enjoy and ... FFXII rox!!!!!!!!!1!1!1!!

W00T THANK YOU!

Edit - It looks awesome. I'm not sure about AI-controlled party members but we'll see. It'll be interesting to see how people accept this and what system FFXIII will use.

Thanks, Lun. Can someone mirror the gameplay vid elsewhere now? :D

I personally think the lack of a new single player FF has put a damper on other rpgs this gen as well. Last gen rpgs evolved plot wise because of FF and lots of companies strived to TOP FF.

I don't think last gen RPGs evolved plot wise because of FF. I think you're thinking of graphics-wise.
In either case, plot-wise, Matsuno is going to be freakin' hard to beat. This guy is the god of RPG plots as evident from Tactics Ogre and Vagrant Story.

Speaking of Vagrant Story, why are people saying FFXII plays more like KOTOR? I have VS in my back log so I still haven't gotten around to playing it but it's a PS game, so it came out way before KOTOR, and if you see the video in this link (only one):

http://www.gamespot.com/ps/rpg/vagrantstory/index.html?q=vagrant story

It looks like FFXII's battle system is mainly influenced by VS. Also, VS is by Matsuno right?

I'm not saying that's exactly where FFXII's system came from, I haven't played many RPGs so I'm not an authority on this subject but it just seems weird KOTOR is mentioned. BTW I also haven't played KOTOR so maybe I'm missing something that'll get me owned here but whatever. :p :D

I'm pretty new to this type of battle system, though I did play KOTOR quite a lot last year. Does it work anything like, say, Parasite Eve? Because I loved Parasite Eve's battle system. Basically just get near enough to an enemy, open up the menu, bam. I honestly didn't really understand the KOTOR system that much... when I'd win, I'd be like... err, okay, cool. I won. I'd basically just keep stringing together attacks... but it all felt pretty random which is something I'm not a fan of.

Like KOTOR? Yes, in a manner. Influenced by it? Not at all. For influences, see (as you said), Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, and especially Final Fantasy XI. I think Scott's post earlier summed it up pretty well.

The fact that it resembles Vagrant and Parasite is good enough for me, seeing as I had a blast with those battle engines. I guess I'll just have to play the demo. :D

Fantastic. Nice one!

edit: THAT is a nice trailer. Can't wait til March.
I know, I just watched it. Holy crap.

Why can't FFXII come out for the holidays?

Battle system isn't really like VS at all, except for the fact that you can see your enemies on screen as they aren't random. In VS you have a sphere grid which opens up for your attack range and you can attack individual parts of enemies bodies. Vagrant Story is such a fantastic game too. My favorite PSone RPG. :D Make sure to go back and finish the last 15 percent of the game after you beat the game the first time!

Just watched those videos.....oh my god. PS2 isn't dead yet!

FFXII and Rogue Galaxy is going to make it tough for me to tear myself away from my PS2. I hope SE is deep into FF12 translation since it has taken so long to develop! Why wait for the game to be done to start translating? Maybe we can get the game in NA around April or May then instead of November. Ugh.

the vids looked great. The battles actually looked fun and engaging. No more cringing when you hear the usual "WOOooooooooooOOOSH!" sound effect and are whisked away to a battle screen. Definately the right way for the FF series to head. Traditional turn based battles are dead.

I agree. I hate random battles.

Having said that, I'm still going to pick up DQ8. At least the battles are quick paced.

I thought the FF battle victory music would be gone but I noticed the remix kicked in as you cleared the stage. Need to keep that nostalgic music in the game in some fashion!

Um, FFXII is MUCH MORE similar to KOTOR than it is to VS. Try again.

edit: you're basing your opinion on a game you haven't played (KOTOR) and another game you haven't played (VS). That's all sorts of stupid.

There is no type of frustration like the frustration of playing a RPG way to long and going through a long hallway to that savepoint where you promise yourself that once you reach that savepoint you will turn off the game and get some rest. Of course this said hallway is riddled with a random encounter every step you take. Its times like that were I want to stab someone.

How is this any different from having to go through a hallway riddled with non-random encounters?

Its more similar to FFXI! Why are we bringing KOTOR into the discussion? I am sure KOTOR wasn't released in Japan. Matsuno wanted to give us an online FFXI experience in a offline game.

Does FFXI have multiple party members? Does FFXI have the ability to pause the action while fighting?

You can't pause an on-line game. And what do you mean by multiple party members?

yes, and not really pause, but you can bring up menus in mid battle like in the FF12 battles. Just because there's pausing doesn't mean it was ripped from KoToR. Vagrant Story did that shit.

I KNOW you can't pause MMORPGs -- I was trying to prove that FFXII is more like KOTOR than FFXI in that regard.

In FFXII you control multiple party members, in FFXI you only control one character.

Therefore, FFXII is more similar to KOTOR than FFXI. Get it?

You cannot control multiple party members in FFXII - you have to abandon one character and switch to the next. You can do exactly the same in FFXI except obviously instead of hijacking some other player's character you swap jobs on your own character.

And the pause thing is a given. Just because you can pause in FFXII doesn't make it any closer to KotoR.

Uhhh, what? You just proved that you can control multiple party members in FFXII. How are you disagreeing with me?

Right, but you CAN'T pause in FFXI, which was my whole point! Gah, you people need to read the FFXII impressions/watch the gameplay videos again or something...

I appreciate that you can switch to another party member but it sounded like you were saying you could control multiple characters simultaneously.

What you need to realise is that FFXI is online whereas KotoR is offline. Using the pause option that is already granted for any offline game as a reason why FFXII is closer to KotoR than FFXI is hardly an argument.

I haven't played FFXI in a while, but didn't they add a player-designated NPC (not sure of the best way to phrase that) that can fight/party alongside your character?

No, really, the trumpet fanfare and the fanfare verse after it is present in FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9, and FF10.

On topic: I keep watching the trailer for some reason. I've been biten by the bug

8 and 10 sound very different, but they have a distinct part of their songs that are from the original fanfare song, to me anyway.
