Final Fantasy XIV Information Thread | PC Open Beta... yeah it's not really open.

Honestly as someone who has played and will continue to play a caster, auto-attack is not a big deal for me. I do agree that aesthetically it'll be weird if your character is simply standing around waiting for your next command when you're up close meleeing the mob. However, since TP is still part of the game, I can't imagine there are no regular attacks available as a means to gain TP. I assume most, if not all, of the weapon command actions like RLB will still require TP to use.

I'm surprised no one asked whether Skill Chains will make a reappearance.

Some of you are consistently down on FFXIV whenever we get new info. I can't figure out if you're hoping it will fail or are just simply pessimistic. Honestly, I wonder how many actually spent enough time in XI to have an informative opinion.

New tactic. Do your melee combination then run back out of aoe range. When you're ready to do another melee combination run back and repeat. It will probably suck to be a melee. Rangers unite!

Sage says they won't split severs by language (or region)... just because they didn't so in XI.

Frankly, this was by far the worst thing that happened on FFXI and will end up the biggest reason why I'll avoid XIV. Seriously, I can't think of much merit in it, except that SQEX can reduce the costs. Hell.

Gosh, I'm the only one here that loved FFXI for that feature ?
In any other MMO, if you don't play in the common raiding times, you miss all the endgame content. I worked in shifts … coming home at any hour and finding people/linkshels playing the game 24/7 saved the experience for me ! Also, I love JP parties !

I just want to be separate from PC users if possible. Gilsellers would stick to pc too I bet. If they would allow a console only server, I'd for sure get it on ps3.

Believe.

I know I might be in the minority here, but I actually wouldn't mind playing this game even if it was just a revamped version of FFXI. Personally, I think the formula is fine with a few fixes and "modernizing" (With things like quest exp, less weekly popping NMs and more instances, etc.).

Honestly, the most annoying parts of FFXI were having dedicated people getting pop window times for HNMs, not being able to solo. If they fixed these kinds of things, I'd be in. I really enjoyed the battle system from XI, so I don't mind if they don't deviate from it that much.

FFXI was a crushing disappointment for me, not quite on the level of PSU, but very close.

In some ways worse because there is a great game there, it's just buried under a few tons of chocobo shit.

If they de-hateify the gameplay in XIV (XIV, really?), I'll be onboard to waste a few hundred hours of my life, otherwise, I'll be another bitter poster on messageboards whenever XIV topics come up.

You're going to need to go into more detail here.

Judging by the thread, you wouldn't be in the minority. I'm sure people would jump all over a tweaked, prettier FFXI.

As for HNM pops and such? I honestly don't see those going away even in this game. SE knows they will always have that segment of the hardcore willing to camp the same mobs for over 5 years. I would bet money timed HNMs make it into FFXIV.

It has been described earlier, but you'll notice how raw the camera controls are once you see the videos I'm about to put up. Simply put, it looks a LOT better on carefully staged screenshots than playing it live.

RMT will be on consoles servers, region specific servers, or w/e type of servers you want to make.

They are even on browser based games, or avatar centred forums, a PS3 won't stop them from making their busines.

Okay. Any impressions on anything else? The battle system? How it works? So forth?

Details.

Some points that need to be clarified:

It is NOT a seamless world like World of Warcraft. Areas are bigger than FFXI and not as segmented (3 zone cities from XI come to mind), but you won't be able to seamlessly travel from one grassy mountain zone to a swamp without going through a loading screen.

There will be NO PvP at launch. The designers expressed a dislike for open world player combat, so PvP would be added through a patch in the form of tightly controlled battleground scenarios.

Mounts will play an important role in the game, but they won't be like in FFXI. When asked if this meant that your Chocobo would be a persistent pet ally in the world, the answer was "wait till TGS." There will be more beasts other than Chocobos that can serve as mounts as well.

Group quests send you to a specific zone in the game where you have to complete a goal such as slaying X or Y beast, similar enough to Monster Hunter to be mentioned by name. You can switch class on the fly by merely swapping your weapon.

There will be no voice chat in the game. When pressed on the issue, they said that while they understand that other games do need voice chat for group play, the game's pace is designed so that talking won't be necessary. It can only be implied that you'll have time to type out what you need to communicate even during heated combat.

You'll see this and more once the interview goes live.

Which current MMO supports voice chat without the use of a 3rd party software? Honestly, if we can do complicated strategic fights like the Divine Battle (no we did not and never mana burned it with BLM) and Vrtra encounter without voice chat back in XI, I don't see why it would be a big deal in XIV.

I'm going to believe my friend's experience in that XI's alpha and beta builds were completely different games, so I expect XIV to be the same. It's fine to state the facts, but I'm pretty tired of people claiming what we see today is exactly what we'll be getting later on. How many of you actually work in game developments anyway?

WoW, I guess... thanks for the info GT Ves :)!

Oh, excuse us. We have to work in games development to give our opinions on what we see right now (which is what SE wants)? Oh shit. Close the forum down. We've been had!

Not at all. However, implying that it is exactly what we'll be getting is pretty ridiculous. Apparently you don't read the whole post, just parts you'd like to argue about. Honestly, I don't really know what you're agenda is, but you've always came across as being negative in several MMO threads, not just this one.

It would just be nice if your opinions weren't broad generalizations about things we still don't completely understand :P

Also, the poster that was talking about the possibility of combining different abilities/skills that result in even better ones might not be that far off.

The Japanese build was shown during the interviews today. The one thing I noticed was the character models/animations looked much better than what was on the show floor, but they were using that effect SotC pioneered to mask draw distance (far away textures look horrible until you get close enough). The person playing it (a dev team member) was having some problems with the camera every now and then, but otherwise it looked much better when it was being shown in a controlled demo.

