Fox guy?
From the new famitsu.
edit. There was a guy whose's sprite looked alot like Owain (named Odin) in the video, as well.
Sev/Luc + Ini/Owain were the ones that won the popularity contest and were in the hot spring dlc for awakening.
Fox guy?
Hoshido wins.Guess this means the Inigo lookalike is Hoshido exclusive then.

I see.
It also looks like everyone has their own skill? Couldn't tell if it was character specific or just something from their class.
The one that people think is a Inigo-lookalike seems to be a Norh mercenary too.
I give up. I hope you're happy casual Awakening players, you've singlehandedly allowed this weeb'ed up idiocy to happen to what most long time players considered a nice challenging SRPG. I'm out.
I'm back, now with some rational thinking.
I'll bite. If, like all of you are saying, all of the additions are totally optional then it can't be that bad. I still stand by on this, the art direction is bad, it looks too "cutesy" which doesn't fit Fire Emblem at all. That's all I have left to say. Here's hoping the pandering level stays where it's at and see some more good old Fire Emblem gameplay at E3
Not really trying to "defend" it you know, just clarifying a bit about the word Otaku itself. I just find it a bit of a funny situation, like a nerd calling others nerds.
Also, like it or not, the direction they went with Awakening, if you believe that they're went towards "Otaku pandering", saved the franchise from being discontinued. That doesn't make it "right", but it is what it is.
Sorry if this conversation ended but I've been catching up on this thread and wanted to comment on this:
I have a friend here at FSU who's a Japanese exchange student and we actually had a conversation about this. Otaku and hikokimori are more or less synonymous with each other, and she told me straight up that she wouldn't talk to or associate with otaku because of how fucking weird they are and because it's social suicide. Being a "nerd" is kind of in right now in the west - obviously if you're a fucking weird ass then not really, but it's normal to have hobbies like gaming and computing or whatever. We have a lot of mutual friends, many of which practice for hours and hours to play competitive Smash Bros or Street Fighter, or are members of the university film committee.
Hikokimori and GAF computer nerds are not the same thing - that's a total fallacy.
Err, no they're not.I have a friend here at FSU who's a Japanese exchange student and we actually had a conversation about this. Otaku and hikokimori are more or less synonymous with each other,
I don't know much about Japanese culture, is she an expert?
Not yet from what I remember, but most likely is going to be a variation of this piece of art that show the 2 factions...Have we seen photos of the final special box set product?
Well that was fast. Hopefully this time you can stay around all the filthy "casual Awakening players."![]()
Anyways, here's a question: if you want to have a complete package, meaning you want to be able to play both routes with all the available content, you are required to download whichever route you don't pick as DLC, right?
So I can't just buy two physical cartridges of the two versions since it will be treated as a different game individually, right? Hmm.
The portrayal of Otaku in mediums could be a clue.
I elaborated further in my original post, hope you understand what I meant now.
I don't know much about Japanese culture, is she an expert? I mean, I heard that honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where I can become successful by being a nerd. If I screw myself over someone fictional in Japan, I bring shame to myself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
I guess this means the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FE:if in either version, nor will they purchase any of IS's games. This is HUGE. Maybe I can laugh all I want, but IS has alienated an entire fractional market with this move.
IS, publicly apologize and cancel face rubbing or you can kiss your business goodbye.
Err, no they're not.
All those people you see in Akihabara and Comiket are not hikikomori.
Lol. You want to tell me that my friend, born and raised in Japan, doesn't have a reasonable understanding of the social implications behind the word "otaku"? This game will sell to that market in Japan, as many games and anime do, but that doesn't mean anything when we're talking about social acceptability.
Laughing Banana is trying to draw a connection between labels that don't mean the same thing and don't have the same implications. This game in particular has nothing to do with that.
I'm not sure of you got that mine was a parody of a really infamous post. Your premise lent itself too much to the joke for me to resist![]()

