on Darkstalkers return

Ayana Tsubaki: For many years now, Capcom has been making strides towards supporting and enlivening the world of fighting games. As a fighting games player myself, that's something that I'd like to express my gratitude for. Especially when you said, a number of years back, that you'd love to bring out a new installment in the Darkstalkers series... when that was reported, I was simply euphoric.

Yoshinori Ono: My apologies. We won't be releasing a new installment in the Darkstalkers series anytime soon. As we didn't manage to hit our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection... so...

Tsubaki: Eh?! *Laughs* But I'm really a fan of the series, and I'd really love for Capcom to make it happen!

Ono: Well, in that case all you have to do is buy about 4 million copies of Darkstalkers Resurrections! *Laughs*

on Street Fighter x Tekken

Tsubaki: *Laughs* Also, I'd like to see a new installment of the Street Fighter X Tekken series!

Ono: In Street Fighter X Tekken's case, if we're able to get just a little more development budget allocated to the project, I think we might release one more patch for the game. We've even got the details of what we'd change in the patch planned out.

Tsubaki: Is that so!? But in all honesty, what I'm hoping for here is a sequel to the game. After all, even with Capcom vs. SNK, it wasn't until CvS2 that it became a huge hit. Even today it's still hailed as an incredible fighting game. So I was hoping for a similar development to happen with Street Fighter X Tekken.

Ono: That's what I've always been telling the company too. But at the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salaryman can never overcome *laughs*. For instance, if a game doesn't sell over 2 million copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren't capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.

With that said, now that Bandai Namco Games has announced Tekken 7, and with Sega having no fighting game plans in their pipeline *laughs*, there needs to be somebody else around to stir up the scene with some lively competition.

Tsubaki: But Sega's been hard at work lately putting out 2D fighting games like Blade Arcus from Shining and Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, no?

Ono: But none of those games are new installments of "that" franchise! *Laughs* Well, I can't really say what I'm referring to here, but in any case you'd expect a high-impact, heavyweight title here [to stand up to a game like Tekken 7].

A troll to the bone.

And Capcom gauging interest for a new Darkstalkers via sales of ports of old games that have had tons of ports before? Smart as always I see.

How do you drop CVS2 in the conversation like that and not ask why they haven't made a sequel to one of the greatest fighting games of all time?

He's right about Sega fighters.
The rest sounds like usual Capcom bad management.
To be fair it sounds like Ono wants to do a lot of stuff fans would want but the people above him won't allow it.

I love Ono in many ways....even if I hate his guts

arghafhga I hate this.

Stop spending so much money on a game that you need to sell 4 million to make a profit.

They definitely didn't need 4 million to make a profit

they likely needed 4 million to convince his superiors there is sufficient demand to spend a significant amount of money to make a proper sequel.

4 fucking million copies
Whatever the targets actually were I can guarantee they were way too high for what that game was. I mean VS with perfect netcode is awesome for me and its competitive fanbase but the larger Darkstalker fanbase and new players were never going to bite on yet another port/rerelease in such large numbers. People want new characters and a continuation of the story with all the other fresh content that comes with that. CAPCOM are such idiots when it comes to appealing to their fanbase and leveraging their properties.

You dug your own grave with SFxT Ono. Take the L and move on.

He's right about SEGA and Virtua Fighter though. Franchise is probably headed to the mobile ghetto at this point.

Their sales expectations are always so damn ridiculous.
Would you like to see Dragons Dogma 2?

Well Im sorry, but the fans didnt support it enough.

We needed to sell 123892371290370273129 copies in order for the the higher ups to consider it.

better luck next time.

Pretty sure he is joking about 4 mil. But Resurrection being a test isn't anything new either. SF4 only happened because Hyper Fighting did well.

It doesn't make sense any way they try to spin it.

Their best selling game to date is Resident Evil 5 and that did around 6 million.

How the heck can anyone expect anywhere near 4 million for old Darkstalkers ports?

I think the deal with that was that Capcom and SNK's deal was for each of them to do three games. SNK made Card Fighters, SvC Match of the Millenium on the NeoGeo Pocket Color, and SvC Chaos on the NeoGeo, while Capcom made CvS, CvS Pro, and CvS 2. I'm not sure where the DS Card Fighters fits in with that though.

pretty sure he's not joking. I remember reading that RE6 sold nearly 7 million copies and it was still dissapointing to capcom execs.

I hope no one is taking seriously his 4 millions hyperbole... I imagine their target was too high anyway, though.

But MvC3 largely was pushed as hard as it was because the MvC 2 re-releases did great sales. Ditto with SF4 and the Super Turbo/Third Strike re-releases. Capcom should grief for a lot, but no relative interest in a 1:1 comparison to previous efforts is a pretty good indication that it's just throwing money down a well.

Edit: It's pretty obvious the 4 million number (for an XBLA/PSN game) was a joke. The actual vanilla SF4 sold just a hair over 3 million.

He laughs at the end of the sentence. They only need DS4 to have an expected 2mil units sold to be worth doing. Presumably DSR just needed to put similar numbers to Hyper Fighting.

Pretty sure they've long surpassed their decade quota for how many times they can answer the same question.

I would love to see another Darkstalkers, but not with silly 3D models, get some HD sprites, or at least like GGXrd models, oh well

Ono is subtly trying to give the interviewer some hints but the damn guy just won't shut uo,

Ono is trying to be as polite as possible about the fact that Capcom, and Sega are just not those kinds of companies anymore. He cant convince the dumbasses in upper management to make anything, and Sega obviously doesnt care about anything that isnt mobile anymore.

Infact, a majority of these japanese companies only care about mobile now, from Sega to Capcom to SE...

The Darknstalkers resurrection thing is as stupid as SE saying FF7 G Bike was what depending on FF7 getting a sequel, these japs have no sense of business at all, no wonder they are failing.

Every mention of Darkstalkers by that man is another stab at my heart.

Speaking of Sega Fighters, is AM2 all but dead? Because the last thing they put out was a rerelease of Virtua Fighter and that's it. I don't know who else at sega could touch Virtua Fighter but them.

It's been patently obvious that, for the last fifteen or so years, Capcom's executives have only looked at raw numbers and decided almost everything based on that.

You'd think they'd work differently after it failed to work, but they just get more and more conservative.

They really expected 4 million from a somewhat expensive downloadable collection of retro games older than their target audience?

I think I'm going to break this part out, so if you see another thread, don't be alarmed.

4 million copies for Darkstalkers Resurrection? is Capcom fucking insane or just completely stupid?

It's just mismanagement. It's really kind of sad seeing all the differing ways it's happened with Japanese devs last gen. From Capcom's apparent need to only cater to franchises that are multi million sellers apparently, to Square's requirement to have an uber engine and, failing that, never releasing any games...

Cam we at least get a port of USFIV on PS4, hell port SF2HDR and Third Strike too. I'm tired of putting the PS3 on just for some Street Fighter. I'm sure the sales of those easy ports could go towards part of the fund for a SFV.
