Week of January 26th to February the 1st, 2015.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well. If you are looking to see what events are coming up past this week, check out the FGC Event Calendar that our own Malice215 put together.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at the most deserving of a spotlight, BakedYams!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Current fighting games I'm playing are Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Project M. My all time favorite is Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube. Having been a fan of Melee for the N64, I had to give this new iteration a try as a 12 year old. I haven't looked back that day and continued to play competitively viable games.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
One of my favorite mechanics is X-Factor from Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. The game has never gotten boring after playing it for more than 3 years. Giving the player an opportunity to return from losing with a second wind is what makes the game shine compared to all the other fighters in my opinion. Of course a normal comeback is hype but there is just something special when you see an impossible win turn into a possible one.

Another one of my favorite and least favorite mechanic is the parry. Having played 3rd Strike, I fell in love with the animations and characters. Watching EVO Moment #37 as a kid made the FGC look like the place to be for great matches and hype comebacks. However, as I begun to get a grasp of 3rd in my later years, it became frustrating to see players zoning/fireballs completely nullified, even though it was still hype as hell to watch.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
Playing in arcades in the Dominican Republic. Down in the Capital, there was an area called the Malacon, which was known as the commercial district for my area. There was an arcade there that had Marvel vs Capcom 2, DDR and a few other games. Seeing a plethora of characters and explosions on the screen made my little mind explode with joy, wanting to see more of this masterpiece. I got bodied most of the time when I would play some random megaman player and would lose all of my tokens rematching him, those were some salty days.

Another genre I enjoy playing are RPG's, specifically the souls series, can't get enough of that. I like playing FPS's, I used to take it really seriously with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 a couple years ago.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Without a doubt, it has to be Wolverine. His moveset fits my playstyle, relentless, with his BFF Akuma.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
Rush down all the way, the best defense is a good offense. I try to give my opponent no space to collect themselves and think up of a strategy. When I play online, I stick with this mentality and either crash and burn or emerge victorious. After getting into the local scene a couple of years ago, I realized this playstyle was not going to get me wins so I had to level up my playstyle and actually learn the neutral game, I still don't have a good grasp on it but it's there compared to when it was nonexistent. That change occurred the first time I went to NLBC, Henry Cen explained to me that a lot more goes into being a good player like hydration, attitude, sleep, mentality, your opponent's reactions, etc. Talking with him helped me improve dramatically.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is my ability to take losses and learn from them. Having never been good at fighting games, I learned to accept that I was going to lose a lot. First time I saw my local scene at my university, I was destroyed by all the players there but I didn't let that get to me, I just constantly faced them with more ferocity. There were times where they had a 20 win streak on me, but that didn't stop me to improve as a player.

My biggest weakness is trying to be a perfectionist. Each time a combo drops, the opponent gets a hit in or I pressed a wrong button, I let it get to me. I've lost many matches due to this but now I'm learning how to not let mistakes get to me and to just keep on playing like nothing happened.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Never really had much of a fighting game career, just played fighting games for fun. If there had to be a moment I was really proud of is when I was facing Moonz and Rayray in casuals. Moonz had a ridiculous streak going on and no one could even take a match from me, I stepped up to the table and watch able to beat him! Even though it was only one match, that got me pretty excited and got my mind off of the nervous breakdown I was having midmatch... With Rayray, I got 3-0'ed but every match went down to the wire, my nerves got the best of me ;_;
What do you want from future fighting games?
I just want good netplay, better tutorials, and more trials!
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Smedwicks, this man deserves it! If he's done it then I'll put the nail in the coffin and suggest Evilore.
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Street Fighter V, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4. Two of the which aren't fighting games but are the only games I'm interested in at the moment, unless a Marvel vs Capcom 4 gets announced.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

Good thread title won. Also I want to play Gardevoir and Suicune in Pokemon pretty bad.

Can't wait for Tyranitar.

Also Yams likes x-factor? What's wrong with you?

Comeback mechanics have been a staple for Capcom games... Its always been there, its just this time they gave it a name, X-Factor. Plus, what Beef said, Wolverine main. OS for days to get a grab, ricky ortiz for months, and berserker slash mixups for years.

I didn't see a single gif in there. Interview was faked

I did it with my fader persona, not the yams one. Kappa
you're still awesome fader!

Yams' player spotlight is one of those rare moments where you look at the content of something and the poster and think "yup I can see all of that being true" despite never playing him ever before. :lol

My thread title gets used AND I get to do the interview next week?

Man, this is the best week ever\\

(Great interview Yams! And thanks for the nomination! :D)

You deserved it man.
If I go to EVO, you better be treating me like ROYALTY SON!

Flareon gets Flare Blitz and Superpower now.
It's not that bad now. Just the Speed that's a problem.

Flareon is like Nintendo. Has its fans, but is constantly lagging behind others who do the same things but better until it gets similar tools generations later.

Enzo, add another special event to the list.

There is going to be a Topanga exhibition tournament at Tokaigi on the 1st in Japan, so potentially on Saturday night for the US viewers. It's a 2v2 tournament featuring Daigo, Momochi, Tokido, Mago, Bonchan, Fuudo, Kazunoko, Haitani, Uryo, Sako, Choco, Matsuri (female chun li player), Pepeday, Itabashi Zangief, Nemo, and -6. The players will randomly get paired up with one another to form 8 teams.

Stream will be here

Make sure to sign up and login to watch as well as be ready to refresh if the stream notifies you it's kicking you out. That way it won't take a long time to be allowed back into the stream. It's annoying, but it's the only way to watch.

Enzo chose the good Yams avatar.

Also, did Jayce the Ace stop using C.Viper and now using DeCapre?! Are there any other Vipers besides Wolfkrone & Latif?

Thank you! Do you have a start time for this?

Enzo chose the good Yams avatar.
Tried to hunt down the regularly colored one, but I couldn't. Had to bend the current-avatar rule this time because Yams' current avatar is unacceptable.

Holy crap, after all this time I just realized that we see the yoyo strings.
All this time I thought that was the stage, but it's actually the yoyo...

He misses everyone, he's really looking forward to this year. He kept asking me when we were reserving the room who would be there.

Yeah my dad is way cooler than I am, no doubt.

You can tell me in secret if I was his favourite, I won't tell anyone

X-Factor is stupid and cheap but that's kind of why I like the Marvel series anyway.

Also I'm a filthy ZMC main. :p
