midgar didnt have to be "open world" in the sense that FFXV was open world or skyrim is open world... it just needed to be more open than what they actually made, and less tunnels/linear pahways.tbf Midgar is a compressed industrial city, I don't think "open world" was possible for part 1, at least that aspect is true to the original. Part 2 will definitely need to change that, I don't see how they can do it any other way but "open world".
i mean, my god dude, that obnoxious linearity shit is so insufferable and they do it every. fucking. time. and every fucking time, everyone complains about it and they keep doing it lmao. so like i said, FFXV was too far in the other direction (but promising for future installments bc it seemed they got the memo about linearity being a problem!), and ffvii remake brought the hallways right back and i face palmed harder than i ever have (ok not as hard as XIII bc i couldnt even make it through that POS)
im holding out hope for the game to open up in the next parts (i mean, they have in order for it feel like a FF), and they get rid of the tunnels and linearity for the most part, or at least cut way down on them bc some linearity is fine and if implemented well can even be good game design and fun (but i have little hope of that, considering squares infatuation with them)
sorry for the derail. im happy for the games success, i really really enjoyed although i have many complaints, and im looking forward to the rest of the installments
