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Super Smash Bros Melee
Super Smash Bros for Wii U
Tekken 7
Mortal Kombat XL
Killer Instinct
Guilty Gear/BlazBlue/Persona 4 Arena

Honestly there's too many new games every year, this year especially, to give the limited spots to old games. They need to ditch Melee (which is a huge hassle anyways due to the CRTs and Gamecubes) and SFIV. Just stick to Smash 4 and Street Fighter V. Then there is more space to have stuff like both Guilty Gear and BlazBlue or something weird like Pokken.

Because if you have 2 Smash and 2 SF then that's already basically half the spots. And we know Tekken, Marvel, KOF, and MK are going to take 4 more.

I'm going to laugh if Ryu and Pikachu are in 3 games this time. I'll laugh even harder if Pikachu somehow ends up in more games than Ryu. I don't expect Pokken to make it, but it would be amazing.

The CRTs aren't really a hassle anymore with the Smash Vault.

Melee brings in more viewers than any game they could possibly replace it with.

King of Fighters was absent last year and I think at this point people are going to wait it out for XIV which doesn't have a release date yet. Don't think we'll be seeing it this year. I think Tekken will be contingent on when that game comes out as well cause lugging arcade cabinets for the main stage is going to be a hard sell.

Last year Marvel had over 800 entrants according to SRK, so it was less than SF, both Smash games, MK, and GG, but it still beat Tekken, Persona, and KI by a huge amount. Plus it always gets high viewers so I could see it staying.

I'm not confident in BB either, but between BB, the immediate alternatives, or one less game I think they'll take one less game.

Also, Melee had over 1.8k entrants last year, so replacing it doesn't seem smart to me.

Even if Pokken doesn't make it in as a main tournament, there is absolutely no way it will have no presence.

If Nintendo could ger their own section and bring 8 Splatoon stations to do their own thing with last year why wouldn't they be able to do the same or more with Pokken

  • Street Fighter V

  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-

  • Killer Instinct
  • Tekken 7

Looks very reasonable. I could see them drop SFIV and Marvel. I wish they would drop those and Melee.
