These are the japanese Switch Charts right?

Only 4 non-Switch games in the top 30 :messenger_open_mouth:

Switch monthly sales outpace Xbox One S lifetime in Japan... oof.

Lupin3

Targeting terrorists with a D-Pad
SMM2 seems disappointing to me. Or perhaps it's in line with expectations?

Love that game, but thought it would do better.

And Fire Emblem... Ouch!

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Top 10 Nintendominated!

Very impressive hardware numbers for Switch as well..

It did about as well as I expected it to.

Crafting and creation/building games are a tough sell. It takes a lot of time, creativity and imagination to make anything worthwhile in the game. A lot of people can't be bothered to make a functioning stage. Even then having your stuff liked/followed/shared/played/buzzwordoftheday by a lot of people is almost entirely luck based. Settlement building in Fallout for example was widely panned, though I spent an unfortunate amount of time in the game doing so. Minecraft was lightning in a bottle. Mario maker caters mostly to diehards like me that grew up with Nintendo and drew up our own levels on graph paper.

Not surprised Sony put much less emphasis on Japan this generation.

They didn't even release the PS4 day one in Japan. I think it was a few months later.
PS5 will probably be the same.

Just take all the stock you would have allocated to Japan, and dump it into the other territories. You could probably even wait half a year before introducing the PS5 to Japan.
I don't think the Playstation is a "Japanese" console anymore. It's a western one, like the Xbox.
And it seems that it is working out very well for them.

I don't think it's that as much as that Japan's market has changed to become almost completely handheld.

Sony abandoned Vita long before Japan did.

It’s part of it but also one thing people outside Japan might be surprised is that, from my own experience in talking to lots of people, kids particularly not only aren’t that interested in Playstation here these days, but also don’t even recognize the brand much anymore. To them gaming is all about Switch and it’s brands. Most of the people that are buying the PS4 these days are older gamers. At work when I teach kids and they hear I like games the two things that always they ask me are, do you play fortnite and do you play switch. I always say yes and playstation as well. And they look at me with an expression like I said some unknown word from some alien language. Eventually a few will go, oh yeah I know and I don’t play it.

Thankfully Sony has made itself a nice section of the market, but they lost the gigantic general game market after the PS2, and very few games (like monster hunter) just capture that market like Nintendo does with its system and games.

I wouldn't go as far to say say its a "western" console. It's been very popular across the Middle East, Africa and even in Asia outside of Japan.

As far as gaming hardware is concerned Japanese tastes have changed in the last decade and now seem to lean towards handheld platforms more than ever before.

There was only that one PS4 title hanging on in the past several months. Is this the first time in a long while that Switch games occupy the top 10?
