Facebook Confirms ‘Dislike’ Button Is in Development

So this is how Facebook ends...

Somebody as smart as Zuckerberg should realize that the Internet is definitely not going to use the button the way they intend it and it'll drastically escalate cyber bullying.
As many said, it will be more like a sorry button.

My dog died "Hit sorry"

If it was a dislike... expect riots in the streets and I'm not kidding. The amount of friendships that would break.

I think I'd rather someone write a comment if they want to express empathy. I'm getting a lot more cynical about the whole idea of "Likes" (and the other social network equivalent features where you express approval with a bare minimum of effort).
Yeah, comments are better. I had to post some really terrible news on Facebook earlier this year and the comments were helpful. Couldn't give a shit about the likes, like you said, bare minimum effort. Would be the same no matter what the button said.

The "empathy" excuse is hilarious. There's just no way to tell whether it's empathy or passive aggression when 1) People already use the Like button to show empathy and 2) When you only have two ways to show emotion.

It's like Hearthstone emotes.

Lol exactly.

This won't end well.

FB needs a sympathize button before a dislike button. I don't like that your grandpa died, but I can sympathize.

This is the answer that I hope they go with.

I also expect that the user will be able to remove other peoples' dislikes, much like you can remove tags of yourself in pictures.

If it really is just a straight-up "Dislike" button, then I am immediately unfriending anyone who Dislikes my post just to be mean

It's right there in the article, this exactly what they are doing.

The “dislike” button will not be for upvoting or downvoting comments and posts.

Good luck with that. Should be about as successful as reddit trying to get people to follow their concept of what a downvote button is for.

I can already see both: a) angsty teenagers down-voting all their own posts to make an "statement", b) used as a substitute for every selfie that comes with "I look ugly".

Zuckerberg was also clear that the button won’t be designed to express negative thoughts, but rather “expressing empathy.” The “dislike” button will not be for upvoting or downvoting comments and posts.
Definitely not going to happen.

As ridiculous as it sounds, if Facebook ever introduced an actual straight-forward 'dislike' button it would probably be one of the more significant moments in cultural history.

Still, that's what the company intends for it, but not necessarily how folks will use it. There could wind up being a vast sea of photos of people's lunches with a thumbs down. The worst part is that some people would genuinely be doing so because they did feel sorry for any poor schmucks who just ate rhubarb pie.

No matter what the intention is, if it's juxtaposed against the like button, people will usurp the definition.

Lol at people thinking that just because it's taking a while it means it will be implemented well. Look at he travesty that is graph search.

You can try and label it an "empathy" button but that's not how the internet works facebook. This should be interesting to see how it effects what people post now that giving dislike is as easy as giving like.

This is like, exactly what they said they are doing...
With something so vague, they aren't going to be able to control how people use it. The same way I'm sure the designers didn't expect people to like posts like "My dog died today." They want people to use it for a specific reason, but people will just end up using it for anything negative. Hitting a button that's a thumbs down could mean such a range of things that there is no way they could limit it to one specific negative emotion.

Even if they go so far as to call it an "Empathy Button" that doesn't mean people won't misuse it the same way they've been misusing the "Like" button.

Yup. It will probably be abused as an avenue for negativity and will cause problems.

This feature was unnecessary.

There should be a 'shut your face' button that when pressed plays the recipient an audio clip of said phrase in a southern english accent.

Zuckerburg has never been to youtube I guess...

Making a "real" dislike button would totally go against one of the basic operation principle of facebook. Facebook works (in part) because the basic tools create a positive atmosphere. If you want to express that you really dont like something you have write a comment. The easiest way to express yourself (to like something) only goes in one direction, and thats a positive one.

Sounds like this is more about addressing the issue of when someone shares bad news, like a parent dying, and clicking "thumbs up" would be awkward.

Now I'd love that.

and boom, Facebook is relevant again
inside my tiny bubble of awareness

I imagine this will be opt-in, or even something you have to enable per post.

Like, I go to post a status about how my grandparent just died, "Enable dislike button?"

Yep. Pretty sure they'll let you toggle between a like and dislike button.

That's exactly how I think it will work. You don't need an empathy button for happy posts like birthdays and graduations.

'Whoops!'

If you want it to be a sorry button, make an appropriate icon for it. People will always interprete a thumbs down as "LOL FUCK YOU"

The problem is not needing a "dislike" to click on, the problem is "like"

Honestly it should be renamed "acknowledge" - it can be used in both good and bad situations.
