FEEL THE BERN: Beware Dark Souls 3 PC/Steam users

It's a tricky one, the heart sides with you as it's actually impacting other gamers further than the normal cheating (punishing them for no reason), the head says it's still not right to take away his/her licenses to purchased content.

I have to stick with the head here.

If I were whoever this is I'd worry more about the internet retaliation scene. Which I don't condone at all, but some pissed off people are probably going to go on a hunt.

Well they dont need to close the entire account, which i would say is extreme but fine in this case, but limit the account to the max.
No community, no online, no option to purchase ++++

He got a ghost account with games, which may even be worse for someone.

That's true, but whether it's $15 or $60, it's still effectively the same thing. I know many people who play through the game once and them put in twice that amount of time in online play. I also know people who don't touch it at all. The actual value may be subjective, but I think everyone in both groups would consider it some kind of destruction of property if they were banned from something they bought like this.

Fair enough.

Anyway, I'm surprised nothing has happened yet. Surely there aren't people working the weekends in these companies that are available to monitor and make emergency decisions?

"funny" thing is, if this softbanned people don't understanddiscover what this cunt is doing, they're gonna blame From

And they deserve it. This is amateur hour. Same as Division. Expose their bullshit. From is horrible with everything that isn't gameplay/desgin.

The precedent is that your steam games would just be there at the grace of valve until they decide the plug, including all your singleplayer games that you can and should be able to do whatever you please with.

I know you want to spite this guy because he's being a huge douchebag in dark souls, but it should never be in valve or any other corporation's right to remotely disable all the games you bought.

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face

I agree with this. As much as we'd love to see him burn, this would likely start us down the path to the bad end with digital rights.

Fair enough.

I'm worried that it will take some time even if they do decide to fix it. Seems as though this is something that would need to be fixed by the main coders who created the system. If he's able to keep on like this, his account was never flagged for review for some reason, thus the people who could ban him might not actually be able to see anything on him to ban.

The company may deserve it, but saying its funny at the expense of peoples property which is intentionally getting broken here is stupid.
Theres nothing funny about it.

Would you think its funny if your game got banned because reasons? You would not, you wouldnt find it funny.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't we be safe from this if we intentionally suicide when embered? I'm happy to skip the multiplayer mode while this gets sorted out but I don't want to lose the note/bloodstain system.

Just stay unembered, yeah, you won't risk being invaded. You will miss out on notes though. What is his level? If you are outside of 20 levels from him then you won't have to worry about being invaded by this particular person.

I was going to play some DS3 today, but I think I'll just do something else instead. Gotta say I'm getting tired of hackers on PC. First The Division, now this. Gonna start weighing picking up console versions of online games a lot heavier.

If it's anything like DS2 (where people would drop hacked impossible to obtain items that would get you banned instantly) then I expect that a) From will never fix it, and b) they don't lift softbans either. Anyone who has tried to get a DS2 softban lifted has basically been stuck in a back and forth with Namco telling them to contact From and From telling them to contact Namco.

The fact that valve actually still respect that boundary (bans being on a per game basis, steam marketplace bans being restricted to your ability to use the market, not affecting your games) means they understand that they should not overstep because consumers would hang them for it. Let's keep it that way.

Think for a second before you suggest silly things.

Valve doesn't "destroy" accounts, they just disable nearly all functionality.
He can keep his games, but he should lose his online ability to be part of the community.
Lock trading, chat, and future game purchases/activations.

At least their softban system seems completely toothless since you can just delete your character data, create a new steam account and share the game with the new account.

Yeah, I guess starting a game and losing dozens of hours isn't a big deal.

Their accounts are being flagged. The ban won't come immediately, but it will in due time if From does not disable their anti-cheat system.

Didn't they end up completely disabling it for DS2 due to shit like this? Fairly certain they did for DS1 as well, which I think actually did use VAC for a while.

Notice the two words "At least". They signify that even if this is bad and sucks, you can circumvent it if you've been affected.

Exception, due to Billzard not caring and letting import saves from last gen versions.

Yeah they done that without care. Save importing was needed, but surely something could have been coded up to flag hacked saves attempting to be imported...

I would be okay with this being done. Consequence of screwing with online T&C. Games still exist to be played offline (oh irony).

They disabled it on DS2 and implemented their own anti-cheat system, which was never disabled.

Its a shame, but it seems both of these games are a afterthought on PC, at least Division is.

Reason being the obscure console OS, well thats gonna stop people from cheating right?

It will, for the most part, until its completely jailbroken.

People haven't been getting the message you usually get when you're flagged.

Starting as of recently? Possible From have done something, but their lack of communication won't help. Although I respect they are based in Japan. Namco could handle PR on twitter...

Has anyone seen this before? I was summoned into a world. The guy added souls to me and it made me hollow. How do I fix this?

:(

Something has been bothering me about this for a while. The system is supposed to be over-sensitive to modifications to the point of normative players getting banned for no reasons and his victims for receiving souls from his hits. How did he manage to get get through with his hacked weapon? Wouldn't the game recognize it as an "invalid data" as well?

:lol. Why. Maybe if they used VAC this guy would be banned already instead of fucking shit up for innocents.

VAC isn't a silver bullet. You also have to take care to implement it correctly. However it has the advantage of being tied to steam's systems.

That's a damn good question.

I spend most of my time out of ember anyway (I hardly ever actually pop one, so it doesn't stay long after I kill a boss).

Watch it be part of the game data as a test item.

It doesn't check for that kind of data apparently. From what I understand it checks for the integrity of the save file, but if you do runtime changes the cheat detection will only verify certain parameters.

That YT video description makes me sad, the comments make me salty as fuck. What kind of fuckwit finds this funny?

A lot of people laugh at trolling of all kinds (me included), but usually when it's a level playing field and not someone totally getting fucked unfairly.

For example in DS, when someone rolls off a ledge, or you kick them off, or yes, when you do some ganking. All of those things aren't like this though.

He followed that up with "jk lmao" so uh, yeah.

How is this hilarious in any way?

hes going around using the game's own anti-cheat measures against people, its funny and dumb that this is even possible.

yes its unfortunate for the people being temporarily punished, but there is an element of humor here that this guy even managed to do this

People haven't been getting the message you usually get when you're flagged.

I don't think that message appears immediately either. Everything happens in "waves" when a new update/regulation is released, etc. People are talking about bans because once you encounter a hacker that changes your stats/items, it "invalidates" your data which is periodically uploaded to their servers. Once they spawn back at Firelink the data will already have been shared with said servers.

This isn't trolling. Don't even compare it to trolling.

A lot of people. Some even on this very board apparently.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I said what kind of person, not "how many".

It'll only be temporary if From does something about it. They're being permabanned, from what I've heard.

How so?

Softbanning is permanent.
