Considering the last several FF's have been trash I really don't hold any hope for this one either. FF12 was laughable at best. I played it for 3 hours before I just couldn't stomach it anymore. Who wants to play a singler player MMO? Because that's basically what it is.

So yea, this announcement doesn't bother me in the slightest.
obviously it does because you want your opinion heard.

This really is a megaton. While I don't doubt that this is a huge moneyhat and something that Square Enix probably couldn't pass up, it strikes me as a huge betrayal of Sony and something that is incredibly two-faced (similar to what happened with Nintendo originally wanted Sony to build the add-on drive and then pulled the rug out from under them at their conference). While it may not be the biggest betrayal it seems very disingenious.

Because the quality will be compromised. Look at it this way. MGS4 takes up much of a 50gig bluray. That game is smaller than FFXIII will be, guaranteed. Now that it has to worry about fitting on DVDs (however many that is) the game will be worse off for it.

Nevermind the fact that a lot of people have already made the decision to buy a PS3 over a 360 because they thought that this was going to be exclusive. Squeenix just shat on their faces.

meltdown #2

Nevermind the fact that mgs 4 requires you to install each act..negating the 50gb BRD altogether?

In my eyes.. the only way this could be salvaged for Sony is if other FF titles remain exclusive to PS3. If VII remake, Versus, etc are still on PS3 only, then the fanboys will still support that platform. Otherwise it really is over for them as far as diehard fan support goes.

It should be good for Square Enix all around, though.. since they will actually make some good money now.

Doesn't sony own a big chunk of SquareEnix? Do they have voting shares?

At any rate, PS3 is still getting the game. I beg to differ with those that think the PS3 is doomed, though.

nah after square had merged with enix they ratio of shares are lower now..and if u dont own the 51% of the shares , you really dont have any power :)

Holy shit, this E3 delivers. First waggle 1:1 and now FF XIII goes multi. It sucks for FF XIII, it won't take advantage of the hardware or the bluray :/

Can't wait to see what Sony and Nintendo have to show though, this E3 is pretty epic so far :o

FF12 was laughable at best? It's by no means my favorite, but I'd have to say you seem to have an axe to grind here. The game sold a crapload, and along with the other RPGs announced for the 360, should really help the Japanese sales of the console.

If the game is nerfed for DVDs it stopped us from enjoying the game as much as we should have.
Just like how you had to install each act on MGS4, right? The game will work out, just suck it up, and try and put it past you.

It is like HALO 4 coming to PS3, i cant take this anymore, first the avatar now this. i am HURT.

P.S. to the President of the SE, get a translator. please.

In this day and age game development costs are too large to make any moves that unnecessarily minimize your audience. FFXIII is a hugely expensive title that forces Square-Enix to be aggressive in recouping their development costs. We've already seen this with Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII, branching out FFXIII into a brand that utilizes development tools, assets, and technology across a series of games to mitigate some of those expenses. Making the game available on the 360 is the next logical step, the platforms are close enough and neither console has the mainstream market share to justify owning the game solely.

Really, the time of honest-to-goodness exclusives are long dead. Games are too large and too expensive to risk on silly things like traditional platform loyalties. Timed exclusives will exist as long as 1st parties are willing to shell out money and there will always be the 1st party or pseudo-1st party games that of course will remain platform-specific, but otherwise the 3rd party exclusive is going the way of the dinosaur.

I'm inclined to agree with this. Microsoft's push towards the casual gamer really throws this into sharp contrast. They've been working on FFXIII for about four to five years now and that's obviously the biggest individual project the company has ever undertaken. There's no way that Square Enix would recoup their investment in this title exclusively on the PS3 or exclusively on the 360. I'd be willing to bet that the game will hit Windows in the future too.

