Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

No in-game xmb, disappointing. I guess it will come with whatever update Home will be on. I hope the G.A.P. poll is indicative of them rolling it out soon.

I'm really glad they're bringing the information board though.

I really wanted to see in-game messaging but this update is rich and cool nevertheless.
It will be interesting to see if there are stealth things like BR Profile 1.1 and added rumble support (nearly a given considering it was present in 1.94 and games supporting rumble are coming out).

Oh yeah, now that I can turn ON the PS3 remotely I hope for my electric bills sake I can turn OFF the PS3 remotely as well, heh.

That was my point exactly. I feel this is a more than adequate update IMO.

it'll take a while before you know. Are there any 1.1 discs coming out this year?

I think Sunshine is the first Blu-ray that uses the stuff that's only in 1.1. That comes out early next year.

Nice pun, but the Press Release mentioned both :p.

Actually, turning it off should be considerably easier than turning it on implementation-wise; once you are connected to the system remotely they simply need to let you have a hook to the GameOS that shuts the console down just like you would using your SIXAXIS controller... waking the PS3 up remotely involves a bit more steps than that IMHO :).

some very nice features in this update. sony doesnt seem to put big features out in a predictable pattern (v1.8).

im pretty sure we will see the bd profile 1.1 or 2.0 update when the movies are available and in-game xmb looks like it will hit this spring (firmware 2.5?)

hopefully the information board is just like their blog where we can read stories, get content, and post messages. that would be very useful since not everyone knows about the blog or visits online.

Well... hm.

What ever happened to RSS feeds? The 1Up Show directly to my PS3, dammit!

So are there any devs that might know if there are architectural, under-the-hood changes?
There was talk of a smaller OS memory footprint and so on.

Anything?

CoD4 accesses your XMB friends list.

Maybe we'll never get 'XMB ingame'? Maybe we'll just have games having access to XMB elements and presenting them in a game context. So access to XMB friends list, alerting you to messages that come in etc.

A lot of games do, all the ones that actually matter anyway. People act like it's impossible to be notified when a friend wants you to join a game with them. You still receive a notification every time you receive a message in EVERY game, even when a friend logs on/off. If it's that important, you can quit out and read it for the games that don't support it. Yes it's inconvenient, but it's not like it's impossible, or even permanent for that matter.

What I do is if I want a friend to invite me into the game they are playing, or I want them to join my game, I put in the subject line "Join T5DR w/ me", "AIM me password", "Send Invite", etc., because it appears in the notification.

So the new PSN logo doen't replace the old Network one? It's been added alongisde it? What's in there precisely? PS Store and Account management stuff?

I'm even more intrigued by the Information Board.

sounds like a solution. Or just send them a text message (don't know why that was shot down earlier, thats what I do)

The Information Board is apparently linking to psn.ign.com I recognize that article with Kevin Rose from the page.

Me too. I was thinking it would be something that is always shown on the XMB screen showing announcements. Kind of like the ad space all over the 360 dashboard, except centralized and maybe including the ability to turn it off.

Also, playlists is a stepping stone towards custom soundtracks. Judging by the GAP poll, we at least know they're working on it.

I'm really interested in what changes they're making to the organization of the XMB. I think the network column as it's set up now is bloated.

EDIT: \/\/\/ Maybe that will unclutter the friends space on the XMB?

I hope they put up some neat themes on the Store tomorrow. Also, they better not charge for them. :\

not being able to 'skin' that new PSN logo will definitely annoy me. i already hate that my 'location fee player' logo is never in the same style as my psp theme :(

if they are giving the PSN its own icon, they must be planning on adding other network option down the line.

at first, i was think they would put home under there but we already saw home will home its own icon.

Looks good to me. I can't wait to take the browser for a test drive and see if it is improved at all.

I do assume that the BD-J 1.1 stuff is there, even if Sony isn't touting it.

They don't charge for wallpapers or PSP themes.

Also, I'd say this is hitting tonight at 11PM EST like all the other ones since they annouced in the European PR that it's going up on the 8th, which could very well mean late tonight in the US.

That new logo sure looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Anyway I expect 2.0 to be mostly internal changes. It would not surprise me if 2.0 was the bottleneck and once it's out that 2.01, 2.02, 2.1, 2.2 etc. will follow more rapidly than updates have been arriving lately.

you guys get that that's not how versioning goes, right? the previous version wasn't one and ninety four one hundredths. it was major version one, minor version ninety four. .06 doesn't turn that into 2.00, it turns it into 1.100.

This is what I also think. This changes a lot of the existing framework and probably allows them to build upon it faster.

You mean that one? If you take it out of context that sounds plausible but if you look at the rest of it, it's just listing features of the PSN. You can go to http://psn.ign.com and see a bunch of corresponding articles. While that would be VERY interesting if it turns out to be the way you say I think it's just listing features of PSN.

If you never expected in-game XMB to arrive with this firmware, like me, this update isn't that disappointing. HOPEFULLY custom folders is in there, since that is very much needed right now.

I like the logo.

About the version numbers:
I would guess that a 2.0 designation has a lot more to do with the underlying tech of the XMB getting updated rather than adding a lot of new features, especially considering it's only a .06 update. It should be really interesting to see how the SDK can change after consumers have 2.0.

People just have to remember that all the .01 updates have generally been bug fixes and any notable feature added has been signified by a .1 update.

You do realize that not everyone does versioning increments the same way, right? What you describe is one way. Some organizations do it differently, simply incrementing a standard decimal value sequentially. This is the way Sony has done it with the PSP and PS3 so far, at least in public.