. That doesn't make "otaku" any less ugly of a label, and it certainly doesn't mean it's comparable to the computer geeks we have on GAF. LB's example doesn't work because it's a lot more socially acceptable to play video games and build computers as a hobby in America and Europe than it is to be an otaku in Japan.
The Nomura Research Institute (NRI) has made two major studies into otaku, the first in 2004 and a revised study with a more specific definition in 2005.[27][28] The 2005 study defines twelve major fields of otaku interests. Of these groups, manga (Japanese comics) was the largest, with 350,000 individuals and ¥83 billion market scale. Idol otaku were the next largest group, with 280,000 individuals and ¥61 billion. Travel otaku with 250,000 individuals and ¥81 billion. PC otaku with 190,000 individuals and ¥36 billion. Video game otaku with 160,000 individuals and ¥21 billion. Automobile otaku with 140,000 individuals and ¥54 billion. Animation (anime) otaku with 110,000 individuals and ¥20 billion. The remaining five categories include Mobile IT equipment otaku, with 70,000 individuals and ¥8 billion; Audio-visual equipment otaku, with 60,000 individuals and ¥12 billion; camera otaku, with 50,000 individuals and ¥18 billion; fashion otaku, with 40,000 individuals and ¥13 billion; and railway otaku, with 20,000 individuals and ¥4 billion.[28] These values were partially released with a much higher estimation in 2004, but this definition focused on the consumerism and not the "unique psychological characteristics" of otaku used in the 2005 study.[27][28]
It seems like the "Odin" character (only shown in a map sprite) in the castle video really is Owain (well, in the same sense that Luna is Severa, whatever it is). His Grandmaster sprite's head matches Odin's head perfectly.

Oddly though, differently from the Inigo and Severa lookalikes who kept their base class, his class seems to be Dark Mage. Still, it seems like he's with Nohr too, just like the other two.
This seems very specific (children units only, all members of Nohr's forces), so I really think there's going to be a story reason rather than just design references.
If this game only sells to Otaku, it's going to really underperfom. Have you looked at sales numbers for anime otaku centered games?:
If this game only sells to Otaku, it's going to really underperfom. Have you looked at sales numbers for anime otaku centered games? It's not really a market that you can focus if you want growth, but something that gives a (low) baseline.
Isn't that mostly a matter of different society values though? "Otaku" in Japan isn't used only for anime fans, but for any obsession with anything that's seen as anti-social. Yet, it always carries this derogatory meaning since they're seen as deviating from the proper role in society.
From the wikipedia article:
Hm. I assumed because of the growing amount of focus going towards that audience over the past few years that it was a pretty solid market. Whales and such. Isn't shit like Senren Kagura and Neptunia pretty successful over there? I haven't actually looked at numbers, I just assumed they were.
Absolutely, yeah. And that's why I take issue with what Laughing Banana is saying. "Otaku" and "nerd" might have been relatively synonymous twenty or so years ago, but today? I haven't heard "nerd" or "geek" used in a derogatory way in yeeeeeeaaaars, whereas otaku are seen as a crowd you wouldn't want to associate with.
I will admit that saying they're all hikokimori was reaching though. That's disingenuous. Though I will say that portrayal of otaku in media is almost always the hikokimori stereotype and it can't be that way for no reason.
I think Senran is the most successful. Never looked at Neptunia. They both pale to what Awakening brought in though.

Anyway for Severa and Owain so far.
edit.
Completely wrong, forgot Wood was mistranslated name for Owain earlier.