No, I read the whole post. I commented on the part that didn't need to be said at all. But you like...

Blizzard added a voice chat feature to WoW later into the game. Most people don't like it, but it's there. Just because you can use typing for communication, doesn't mean voice chat should be left out. This will be consoles too and you can't depend on PS3 players to lug keyboards around to play this. It's shortsighting to not include voicechat in 2009.

We're merely commenting on what we see here and now. What we're presented with. Not beta. This. There is nothing wrong with that. Will it change? Sure. Should we shut up about it? No. Otherwise, lock the thread until open beta since discussion is discouraged.

This may be why MS and SE talks have stalled on this game. No voice chat. Which may be mandatory on XB live games.

As for being negative in threads? I'm critical. Not negative. I'm hyped for several and enjoy several. I'm hyped to see what Blizzard brings. I'm going to be playing Aion. I enjoy LotRO. Doesn't mean I have to overlook their shortcomings and realities of other games (such as Aion's).

It would just be nice if your opinions weren't broad generalizations about things we still don't completely understand :P

Would be great if they would explain things in such a way where broad strokes weren't needed. Eh? =P

That's what that was! I thought it looks a bit strange in the cruddy videos we saw. Was the dev playing on a keyboard or DS3?

Keyboard/Mouse.

Hmm...did you play the demo (on the floor) at all having played FFXI before? Was there a need to use the mouse at all in your estimation? I didn't even touch it in FFXI.

I posted impressions in the old thread but FF XI white knights crucified me for my complaints. Yes, I played the show floor demo. The mouse was available but you do not need it I guess since they're not doing pvp anytime soon. However, they inverted the mouse controls (click drag Right to move the camera left, click and drag down to move camera up) from what I was used to, but the keyboard arrow keys were right to me. So I played WASD + arrow keys, which was just like how I played FF XI for movement (I had no issue with this part really, just would have liked to try out the mouse/keyboard like playing WoW to see how it stacked up). I was told the wrong info about targeting - initially I was told you had to press Tab + Enter + X to target and lock on, but it is just Tab + X. You can also just TAB and hit F and then attack freely without locking on. At my second go, it played much better knowing this. The real issues were just related to it being alpha - very choppy and clunky, few bugs here and there, and it was just a slay quest (kill # of X monster). Felt like some slight delay between hitting an action bar # and the action being performed. However, after going through the interview, I'm still worried about this game's design.

I kind of like that there is no auto attack, as a healer in FF11 you had to always pay attention to what you were doing unlike the melee classes that would only have to select a TP attack every half a minute. (and where always the l33t players.. sigh)

Always kind of bugged me, so now they have to actually play the game :P

I see this alot and it really irks me every time and makes me wonder just what kind of activities people did in the game to believe this tripe.

"oh sorry I was watching TV" springs to mind.

This is the most disappointing thing I have heard so far, are you saying this based off the alpha build or from what the developers told you.

Its more the proportion of their body, it just seems too tall and uneven (long chest, short legs) but the facial expressions look good for the most part, although the /cheer emote (I assume) looked too much like a little boy. I love my Taru, but perhaps it will grow on me, idk.

I agree 100% with you; these thnigs have all crossed my mind.

If you actually look at all the character designs, all the designs just look stretched/taller. Must be part of the designers style. It is just much more noticeable in the taru's.

What is bugging me about the new taru animation run is that there is not enough movement in the actually torso. It looks like the arms and legs flail at mach 1 and the body stays in the same position.

I am sure this will be worked on though.

On another note, as for the whole argument of cross servers. I am another person who does not really mind. I just hope the translating system works much better with more options this time.

Back when I was playing, I was way ahead of 99% of the north american pack and was either forced to wait for other North Americans to catch up to me, or continue playing with Japanese players. I did the latter but it wasn't easy, at least not at first.

At the time, alot of japanese people didn't want to invite or play with any english people at all. I understood though, there were a lot of english people constantly bothering them to help them out with tough quests. I blame all this hate purely on Square-Enix. Had they released FFXI at the same time world wide, there wouldn't have been this dilemma because everyone would have been the same level. It looks like this won't be the case this time around which is good.

Since I wasn't getting invited to party's by the japanese players, I was forced to make my own parties with them, with those limited communication sentences. That sucked big time, but eventually I got known a bit through some of the regulars, and forming a party wasn't as hard. I even started to get invited by a couple of people.

If they improve upon the translate system, it will all be fine.

Weird. I've had healers say the same thing.

Re: Trlanslation. This would be a huge pain in the butt to do, but a huge boon. hotlinking quests, missions or whatever into chat so it will make it easier for everyone to understand what you're forming a group. This would work wonders. In fact, do it for everything. Items, abilities, etc.

The interview will be up...sometime hopefully (it's in the queue to be cut, along with a 40min FF XIII interview - though i posted the big info from that one in the FF XIII thread). I'll post a link to it then. Sage Sundi was a pretty cool guy. He saw my hat and knew it was a Texas (UT) hat, and mentioned he'd be down in Austin for GDC Austin. Perhaps FF XIV will be there in some form?

At least they won't be able to hack on a ps3 and I'd feel I have a good chance at claiming, or beating them at stuff. I've seen my fair share of rmt hacking, warping, speeding in ffxi. Oh man, if they did come to the PS3 server, at least I'd also get some good fun out of trying to mpk them before SE fix it again. I hope they don't have the disappear mob system in at first.

I kind of expect to see this in all current and future MMO's actually, I'm sure SE won't bother however.

I would also like to see cursor text on the map, mainly for grid coordinates and right click to add a note to the map. (the PS3 is really guna hold this game back)

I don't think they will need that system this time around if the zones are much bigger.
