Looking at his Twitter account, I think Ken Penders genuinely believes that he can use Knuckles the Echidna as one of his characters now that Archie and Sega parted ways.
Guy was given a Knuckles spin-off comic when before SA1 when next to nothing was known of Knuckles' backstory at the time. He basically could go wild & fill in the blanks anyway he wanted & was never able to let go of that work.
Many legendary comic creators (Siegel & Shuster, Kirby, Ditko, etc.) have fought for decades to get what they believe is rightfully theirs from the comic book publishers they worked for and have only managed to get marginal victories if anything at all, and many fucking die long before said victories are even achieved, but Ken motherfuckin' Penders, of all people, actually managed to win his fucking fight over a 64-pack of Knuckles clones. Just think about that shit for a moment.
Hell, not only did Bill Finger die penniless before he actively got recognized for everything he did to actually create everything we love about Batman, his son fucking died trying to fight for it too.
But Ken fucking Penders is the one lucky asshole who actually manages to win the rights case.
And you can't even celebrate the marginal victory that he just set a better precident for other creatives being able to get rights, because he had to tank an entire line of comics that other better creatives were all working on in order to do it.
