FINAL FANTASY XII -- US Demo Preview (1UP)

Why are people dismissing the victory fanfare? They've essentially been the same since the beginning, just variations here or there. You could probably say the same thing towards the battle theme music, that they have the same type of compositions but are different enough to call them on their own.

edit: you're basing your opinion on a game you haven't played (KOTOR) and another game you haven't played (VS). That's all sorts of stupid.

And nobody played FFXII too, yet people are comparing its battle system to other games.

Does FFXI have the ability to pause the action while fighting?

Vagrant Story does that too.

I'm just saying many of the new ideas in FFXII were in square games way before kotor was out (visible enemies, no transition to battle screen, pause during combat to navigate menus).

FFVII had the victory fanfare at the Chocobo Races, if I remember right.

"Tango of Tears" is the best thing they've done with that song.

Hah! What's that from?

I can't find the videos. When I click on the link in the preview I get a download page with nothing on it.

Edit n/m got to the third page. No videos for this at all. :(

Thanks for stating the obvious: these ideas were in a lot of other games before KOTOR was out too. Don't talk down to me, you're the one who hasn't played ANY of the games you're talking about, buddy.

links to the videos are on page 5 of this thread.

looks really good. really liking the monster designs. I hope there'll be more playable characters...

Hi, I'd just like to state that you all suck for saying FFXII copies KotOR. They said in the preview it's similar to KotOR to give you an idea of what it's like, not to play the "omg copy" game.

I don't understand why you guys are taking offense to it. Who cares if it seems to be similar to KotOR? KotOR was a magnificant game, easily better than the last couple of FFs. Any pointers they may, or may not, have taken from the game are welcomed in my opinion.

Fact is it's much more similar to KotOR than Vagrant Story. Both active and wait control systems are used in KotOR, as are FFXII's Gambits (you can selected how the other members of your party fight when not given specific orders). Vagrant Story was more rhythm based in its combat, while KotOR and FFXII are menu based.

They may have been influenced by Baldur's Gate, etc. I doubt they modeled it on KOTOR specifically since FFXII was well into development and probably had its combat system fixed before that game was released.

The game is still turn based people, just in a different style.
What a bunch of morons.

"NOOOO DON'T CHANGE IT EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN THE SAME FOR 2 DECADES AND REALLY DOESN'T LIVE UP TO THE EXPECTATIONS OF CURRENT GEN GAMES! NOOOOOOOO!!!"

:lol

I especially like the one about making all FFs like FFVII yeah bitch keep dreaming.

Looks awesome. This will surely be the last PS2 masterpiece.

I love all character designs (excluding Vaan) Ashe look like an European top model.

The gameplay seems awesome too

Good stuff.

I remember matsuno saying something about "this will mainly be a story about dalmasca" or something along those lines...but with the picture of Archadia in the latest scans, I'm not so sure. Maybe it'll only include the three countries (Dalmasca, Archadia, and Rosalia). Personally I'm hoping for a localized setting...it makes the story real.

Edit: Actually, Archadia and Rosalia each rules one continent. So just the three should still be pretty big.

Well... I've got a screen that somebody posted here before, that seems to be a major spoiler to the setting of the game, but I don't think I'll link it. After all, I'd hate to have some weak-willed people start kicking themselves for clicking. ;)

If anybody still really wants it, despite the warning, I'll upload it to ImageShack and send it via PM. Just ask.

You can't tease like that and not link the image! :lol

So yeah shoot a pm my way please.

That's not a spoiler! That's in a lot of the trailers! TEASE!
Well, I said seems to be a spoiler. I think it could be rather huge, and a lot of people don't seem to bring it up, so I didn't know it was well-known. :P

Sorry if it ends up being nothing... :\

Is it from the demo? If so, PM me.

Ah yes, that.
Thanks so much for the offer, but I don't know if I want it that bad at this point.

My general pissed off-ness in that thread was aimed primarily at the fact that it's been 5 years and for no good reason. :)

Once GAF has some impressions and what have you, I'll make a decision. Thanks again.

No harm meant to Scott, but anyone who takes offense to that pic being a spoiler is just, well... :lol
Eh...

I'm just thinking too much about the context of it. I mean, prior to the release of Final Fantasy IX, everybody thought the game was limited to the Mist Continent. It's a huge continent, about 15~ hours of gameplay on it alone, and then suddenly you go through a cave and the world expands... I remember a lot of people, myself included, kind of going "!" It was just a total surprise, and altered the entire worldview of the game.

