Fallout 4 was a big disappointment

I had a strange relationship with this game during the start. With Bethesda games I just want to go out and explore before committing myself to complete the main story. I loved it early on as the Commonwealth was fascinating to explore and learn more from the world. After a long 20+ hours of exploring I went back to the main story but found it dreadful. I don't care about my son and locking my character into making him care about it was a mistake. The dialogue system is just awful, I honestly don't know what they were thinking when they made it. In general I just stopped caring about the main story and wanted to learn more about a crazy ageless family or the harrowing tale of a toy maker living in a post-nuclear future. My enjoyment with the game kept getting worse the more I played it and it ended in the limpest way possible. I was baffled that it ended so meekly but bad endings in these games isn't that surprising. 7/10

horrendous game

a pathetic failure on all levels aside from serving as a 20-hour post-apocalyptic tourism sim before you realize how stupid everything is

Words like this giving some turn based fan aneurysms right now.

Hehe, I loved the original Fallout, and Wasteland, have fond memories of all those games, alongside Bards Tale etc, but this, theese games are something else, but in a good way, atleast for me... :)

I have tried Wasteland 2, but it's not for me.. :(

I think it depends on where your expectations were. I can't imagine why anyone would have unrealistically high expectations that it would be much better than 3. Sorta set yourself up for disappointment.

In the end it was a solid game but we got what was already overtly clear from the get-go: more of the same. Diminishing returns are a real thing and apply to games like this. It does too little to differentiate itself from previous entries and in fact seems content with giving us less of it. My main issues are a lack of diverse quests (I don't even remember most of them, whereas Fallout 3 and Oblivion have much more personality to their quests). Also the completely dumbed down dialogue system hurts the game more than it should. Whoever made that decision should be fired on the spot. Overall the game remains its fun factor and the world is fun to explore so I do thik it's a worthy entry, but it really didn't need to be named "4". That implies a real sequel where things are different, improved and new things are introducd. This is not that game.

The gunplay is much better than 3. Since you spend the vast majority of your time in Bethesda's Fallout games shooting at stuff, I think that makes Fallout 4 a much better game than 3. I see the improvements in first-person shooting as two steps forward and the dumbing down of the roleplaying as one step backward. Others will see it differently, of course, I can imagine many would see it as one step forward and twenty steps back.

Back when Fallout 3 was coming out, Bethesda had me thinking they still made RPGs, but 3 put my expectations for 4 firmly in check. If Bethesda wants to make Fallout an FPS, the very least they could do was make it a competent one and they did that with 4.

The endings go full Call of Duty and show that Bethesda was far more focused on creating framerate-destroying setpieces than coherent narrative endings.

They are pretty cool setpieces, but it just goes along with the whole "Theme Park Ride" thing that people label the Bethesda Fallouts as.

Yeah because the OT will surely agree on his points right? Its a discussion board, if you dont like the topic dont click on the thread matey.

Op makes very good points youd have to be a blind defender to go against it.

Also just because the game is enjoyable, doesnt mean it cant also dissapoint. Not sure why ppl dont understand that

I have no qualms with their opinion of the game, just don't see these reaction threads as promoting good discussion, keep it in the OT. Does everyone need to post a thread for their opinion of F4?

It's definitely a huge step back. There are far better shooters on the market than fallout. In my opinion the series should play to its strengths. I didn't wait This long to play yet another open world game with sub par shooting. I get that people enjoy it though. It's definitely nice that they improved it from previous fallouts but like I said there are plenty of games on the market where I can run around shooting people in the face.

I've put a decent amount of time in it, and I enjoyed most of it. But it's my biggest disappointment of 2015.
Lack of role playing.
Lack of armour variety (all the Legg and arm pieces look the same, they have what 3 or 4 different looks?)
Gun upgrade system makes finding new guns useless, your better of upgrading your existing guys.
People in the world not acknowledging the things you've done, I helped some dumb farm 5 times clearing out ghouls and every time I speak to them they act like we've just met.
There were a couple of interesting quests, but most of the were boring as hell.
The fucking loading screens, give me a fucking option to let me into the building I'm fast traveling too, don't make me sit through 2 fucking long as loading screens, why o why after all this fucking years is this still a thing?

I do think Fallout 4 is a much better game than 3. F4 improves upon a lot of things that weren't great in F3, such as the gunplay you mentioned. It's still a blast to play but again, if you expected something like New Vegas or 2 from a developer that doesn't make things like that, I dont know what to tell you.

I had super low expectations for the game since the first trailer and it pretty much matched them 1:1: super shallow dialog system and rather low amounts of gameplay variety in general. If the dialog trees were actually decent the constant (good-to-great) shooting parts would be more bearable but they are just... horrible.

