February 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes March 10th

[3DS] 265k
[PS4] 295k
[WIU] 75k
[XB1] 220k

Strange pattern where February tends to be a noticeable increase over January for most systems; tax returns?
I don't know if the pattern is the same in the US, but in Sweden people are broke in January because they spent all their money on Christmas shopping.

The existence of the Wii U port seems illogical otherwise.

the wii u port could have been started even before the wii u launched.

and it seems weird if nintendo was offering that level of support when nis america of all companies turned out to be localizing it.

Considering the Accuracy that Amazon Monthly Charts have shown since launch (100%), looks like PS4 should take February. Of course, Amazon is going to be wrong at some point, and the rankings are pretty close.

Amazon February 2015 Best Sellers

PS4 - 9th
XBO - 12th

For those that like that info, of course.

Amazon had a ridiculous Xbox One bundle recently. It might skewed closer than other retailers because of that.

The Last Story, a Nintendo moneyhat contracted out to Mistwalker, was published by XSEED Games in the USA.

Small companies can still publish Nintendo games in other territories. It's not unheard of.

So was the Amazon Xbox one bundle the only big deal for the console this month or did any other retailers have any good deals? Did the PS4 have any bundles at various retailers?

Note for NPD sales:

PS4 hit 20.2 million worldwide sell-through as of 2015-03-01.

PS4 hit 18.5 million worldwide sell-through as of 2015-01-04.

So that's 1.7 million PS4 consoles sold worldwide in January and February.

An interesting tidbit that may affect your PS4 estimates this month.

An update, now that we have Japan sell-through numbers:

1.7 million PS4 consoles sold worldwide between 2015-01-05 and 2015-03-01.

Ummm seems to hint at 300k PS4 sales in February at least!
But that seems to be against the yoy decline situation we have seen in January so we'll see.
Maybe a few of the deals and recent bundles really had an impact for the month.

the last story was also worked on by nintendo's european branch. it seems like the only thing they're doing with rodea is putting it in directs.

this isn't a nintendo game though. kadokawa published it and prope originally created it. nintendo published the last story in europe and japan.

Nintendo doesn't have to have published the game for there to have been a moneyhat / exclusivity deal going on.

Isn't the Wii U port the only way to sell the Wii version in some form? Considering it's backwards compatible. I mean without a Wii U version the finished Wii version gets lost to history and possible leaks.

Also of all the 3DS games to pay for a Wii U port Rodea is not something I think Nintendo would care to add to the small roster.

Well, there's that, too, but if it was just that, February would be a return to "normal" monthly rates. Instead, February is usually above "normal" monthly rates by a fair bit. Not sure if tax returns is the reason, but the bump is typically there for whatever the reason is.

I assume if Kadokawa really cared about profitability, they wouldn't have bothered with releasing the Wii U / Wii version in the first place. Like how Capcom didn't bother with a Wii U version of Monster Hunter 4.

Third-party Wii U console exclusives aren't exactly the most profitable venture at the moment.

Nintendo makes odd decisions. Fatal Frame V funding. Hotel Dusk funding. Devil's Third funding. Bayonetta 2 funding. Zangeki no Reginleiv funding. Disaster: Day of Crisis funding. Pandora's Tower funding. The Last Story funding. Endless Ocean funding.

They can be quirky and illogical at times, and Rodea the Sky Soldier (which seems like another one of Nintendo's passion projects) sounds perfect for a random moneyhat.

Iwata is a developer at heart. He loves this kind of stuff.

Type-0 is in the top 20 of Amazon best sellers for a few days now. Hope this means we'll see it in the NPD top 10 for March.

Timeline wise, this puts their pre order interest (relative, as we do not know for sure in what volume anything is being bought on that list without some base numbers) above Evolve and about the same as the Order in their respective 10 days up to launch. Can any of our retail heroes give us insight into if this is true elsewhere, or is just happening on Amazon? Also, the split seems to REALLY favor the PS4 version, but given the franchise history, I guess that is a given...

Shouldn't be too hard. I think it takes like 70-80K to enter the charts during this period of the year. Anything that's not down right bomba or very niche should be able to chart.

I'm going to go ahead and predict that Evolve is a relative bomb:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/2015-02/videogames#5

This can't be good, not given the constant barrage of commercials and press I've been seeing.

It's becoming pretty apparent why many games put in a single player campaign and advertise that even though it is MP focused. There's too much competition in the mp space and many don't see the value in a $60 MP only title. Also MP games have become flavor of the week so it is a gamble to spend $60 on a game that could have its community shrink fast.

The Order's competition is basically Evolve, Majora's Mask and old stuff.

Surely it has to at least hit the top 5 to be moderately successful?