So, really, it's entirely in the context. If Final Fantasy XII handles the set-up the same way, giving absolutely no hint to this, then 1/3rd or more into the game, suddenly expands... I just think it could, potentially, be pretty impactful, and giving it away prior to release could have ruined that moment for some people. Of course, that was before I knew it was in trailers, so apparently Square Enix isn't really worried about giving it away...

So, yeah, sorry for wasting everybody's time and getting people hyped up for it. I honestly didn't see the E3 2004 trailer, or much footage for this game at all really (I'm actively avoiding it :P), so I didn't know it was already revealed. Even then, why aren't people talking about this? It could have some rather huge ramifications for the worldview, and could even alter the worldview of every single game that has ever taken place in Ivalice...

*shrugs* Maybe that type of stuff just means more to me than most, or maybe I'm just looking into this way too much... Likely the latter, I'm sure... :\

Scott loves him some Square! And there's nothing wrong with that.
I do too. I don't know WHY anymore :D

You just need to be reminded WHY. :)

I know I did until I saw Advent Children- and since then my head has been buzzing with the excitement of what could come from Division 1's FFXIII.

Are you in your early 20's?
Well guess what?
At this point you'll probably get married, have 5 kids, go through four or five different jobs, start balding depeding on your genetics, and actually have a Democratic President in the White House before you play the next single player FF!

THIS IS WHY I HATE SQUARE.

I'm actually 26, married, no kids, and vote Republican... but I understand your frustration. :D

Me and Scott were talking on irc and we think it may be possible that every continent we've been on Ivalice thus far could be floating islands in the sky (atleast based on that pic). It is true that seeing those scenes from the trailers and pics would ruin that..but not much :D I mean, that'd be one of the biggest plot twists ever. I bet there'd be much more to the story than our assumptions too.

It'd be so awesome if in FFXII, you not only find this out, but you get to visit the continents from past Ivalice games and see the bloodline of past characters. In fact, in the new FFXII trailer there's a character who looks like Delita! :D
Eh, I dunno about that. It sure sounds cool, though.

Pfft, you get the idea.

hmm.. FFXII == single player FFXI?

Well I guess you play FF for the story, and no chinese gillfarmers camping your mobs would be nice... I dunno though... I still play FFXI.

Altough by the time this is released I may be done with it. (currently a Lv.74 NIN.. I have pretty much seen everything except for sea) but there is that new expansion...

hmm. Is there going to be a standalone demo anywhere (OPM or something?) I kinda want to check it out, but have never really been a DQ fan.

I demand an rpg as open as GTA goddamit! And it looks like FFXII is my only hope! Square make it so!
Vaan doesn't look like the type to jack someone's car, sorry. :D

Which brings me to my next point:

What the FUCK, Square.

yeah... I wonder if you can just bench him and play with other characters or if he has some skill that makes him indisposable in battle....?

SolidSnakeX said:
He's pretty hot isn't he?
lolz

They must have been listening to Boy George or something when they sketched him up. I'll leave it at that.

Oh wait.

Maybe Vaan can hang out with all the sissy girls on NEXT. Wouldn't that be an exciting episode?

Flo_Evans said:

He's the main character. The Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Zidane Tribal, Tidus (wtf is his last name) of the game. So I wouldn't count on it.

Vaan seems to like to go shopping a lot... why not let the characters change their clothes? :D

Well in 10 you could keep Tidus out of the party most of the time if you wanted.
His last name is..uh..Shot. Like his father Jecht Shot, before him.

And in 9 you could take Zidane out of the party in the last dungeon.

I dunno... so new armour doesn't show up? They should of taken that from FFXI if they where going to steal the battle system.
Yeah, that would be awesome.

Scarlet: In battle yes... but when you're in towns and stuff he's obviously there for the progression of the story...

Himuro said:
lol he's a street rat like Alladin man!
:lol that's the best part.. oh man...

Is your whole party on screen at once? or is it just vaan. And if vaan is not the leader, would the character that is be running around in towns/fields ect?

edit: ahh you can't change equip in the demo?

of course the CGI will all feature his default armour so maybe it will stay the same for consistency... but I always hated RPGs where your characters don't look diffrent with new armour.

Yeah, as long as you have one other party member, you'll never be forced to play as Vaan. Good news for the haters! :D

Meh, that'd be nice but I don't expect it since it takes so much memory to store all kinds of armor. Changing weapon models should be a minimum though IMO.

A big problem with armor like that in FF's is the FMV sequences. Having your character look a certain way in real time and then you go to FMV and he looks nothing like that because they're only using 1 FMV model isn't going to look all that good.

Himuro said:
You can do it in KOTOR so why can't FFXII?

Depends on the approach to creating the models and storing them. And as I recall, FF games generally had more armor than KOTOR does but I never really paid much attention to armor in KOTOR.
