Can they not play multiplayer or something?

If you can play with friends/other reviewers/randos you dont know...isnt that the MP experience?

I do agree that reviewers should play the helllll out of the MP before going to print though

But like Halo Master Chief... all that stuff worked great up until they launched the thing. And then it all fell apart.

For an online game, releasing review scores before the live launch is a bit presumptive.

Surprised at relatively low scores given developer pedigree and how much time they had with the delay.

I always liked the concept but the pricing put me off not the gameplay. Would buy on steam sale but for cheap and all DLC.

It's more do with load on the servers once the game is out in the wild.

The gulf between the reviewers and their readers continues to grow.

You're comparing opinions of people who have actually played the final game (reviewers) to opinions of people who have played the alpha/beta or have only watched footage (readers). That doesn't seem very fair when trying to make your point.

These multi-player focused games, for the most part, have a very short shelf-life, and after a couple months, their communities are zilch, as most have moved on to something else, especially on the console side. Evolve will be no different.

Left4Dead and Left4Dead2 were both great games so I'm not surprised the latest asymmetrical multiplayer experience from Turtle Rock is also great. But fuck them and fuck their publisher for that ridiculous DLC. I'm not buying out of principal #smuggamer

But for real tho with so much other content vying for my attention it's easy to ignore this game.

I would argue that you are a sucker for purchasing DLC either way. I can count on one hand the amount of compelling DLC content that has come out in the last decade.

I'm not sure if you're talking about me personally, but I do have a really low threshold for what I consider compelling DLC, or even just DLC that's worth having. I don't usually have a problem playing ball with publishers and purchasing DLC if I think I'm going to get some use out of it, like maps in multiplayer or what have you; if that makes me a "sucker", well that's fine by me.

However, $60 (+$15 if you didn't preorder) for DLC that isn't even worth half that is ridiculous. It's content that should either have been in the full game or shouldn't be marketed at so high a price. But even if the content is not equivalent to the cost, the amount of money is still ridiculous. There are few games (none that come to mind) that have launched with such a meager amount of add-on content for such a high price.

And yeah, I know, I'm spoiling the thread. Sorry guys. I am still highly skeptical about this game, even after participating in so much pre-release gameplay. I'll at least wait a awhile before jumping on it, since as many have noted it will likely not have much longevity.

I agreed with you, conceded the price point just prior to where you quoted me.

At least they are going about it the right way and not segregating the community. Everyone can still play together, even with those playing the DLC content.

7 and 8s are good... 5 or 6s are average scores. People are spoiled now a days if a game is a 7 or 8 nope not worth full price.

I agree that it is the way it should be:

1-2: miserable failure, broken.
3-4: Bad game all around with few redeeming qualities
5-6: Average, might appeal to some.
7-8: Good game, most people will really enjoy it. Possible GotY contender in an average year.
9: Excellent, a classic. Definite GOTY contender.
10: GoaT contender

But the unfortunate reality it seems this past few years has been:

1-4: Miserable experience, a complete failure, utterly broken game and just awfull. Should be erased from existence.
5-6: Terrible game.
7: Bad, but some might find a few aspects appealing
8: Average, not good but not horrible either.
9: Good game, with some excellent parts.
10: Excellent game all around, possible Goty.

It's pretty much a 7 to 10 scale, 7 tending to be "bad", and 10 excellent, with 8 and 9's being expected for AAA these days.

halo master cheif....its like having vietnam flashbacks.

Just like the Destiny beta, the Evolve beta is likely a fair approximation of what the final game is going to be like, minus a few bugs and glitches. I doubt there's any content we haven't seen yet that's going to alter most people's opinions that much, given that we're spending most of our time doing in the final game what we did in the beta.

I would actually say that the Evolve beta is a much closer representation of the actual game, especially if you played the Xbone version which had extraction unlocked.

In the Destiny beta you could always go "oh no,the singleplayer will be so much bigger it'll be all different and the story will be great and this will be awesome just you see" cause the game was hiding it's content.
With Evolve the game is LITERALLY what it shows you. It's a multiplayer 4vs1 game.
Whether you see 1 map or all maps, the game is the game. Whether you see 1 monster or all monsters, the game is the game.

I feel in that regard, if you saw the alpha/beta or played it, that is exactly what you get.
There may be balance changes or some optimization or whatever, but the essence of the game has been seen and tested, so I don't quite get why a game like this needs reviews.
No reviewer is suddenly gonna come out and go "OH BTW THIS GAME HAS A 20 HOUR CAMPAIGN THAT IS SOOOOOOOO AMAZING" because, you know, it can't.

Well that just means they don't enjoy it then.
Games like this are either a hit or a miss for you.

Yep, either it will have a smaller but dedicated fan base, or it will fizzle altogether after a couple of months/a year. I don't see this hitting big numbers with broad appeal. Hopefully I'm wrong though!

Loved Left 4 Dead, but this doesn't really look like it will click for me. I will likely try it at some point, but I'm not expecting much.

For an online game, releasing review scores before the live launch is a bit presumptive.

Most (if not all) reviewers could not play the game online because the servers weren't working yet. I think we can all see why they weren't.

The offline mode works well (mostly).

So torn on this. Liked the beta, didn't love it, but I also didn't have a lot of time to put into it. Tempted to pre-order from Best Buy since I'd get 20% off plus $10 in rewards. Probably should decide here soon, and not sure if I'd go XB1 or PS4.

Reviewers are actually required to play the game, though. I wouldn't be surprised if many of the complaints are from people who put the game down after one round. Not that those people are wrong for disliking a game after a first impression (I do it all the time), but that could explain the gulf as well.

Every person in the press release has been playing with other people.
I have literally been watching other people play with other real players for the last few hours.

All you really need is dota. Game is free and gates zero game content away from the player.

I was answering to a post that was talking about the MCC, and I was talking about MCC. It was a diferent case than Evolve.

Meh, I played L4D2 on the 360 for damn near two years, almost nightly. This will be just fine.

Welp, just said fook it and ordered it from BestBuy.

I rather disliked it when the Beta first started, but by the time it ended, I was enjoying it IMMENSELY. Playing as the Goliath in particular almost always legitimately got my adrenaline pumping, especially at the end as Lv.3 and having to ffinally face off with the other players.

no, they couldn't play multiplayer for the reviews as it wasn't active until launch day - was clearly stated in all the reviews.

have the reviewers this time been able to play online with other press / special players?

Press release copies of the game have been playing and streaming ever since the last beta ended

I would be ecstatic if it found a dedicated, but niche Lost Planet kind of community :)

What would it take to see this become an industry standard?

I wish more would think like you with this scale. I think you perfectly described what the scale should be roughly.
