FINAL FANTASY XII -- US Demo Preview (1UP)

IT OWNS! DUN DUN DUNNNN DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNN!

Something like that. :lol

It's depressing and horrible that I find the victory music to be a reason alone to buy this game. Hopefully it isn't just a "demo thing."

I hope not! I LOVE tributes like that! It was played in FFVII when you won Chocobo races!

Yeah. FFVI's victory fanfare was my favorite, and I was dissapointed it wasn't in FFVII...until I got to the Chocobo races.

I want the music during the dungeon combat scenario. That shit is hot hot hot. The game is out in Japan in March, right? Should be getting more OST samples soon, and the OST itself in the coming months. :)

That's honestly a reason I was a bit worried about the change in combat... I actually enjoy walking around, getting in a random battle, and having kickass battle music fire up. Having the enemies spread out over a field seems to make that a bit more complicated, but we'll see. At least the music seems to have a lot of variety, at least in the demo.

The dungeon music, when it goes down to that subtle "twinkling" rhythm, really reminds me of old-school dungeon crawler music. Why? I don't know, it just does.

gameplay looks awesome. battles seem fast compared to other FF games, and no screen transitions/load makes me happy. great music too.

See the whole spiel from Scott for further explanation but yeah, FFXII is like FFXI but single player and made more friendly for a single player mode. I haven't played the latest demo but I'm hoping for some of the more cooperative gameplay elements in FFXI to transition into FFXII.

Oh and latency/claim issues aren't as much of a problem anymore thanks to the revised version of the claim system that got implemented for FFXI if anyone is wondering =P.

Yeah I plan on playing FFXII on a ps3.

I'm no longer skeptical. These gameplay vids have won me over. I don't know which one I'm looking forward to more: Suikoden V or FFXII. My new favorite rpg series vs the rpg series I fucking grew up with. Oh joy. :D
DON'T BE STUPID!!!
FFXII > SUIKODEN V!

SUIKODEN V is GEORGE W. BUSH!
But FFXII is KARL FUCKING ROVE!!!!

Got it?!

Oh man, I'm going crazy.
If Square announces a FF7 remake for PS3 I will go 110% Isamu on this forum.

Bah. :\

First off, the music fucking owns. 'Nuff said.

The graphics? Eh. They're really nice, but the colors and settings (at least in the DEMO areas, obviously) are very bland. FFX seemed so much more varied and exciting, even in the original demo. I'm not a fan of the art design much either. The special effects are really good though, but the rest is a little lackluster and bland, but not bad by any means.

Wait mode bugs me. I HATE the fucking pause, where everything just freezes. It looks so unnatural and just... boring. Especially a couple moments where the person was going through the menu. In the traditional FFs, while it's not exactly exciting going through menus, at least there was movement. Can't they have it techincally "freeze" but have the bad guy/other characters still animate a little? While that may not work, it just looks a little weird to me.

The active mode? Again, blah. I don't want FFXI-influenced gameplay in an offline Final Fantasy. It's just boring to me. Although yeah, it does look like you'd have a lot more "control" over the characters than FFXI. I just don't like that style of combat.

I really want the traditional turn-based gameplay of past FFs but with tons of changes and new elements. They change it up plenty from FF to FF, in my opinion. There's no need for an RE4-rehaul. And that's really not nostalgia talking as I love FFX and I don't scoff at the easier difficulty, voice acting, and other "current-gen" FF changes. I just personally really like the random turnbased battles.

I really do have faith that Square will come through with this, I just hate most of what I've seen so far. But hey, that's just me. To each their own.

That was truly amazong. So brilliantly animated and it all works so smooth and flawless.
The Vagrant Story similarity ain't just in the graphics but music as well.
I really like the look of that blond, bearded guy. Looks very western/scandinavian.

You guys can't be too picky, PS2 graphics have quite frankly reached the end of the rope, what you see is what you will get. I think the game looks fine, and Square are the masters of making the art so damn good that polygon counts and actual texture detail go right out the window. Here's hoping to PS3 allowing FSAA and Anisotropic filtering for emulation to clean up the drab texture/poly look a bit.

The music, both in the trailer and the gameplay videos, are simply awesome. Who is doing the music, btw? Is it still Nobuo Uematsu?

I'm excited for new gameplay in an FF, finally it's here. You can move your characters around, it's more interactive, and there seem to be more options. Even FFX, with it's minor customizations to the traditional battle system, was very welcome IMO. It makes it rather difficult to sit through FF7, 8, and 9 again because their battle systems are so outdated. Just because those battle systems are what MADE FF two decades ago should not imply that they still use it.

