Facebook Confirms ‘Dislike’ Button Is in Development

I think instead of a constant dislike button, like YouTube, it would read the post and determine if a dislike button is needed instead. If that is the case, then yes it does take some work to ensure they get it right. So easy to be snarky over little things they want to change.

I can't imagine it being named "dislike", but I can imagine something like a "sympathy" button for stuff like "my dog died", "I got stung by a bee", "I pooped myself when shopping" etc.

I find the phrasing for the button to be "in development" so funny and absurd, like the coding probably doesn't take too long and may even be done with just one person

What this feature will actually be:
If you are posting that your dad or dog died, it's a thumbs down instead of a thumbs up so that people too lazy to say "Sorry to hear" can click the button without worrying that it will look like they're glad you've suffered a loss.

What this feature will actually be:

Conservatives disliking Obama post.
Conservatives disliking pro-gay posts.

etc..

I'd imagine the difficulty isn't in coding the feature itself, but rather deciding how and why to implement it.

Take cyberbulling, for example. It's a real problem on Facebook, especially for teenagers. Giving people a "dislike" button could have serious implications.

Fuck it's bout time

I can finally be really passive aggressive on Facebook now

You can be plenty passive aggressive on facebook as it is

Beth: Oh no that test was so hard I am sure I bombed it
4 likes (you like this).

Internally you're all like "Hehehehe I hope you fucking bombed it Beth, you're a real big meanie and I hope you get smoked!!!"

Yep, it's like this. There won't be a literal "Dislike" link. It'll be an image or option related to Like for those moments you want to acknowledge a post but Like seems callous or weird.

The "empathy" aspect makes sense.

Sometimes the Like button isn't fitting when a person wants to acknowledge something but isn't in support of it and doesn't want to comment.

Oh great, even more social complications introduced to Facebook. Just like people flip out when someone sees their message and doesn't reply, now they're going to become sensitive every time someone dislikes. This idea is terrible, Facebook has been diminishing in quality very consistently.

Twitch is way ahead of the game with emotes. You can concentrate so much more information into a face than you can into a hand.

Biblethump > Dislike

Maybe they'll make it so the content poster decides if the dislike button will show up?

Like if you post an awful story you can make it so the only button to appear is dislike.

Now I'd love that.

I could get behind this.

I'm not sure I get the use in this to express empathy. The "like" button is inappropriate to acknowledge somebody's personal misfortune or tragedy. But if you want to express sympathy or condolences, that's what comments are for.

If somebody you know posts about their grandmother dying, is it too much for you to write "I'm sorry for you loss" or "I'm here for you"?

I'm sorry for your loss, but not enough for me to take the time to write that out as opposed to clicking a button.

How are they going to control that?

Like if someone is posting something sad and you want to show empathy but clicking the like button makes it seems like your are happy that they are sad, so in that case a dislike button would be more appropriate?

Maybe it won't say 'dislike'?

'Emphasize' would be a more fitting name for that button. The problem is half of Facebook users probably have no idea what that word even means.

It's weird how people think so little of designers. Like they haven't considered everything people have said in here.

They made a site almost everyone uses daily, and they wouldn't be good enough to design this to avoid the problems y'all describe?

I absolutely super love Facebook and I'm totally down for almost anything they do, but I'm very unhappy about this news.

As some people have mentioned, what makes Facebook work for yours truly is how it's designed to encourage positivity among friends. Even a "damn that sucks" approach for the "my dog is dead" situation is generally expressed by multiple friends expressing their sympathy in the comments.

I host a lot of very positive discussions on both media and politics that are accepting of people of all beliefs and the thought of someone being able to make it more intimidating for others to share delicate opinions bothers me.

I hope that it won't be too bad and I wonder if it'll be tested through FB's usual AB testing. I love Facebook with every facet of my being and I hope that that love can remain as strong as it is for years to come.

I was gonna say, if you want to hit dislike, you have to leave a reason why.

But then I remembered you could just type random garbage and that would just make it worse.

So this is how Facebook ends...

Somebody as smart as Zuckerberg should realize that the Internet is definitely not going to use the button the way they intend it and it'll drastically escalate cyber bullying.