But, on the other hand, it makes the HDD critical... Was that your point?

if you're a fan of big production games and this news bothers you, you're pretty much a tool. the aggregated 360/ps3 userbase is our last, best bulwark against the casual trash that dominated even that microsoft conference
Yeah, that's also the conclusion that I've come to. I just hope this decision doesn't restrict anything they wanted to do with FF13 in any way.

but by the same boat, exactly how many AAA 3rd party exclusives does MS have?
I wasn't trying to make a comparison to MS -- so much as a point about how, given the realities of the marketplace, the old loyalties are disappearing, and the era of the third-party exclusive is disappearing altogether.

Its hard not to spin this as a negative for Sony. Outside of MGS4, htey've lost almost every major exclusive. It doesn't kill the PS3 by any means, but it hurts their image and eliminates FFXIII as a system seller.

Wow, betrayalton indeed :lol

After this news, MGS4 is the only (and last?) relevant third party exclusive of PS3. If Konami doesn't release the game on the 360 (while the rest of the third parties are doing it) they're going to look like a bunch of idiots or something.

BTW, right now I'm thinking on selling my PS3. I don't want to be stuck with a dea... I mean, right now I can sell it for a good price, right?. Right?.
There's always Tekken 6.

lulz

We don't know if there will be any differences yet, do we? I own both systems, so I'm holding off judgment, but it'll likely boil down to load time & disc swapping/install times at certain points, right?

thats interesting that Japanese sales will increase due to a game not being released on the console there...

wow at the square backstabbing didnt see that comming ,_,
You're kidding, right? Square did this before and even as Square-Enix, it was only a matter of time before they did it again. Only last time it was Nintendo that felt the cold steel in their backs.

When he first came on, I thought 'what? wow, this HAS to be ffxiii...' then he rattled on about the last remnant and went. Was absolutely gutted. When he came back, i just burst out laughing, my cousin is going to be gutted about this. Still, I'll probably pick it up on PS3, but this is excellent news imo. Don't care about financial repurcussions for anyone involved, but for people who just want to play good games, this is great.

How many discs do you guys think FF13 will span across for the 360 version?

Who knows? But at least 360 users won't have to suffer through a mandatory install.

QFT.

People are trying troll on multi-DVDs while installing blu-ray games (see: MGS4) takes the same, if not more time to just change a disc.

besada said:
Except it installs in 5GB chunks in between every act, so it's hardly really using that BluRay superiority.

According to your own statement above, it can't be much larger unless it slops over onto multiple discs. Predicting a multi-disc FF13 for the PS3?
Are you serious? If the data wasn't on the Blu Ray it wouldn't be in the game. The installs have nothing to do with that. That's a really dumb statement you just made.

That second part was even dumber. MGS4 really took advantage of the bluray media and spread its wings. FF13 is larger so it won't be able to spread its wings as much, but it'd still be much better off with 50gigs (five DVDs worth of data, accounting for game data on all DVDs the game would be a 10 disk game on the 360 if they actually took advantage of BluRay to it's fullest extent).

It's over! This is the way the world ends!

M$ has seriously caught nearly every one of PS3's punches.

360 is the biggest console for RPG's bar none now.

The absolute ONLY hope left for Sony this gen RPG-wise is a FFVII remake.

as soon as i saw the guy from SE i knew it was coming, its not terrible news unless its simultaneous release on multiple platforms.

we'll have to see how it goes tomorrow.

overall the ms conference was a snore fest except for the end.

Considering Final Fantasy originated on Nintendo systems I don't see your point.

P.S. he was perfectly understandable.

ff13 on 360 may have made microsoft (as of now) win e3, but lets not forget their shitty presentation with a lackluster showing of good games.

you people only know the present. not the future. it's only betrayal if the 360 gets VII(if it's made) and Versus. sony could make a huge announcement and keep those SE titles solid. or they could screw it all up and slowly lose it too.

That's bullshit. SONY can't hold on to exclusivity. Microsoft has a large number of third party exclusives and gets more announced every few months. Exclusives are alive. Sony just won't pay for them.

Yes, there is. We've never seen video of Lucy, Carbuncle, or any of that stuff.