No, the niche otaku games don't sell that much. They just have small, dedicated fanbases. If you look at the best-selling games in Japan, it's all mostly family-friendly stuff and Monster Hunter. Neptune games actually sell better in the west than in Japan.
Here are some examples of week 1 sales for Neptunia and Senran Kagura from a quick search through past Media Create threads.
Neptunia
(PSV) Hyperdimension Neptunia U (Compile Heart, 08/28/14) 34,980
(PS4) Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory II # (Compile Heart) {2015.04.23} (¥7.538) - 22.609 / NEW
Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk-2 (Compile Heart) - 32,751
Senran Kagura
12./00. [PS4] Senran Kagura Estival Versus # <ACT> (Marvelous) {2015.03.26} (¥8.618) - 30.247 / NEW
10./00. [PSV] Senran Kagura Estival Versus # <ACT> (Marvelous) {2015.03.26} (¥7.538) - 44.548 / NEW
Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus - 94,324
Senran Kagura 2 - 46,496
In comparison, Fire Emblem Awakening sold 242,600 in its first week and even Shadow Dragon (DS) managed 148,000 and New Mystery 136,367 units in their respective first weeks. Now, if you go back to Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, you get significantly lower numbers (73,359 1st week for Radiant Dawn), but those two are a big drop from both the games before and after them.
What's generally acceptable in Japan doesn't mean it's generally acceptable in the States. Fire Emblem is nothing compared to the hardcore otaku stuff there.
Yeah, FE is definitely not an otaku game like Neptunia or whatnot. No where near that bad, thank the gods.
Even the fanservice-y designs, maids, and the magical girl looking loli sister, since I'm not Japanese, I don't know if those designs are more otaku oriented or if they're actually reflective of more mainstream tastes and are included for broad appeal.
I don't watch much anime anymore, so maybe it's both haha
In Japan or in general? I don't pay attention to Japanese game sales - genuinely curious here.

Potentially dumb question (apologies if so): have we gotten a look at the various body types for the avatar in Fire Emblem IF?
I was a bit bummed that you were limited to: little boy, average dude and huge dude in Awakening. (for the males at least). Would have loved a Chrom, Lon'qu,etc. body type
(yes I'm shallow)

Mess, how you dare to dis on of the best features of AwakeningAlso Awakening style compatibility tester that doesn't actually do anything.

Same here, some of the designs look a bit "out there". And I was a fan of Awakening's designs overall. Except Olivia.True, though I admittedly do worry all that stuff and face rubbing is the beginning of a slippery slope. That gold digger character looks genuinely awful - same with Booby Belt.
Yeah, it's hard to explain. I guess when I think of otaku I think of obsessive fetishization of female characters. Like pet little sisters with enormous pigtails and a million bows and overly submissive "perfect" girls with no flaws. Or when a female character has to be cute or sexy at the expense of anything else, even wearing lingerie into battle or whatever.Honestly it's difficult to get a full grasp on what you're given without any form of context. In a lot of cases, otaku are definitely treated as if they're in their own world (usually not favorable) and in some cases, even take pot shots at them.
But I'm fearing this may be heading into a new territory all togetherm

I guess that's unfair, I know there's fujoshi too who have their own tastes with male characters, and with the butler and many of the males, I know they're getting catered to as well, but it seems they have overall less influences on most games and anime so there's less of a gut reaction in me with Joker (the butler) than with Felicia, with her high pitched voice and whatnot. I guess I'm biased.
He looks like he has the same body shape as default Kamui, but his face shape at the very least makes him look older. Iirc, Awakening made you have the same face shape as long as you were on that one body type.
They've shown the avatar creation screen so we know that there's a body type option again, but they haven't shown the body type options yet. I can see the options being less extreme here though, since Kamui has "older" and "younger" brothers in the story, leaving him with a more specific age range than Robin.
The My Castle stuff seems pretty interesting. I like that I can raise my own pet dragon if I choose to. From the most recent Famitsu, there are apparently freeze staves, so this could mean the return of status staves <3I hated that staff users in Awakening were basically healbots
While I prefer the Hoshido character designs to Nohr, Belka is probably my favorite design thus far followed by Kagerou.
Ah well that is definitely something. And the visuals leave me more hopeful. I have only seen the defaults up till now. Of which, I thought the female avatar looked a lot cooler.
Hmm, yeah I'm still a tad curious why they went with the body options they went with. Especially the Gregoir-esque one. Think most would want in the Gaius/Owain---Lon'qu/Chrom range (though I suppose you could argue the middle body is somewhat close to Gaius).