Last night when I was playing I saw
Z2-47
and I exhausted all the (bad) dialog options only to find out that all of them end to the same end result:
Z2-47 saying that it's time to die and then it's pew pew pew again.
. Then I went to the
Railroad
and embraced the godawful
technical mumbo jumbo by Tinker Tom when he was "hacking" some chip. Beware Tinker Tom that you don't spoil the graphics on level 4.
. Even the awesome "show actual dialog options" mod cannot save most of them.

Then I went on to find out that the "hey workshop is totally optional"
is a dirty lie. So I spend building something for 30 minutes just for the sole reason of using the workbench, most of which was trying to gather ceramic that I suddenly had none of.
. Majority of other quests have been pretty bad too, or just ruined by technical issues.

It's a weird game. I am having tons of fun with it at times. Most of the times even. The graphics aren't the best everywhere, but it has some jawdropping moments and the art style is really solid all around and stylistically it's just really, really well designed. The voice acting is ranges from bad to good but sound design is otherwise solid. The shooting kinda works. Technically the game is mostly a generation behind but I can forgive that (after installing the game to a SSD to prevent 2 minute load times).

It's just that the gameplay in Fallout 4 is incredibly shallow.

It's an average Bethesda game, and will probably fall from cultural awareness rapidly while Skyrim still sticks around.

They didn't change enough, and too many of the changes they did make are either for the worse (dialogue system) or superfluous and half baked (base building)

I'm very surprised to see people here like new Vegas. I thought that game was horrible when compared to fallout 3. I enjoy fallout 4 but it isn't better then 3. To each his own I guess

The only disappointment is insofar that it is a sequel to Fallout 3, as Oblivion and Skyrim were basically Morrowind minus some stuff.

It's more of the same.

The impression I got of fewer side quests was definitely disappointing. I'll still play it and may be surprised there, but one of the draws for Bethesda games was finding a bunch of quests to do that weren't just randomly generated "clear this area out" ones and if that's all I have to look forward to that'll be incredibly lame.

The only reason to do radiant quests is if you want to max out the Perk chart. The game has plenty of "real" side quests.

It's a better game. It's a better Fallout game. HELL, it's the only modern Fallout game that's not fanfiction.

I agree for sure about the dialog. I pumped up charisma because of all the options it led to in the other games and wow was I disappointed. They need to revert

This was one of my bigger issues with the game. I had zero interest in settlements or building, but was constantly running into required instances of doing so. It was actually what finally tipped me to putting the game away.

I really have to agree about the dialogue system. It's just terrible.

What a disgrace compared to NV.

I was glad they added little "mmhms" from the player character when you skip dialogue, because I skipped like fucking all the dialogue and it was hilarious. The player even gives a different sarcastic dismissal depending which button you use to skip.

Damn GAF threads went from "FO4 is a perfect game" to this thread.

Guess the homeymoon phase must be over.

Separate people, separate opinions.

But for me, it wasn't until a few hours in that I started getting iffy about the quests being shorter and shit.

Then, after like ten hours, I was like "I'm not having fun with this at all".

I hit the
Institute
and could not deal with how absolutely boring it was.

I put 60 hours into the game and was like *shrug*. Compare that to 200 hours in New Vegas and I'm still wanting to go back and do some of the DLC I missed. The writing just pulls me along in that one. In this one I really like the world Bethesda has made, and it's what they are good at. But the story just didn't do anything for me. I don't care about kids or want any so why the fuck should I care about that.

I hate how they forced you into this character. Skyrim was way better at giving you a blank slate to work with.

I've been playing The Witcher 3 quite a lot over the past few weeks and am absolutely in love with it. I bought Fallout 4 at launch but have to try it out. I'm honestly scared to. Yeah, I know they're very different games but The Witcher 3 has really raised the bar for open-world experiences in my view.
Wasn't it you that initially hated The Witcher 3? If so, I'm curious as to what changed your view.

The the voiced player character is just the worst. The hell were they thinking. Their terrible dialogue + voiced character? fucking yuck.

I hope they keep this shit far away from Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5.

Though, I have no doubt that Obsidian could make an interesting voiced MC for NV2. I'd still prefer to keep the voiced MC shit out of these games.

Fallout 4 didn't disappoint me. Yes, the game is streamlined to fuck, the quests are pretty much 'go here, shoot that', the dialogue system sucks and giving your character a voice and backstory is shitty. But I love the series for its world building and with that Bethesda fucking delivered and that makes it up for me.

It has a few fun moments like when you first go to "The Glowing Sea" or "The Museum of Witchcraft", but at a certain point anger was what I felt the most. I just found myself frustrated with the litany of poor design choices when playing it.