Hard to believe it's been FOUR (yes, four) years since Final Fantasy XII was announced. Even though I said we shouldn't be so picky, we can be picky about this. That is totally unacceptable IMO. That's why I say 2006 can't come any sooner... as glad as I am that it's gonna finally be here soon enough, that wait is just ridiculous. Let's just assume the whole FFXI sensation then Square getting acquired by Enix ordeal had a lot to do with the loooong delay of this game. When they make games for PS3, I would really like to see three single-player FF's, just like the PSX. Two is okay only if the third is the FF7 remake. :D But other than that, no exceptions! Square's RPG euphoria was pretty much absent this generation, and I think that really sucks. One of the primary reasons why I bought a PS2 was because I wanted to play more Square games... and there were a lot less of them. Well, they made quite a few, but I wanted more FF, dammit.

Next gen not only needs a good two or three single player FF's, but a new Chrono game would be just awesome as well. I'd also love to see another FFT, but that's wishful thinking. Hell, another Chrono is wishful thinking too...

Sorry guys, Squeenix Japan is freaked out that we've got video up. So we've gotta pull 'em.

Tell Square to stop making people wait four years in between single player FF's, then maybe they won't have to be so paranoid about everyone jumping on videos of gameplay footage.

And JESUS, because it's been so long, you think they'd let a couple minutes of gameplay video slide.

The nerve... ugh.

In the new trailer that look on Ashe's face is amazing. The character's facial expressions in this is so fantastic.

Yeah, I just watched the new trailer. The facial expressions, and character animations are superb. The story also seems really intriguing. Looks like it starts out similar to the beginning of FFIX with Ashe asking to be kidnapped. Can't wait to get my hands on this demo next week, but it's gonna make the wait for the full game even harder.

Sucks that the vids had to get taken down, but atleast I got to see them. The game is looking quite excellent. It's like a single player FFXI, which IMO is a very good thing. I can't wait to play it on the PS3. Right now, it's the game I'm looking forward to the most.

And I agree with Diablos. I haven't waited for a game so long in my fucking life. Tell Square Enix that people really want this. A lot.
It's fucking ridiculous I tell you. Ridiculous.

Watch them delay the US release by six months just for this. :(

I personally think the lack of a new single player FF has put a damper on other rpgs this gen as well. Last gen rpgs evolved plot wise because of FF and lots of companies strived to TOP FF. There was lots of competition despite the fact most would go unknown outside Japan. Still, I think that the lack of a new FF (it's been 4 years since FFX guys...almost 5 in fact if you count Japan's release) has made the industry lose it's drive and source for innovation. Final Fantasy is what kept other developers trying new things and get their balls busted with hard fucking work. We don't get that shit no more. When was the last time I played a long epic rpg? With the exception of SMT: Nocturne..it's been a dman good 2 years or so. Thank GOD for Dragon Quest.

Still, with the amount of time it took to develop FFXII, this game should not only be the best ff ever but the best rpg ever. hands down. 4 years in development? You better fucking believe it.
Good points made, except... FFXII has fallen victim to the DELAY DELAY DELAY syndrome (and by that I mean actual delays, not the politician), so it could be just another average FF for all we know, at least storywise. I do however think the gameplay will really make it a winner.

But on the other hand... ok, for example the trailer says the airships cloud the heavens or whatever? Yeah? So what. So did all of the old school FF's, and FF9... big deal :D The story and setting better be a bit more sophisticated than that!

I have the video preview one and the intro... missing the ending didn't want to see it :lol

The difference is, imagine flying at high speeds over a huge exspansive world with graphics like FFXII's.

I wouldn't expect that until PS3 FF's, bub. Hell, I still defend PS2's capabilities, but I wouldn't believe this kind of thing until I saw it... and even then I probably still wouldn't believe it. :D

I would go as far as saying what made FFXI suck were the job and party ideas themselves. More specifically how non-flexible everything was - you either had certain jobs for a party or you would fail miserably - resulting in hours and hours of waiting for the right job setups.
Actually, that non-flexibility is bullshit...or at least it was when I was still playing. The game was incredibly flexible but the players where so fucking goddamn retarded that they didn't want to try a THING that wasn't in their list of "ideal" parties. I've had parties drop players of non-"ideal" jobs to make room for a "ideal" one only to have the group fall apart and die because the new person sucked ass yet never think about getting the old guy back bacause they were too damn stupid and scared to try anything new.
