Final Fantasy XIII post-release comparison/garbage thread

Regarding the 576p issue / non-issue (you choose)

Given that most of us are peering in from the outside, and the development of modern gaming software is deeply complex and challenging, if there is indeed native resolution difference, it will be hard to pinpoint why exactly that is without full disclosure from S-E.

There could be a very valid technical reason for the resolution reduction, if indeed there is one. Alternatively, parity might have been very achievable, but in truth only an insider can say.

Don't expect an accurate answer, for S-E to even acknowledge it now would be a marketing faux-pas.

I'll give S-E the benefit of the doubt, they are in the business of making as much money as possible. A lack of parity between versions, beyond the obvious storage issues, would hinder that.

You don't need to know a lot about the complexities of software development to know that the lead candidate for the resolution reduction was to maintain a 30 FPS framerate. At least SE did the right thing instead of pulling a Bayonetta and tormenting the player with bad framerates and insane screen tearing. What would you rather have? A reduction in resolution or a bad framerate? The question is rhetorical because it doesn't really matter how good a game looks if it's unplayable.

Photoshop resizes things pretty nicely.
These look like MS Paint screens.

Obviously SE used PRINTSCREEN function, and let mouse cursor left on the picture.

so unprofessional.:lol :lol :lol

Why the printscreen should be used? weird.

Edit. Maybe they use it for erase EXIF data:lol :lol :lol

Open it then PRINTSCRREN it,edited them then terribly resized.

Probably did captures from analog component video, added sharpness filter in an attempt to hide the fact that it's a lower rendering resolution, and just turned the filter up way too high, resulting in sharpening artifacts that look worse than just showing the lower rendering resolution to begin with. :lol

This. Ten or so px on the left and right, always even, with a vertical bar of brightness right after, is the "gap" in an analog video signal for the electron gun in a CRT to get back to the other side of the screen, isn't it? I always, always see the exact same thing when working with video intended for legacy display devices.

Here, here's an example from last week.

I couldn't stand it in the BBC2 Demo on 360.

you can see it definitely here

I remember it looked awesome in the original screens. It still looks decent though but way more blocky. :(

From page 2 (possible reason for resolution reduction):
I remembered this older article,
While the eDRAM gives the 360 tangible advantages over the PS3 (it’s the reason why so many cross-format titles have anti-aliasing on 360 while it is omitted on the PS3 versions), 10Mb isn’t really enough for a full 720p framebuffer with the added overhead of anti-aliasing. Instead, developers switch memory in and out of the eDRAM in a process called ‘tiling’. This incurs an increased geometry cost for polygons that span more than one tile. In plain English? Realistically we expect the 360 version to match the 720p and 2x multisampling anti-aliasing of the PS3 game, but at a cost– the HDR lighting in the PS3 game will most likely be pared down from high range to medium range dynamic rendering.

Few games on 360 run with ‘proper’ HDR. Halo 3 is one of them, but this comes at a cost of a sub-HD resolution and no anti-aliasing. In the case of Final Fantasy XIII, the drop down to MDR simply makes more sense as opposed to savagely cutting down resolution or anti-aliasing. So aside from small changes to lighting, we expect the games to be totally like for like in the real time 3D sections, and due to that lightning fast eDRAM, there’s a strong chance that performance may actually be smoother. How small will the changes to lighting be? Considering we spent the best part of the day firing off 'is it proper HDR/isn’t it' emails to one-another, let’s just say that it’s highly unlikely any one will notice. A useful by-product of moving away from proper HDR on 360 will be that the alpha transparency issues the PS3 version has with the way it handles characters’ hair will most likely vanish.

I (poorly) bolded the parts that seemed important. I'm guessing that SE decided to keep the HDR lighting at the cost of resolution on the 360.

what anime is that?

fernoca said:
Yep..
All the pics has been distributed by the different Square-Enix regions (US, Europe).

Damn. That's quite messed up. First they kinda admit to have released "doctored" 360 pics and now they do the opposite by releasing bad captures.

I bet Microsoft is not amused.

Kobato., but it's just what I had clean digital source handy and already analyzed for so I could cap the nifty Yatta cropping interface with built-in zoom. HD stuff does the same thing.

But that's doesn't explain the badly-taken pictures (576p).
If the pictures were taken wrong (at a low res) or something, then the whole resolution thing is thrown out of the window, since all the resolution problems/talk are because of the size of the "direct feed pics", and the quality of them...at least at the moment...if anything that could explain the lower-res textures on the ground, but then..it seems the textures were low-res anyway.

Wouldn't it be in Microsoft interest to not admit the 360 version is lower res than PS3? Perhaps that has a hand in all of this PR disaster, SE are surely hiding something after send three batches of questionable screenshots out

The resolution was determined by viewing polygon edges, not by the resolution or quality of the actual pictures and since the GUI of the 360 version was determined to be 720p, I'm inclined to believe the native res is indeed 576p.

There's no way that's the actual game. SE will never release something that looks like that, right? The resolution looks worse than Halo 3.

Yeah but the analize that was made yesterday was still based on similar pictures and clips...and like many other games at even lower resolutions, it wouldn't even look as bad as the pics make it.

By cropping the black border of the pics and stretching the pics to fit the actual ratio, the pixels will be overblown/stretched a little..and cause an even weirder resolution and lower-res than mentioned already.

But we'll have to wait..

Oh Square.... :lol

The meristation shots though show an obvious resolution issue. You can definitely see the native resolution is lower than the PS3 shot.

Hey so this is the thread where ppl come to talk about how excited they are that a new final fantasy is coming out soon right?

*looks around*

Well, at least I'm fucking excited.

Perhaps. We'll just have to wait till someone can actually post decent screens since SE sure as hell can't. :lol

I'm looking forward to it still! I've learned to try things myself before judging since I loved SO3 and everyone else seems to hate it with a passion. :lol

Yeah... :lol
Also troll-comments can get people banned in this thread..but when the developer/publisher is the one doing the trolling..I just don't know. :lol

If the engine is actually outputting that to framebuffer, I would be really, really amused and amazed, though I guess it -does- show up in proper digital sources sometimes. It's definitely not in how the game renders for PS3 HDMI output though.

Aaand, to get back on topic, I'm really looking forward to seeing the US versions of the optima names, and maybe writing up a comparison. There's a lot of room for the translator to be creative and unique there.

I'm pretty psyched. I never play these things at launch - this is probably the first FF I'll be playing at launch since FF2 (IV) on SNES. Thinking about ordering the LE guidebook from Amazon since it looks quite sweet, but I'm not sure.

Or are they? I know their PR people have gotten messages about the current batch the US team sent out.

Photoshopped screens, screens with mouse cursors, screens with different resolutions...

They're still making that mistake? I remember that happening with pre-release screens of The Last Remnant.

Edit:
Like this one.

Or this one.

It was in the second batch of screens. We're on the third batch now. Maybe fourth time's the charm? :lol

March NPD will definitely be legendary that's for sure, I bet a very close amount of copies sold between both versions.

Going to go for the Ps3 version this time, since the game is meant to be played on the Ps3.

Hopefully, the Western backlash against ff13 will mean SE will do world releases from now on to ensure that criticism doesn't eat into potential potential sales

Yup. I think it was already their intention to do worldwide releases... they somehow messed up with XIII (barely... 3 months is not bad)... but now with western sales being eaten away by importers who end up trashing the game in advance anyway.. it's heavily in their interest to get a simultaneous release.

They're getting closer. At least it's not 6 months like usual :lol