I really tried to like this game as a non-RPG, but even setting aside all expectations aside, I just don't think Fallout 4 is good in any area apart from exploration and maybe base-building, but I don't care about that aspect at all.

I think the most damning thing about Fallout 4 is that I played it for nearly 40 hours and explored basically the entire map and it's still a struggle to point out more than a handful of memorable moments.

The world design isn't very interesting. The quest variety is awful as are the way they play out since Bethesda has basically removed any modicum of player choice and everything devolves into go here and kill super mutants, raiders or mirelurks. Sure, the gunplay is better than 3/New Vegas, but it's still fairly mediocre/average and juxtaposed with a clunky movement system.

If I had to describe, Fallout 4 in one word "soulless" would be pretty apt. It's a very shallow and unrewarding experience even in some of the things that people are applauding like the loot system.

I haven't even touched on the terrible dialogue system, poor writing, handicapped perk system, bugginess and other personal quibbles like the jarring real-time conversations, less sense of progression in comparison to 3/NV and the soundtrack not being anywhere near its full potential.

I'd also like to point out the bad voice acting(there are a few exceptions), which admittedly wouldn't be a huge deal for me if it weren't for the fact that it probably played a big part in why the dialogue system is so restrictive.

I was enjoying myself when I started it but by the time I got to the big plot twist in the main story I was getting soured on the game overall.
Having your son being the old ass man running the Institute was just plain stupid, even for a Bethesda rpg where I'm not expecting a whole hell of a lot in the story department.
One little thing that would have been cool is if we had Silver Shroud dialogue options when in costume throughout the game.

I agree. I really, really liked FO4 and look forward to what the modding community will be able to do with it. But once I beat it I immediately felt the urge to reinstall New Vegas, load up some mods and go into the Mojave Wasteland. The difference in quality as it applies to side-quests, world-building, atmosphere, etc. is striking. Fallout: New Vegas is the best Fallout made in Bethesda's style.

Yeah that was some lazy writing, not only it was sort of obvious that was the twist from the very beginning

Makes zero sense from a character motivation point of view, like you know Why would your
son
not help you at all?

I finish those quest as soon as I could, and I've been trying to forget about that nonsense since.

beat it around 145 hours, and started a second playthrough shortly after. obviously i enjoy it immensely. i do agree the radiant quests are half assed bullshit, and the lack of spec-based dialogue options are super disappointing. It really doesn't hold a candle to New Vegas... but it's still enough of the (Bethesda-based) Fallout that I love.

Yeah, there never was a honeymoon phase for Fallout 4.

Aside from one "Fallout 4 is perfect" thread (which was immediately torn to shreds) and the OT (which is always a Safe Space for fans), it's been nothing but negative thread after negative thread. Hell people were gunning for the game before it even launched.

It's funny 'cause people say that all high-profile games endure this level of scrutiny, but I'm not so sure I agree. The recent example is MGSV. Seems like people cooled on it QUICK. But the thing is, no one is making daily or semi-weekly threads about how disappointed they are with MGSV. Or how MGSV fails in this dept. or that dept.

Quite simply, no one is talking about MGSV. At all.

Which is why the particular heat brought on Fallout 4 is so perplexing to me. It's not enough to have a general malaise about the game, we need to be reminded almost every day about it's flaws via some new thread. Of course you get the same few posters hanging out in every one of them, repeating the same lines about why the game is so bad and an insult to the franchise, and that helps fuel the fire. But I still don't get it.

Perhaps the game is just that divisive. I don't hear many people shouting from the rooftops that MGSV is their GOTY. But you hear lots of that in every, "Fallout 4 sucks and I'm here to tell you why." thread that pops up regularly.

It's certainly one of the stranger chapters in Gaf history that I've come across. I honestly don't recall such a HATE IT/LOVE IT dichotomy in a long time. Like, we back & forth on games all the time, but I don't recall such a sustained, unending argument of a single title in a long time.

Preach it, BROTHER!

Man, I could fill a thread with New Vegas stories. It makes you feel the consequences of your choices more than any other Bethesda game (I know Bethesda didn't develop it). The Factions, exploration, weapon mods and ammo. If you haven't I highly recommend downloading Project Nevada and playing through with a new character. Harder at first, but so satisfying. I hope Obsidian gets another shot at Fallout using the new engine used in FO4. Take me back to Vegas, baby!

.

You mean MGSV that got a OT3 spoiler thread. That MGSV?

Why are you always in these threads? In every single one you're always complaining that the game is getting picked on.

It's fun for me. Put plenty hours into it. Witcher 3 changed my expectations on what a open-world rpg should deliver though. FO4 story is flat flat flat. Can only shoot so many mutants and synths and build pretty settlements before I realize I connect with absolutely nothing on an emotional level.
