This one's gonna be interesting in that the reviews really won't be hitting until like, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Monday morning. By the time a critical consensus is achieved, opening weekend will have already come and gone.
It's almost the exact opposite of what Fox did with Apocalypse.
Huh? Reviews are already hitting. That's what this thread is about. There's already 11 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wait, really?Empire gives it 4 stars.

Did Apocalypse's critical thumping scare them off screening ID4-2, or was that decision made long before?
This movie is all about having fun with friends and family on a hot Summers evening.
Bring it on!!
You guys weren't actually expecting this to be good, were you?
These impressions seem about right.
Good in an Independence Day way yes
Which everything seems to point at that so far lol
But will it have a great speech in it, though?
DOUBTFUL
Doesn't matter about review scores for a summer blockbuster.

Umm then why are you in this thread?
That second link has an interesting scoring model. The rate it by "film" and "movie". "Film" is there rating about the artsy nature of the movie and "movie" is how much of a slam-bang epic, popcorn blockbuster movie it is. They gave ID:R a "Film" rating of 2/5, but a "Movie" rating of 5/5.
Also, does anyone find it weird they didn't wait another week to release it. Had they done so, they could've released it on Fourth of July weekend like the original movie did.
No such thing! It's a free Internet

http://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/independence-day-resurgence-review-1201800114/This scattershot but frequently spectacular sequel sees Roland Emmerich reclaiming his title as the DeMille of global destruction.
.
Goldblum and Pullman are still great. Hirsch was fun but his adventure didn't really connect much with the plot.
.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film 1/5 stars, describing it as a "planet-smashingly boring sci-fi sequel."

Robbie Collin of The Telegraph gave it 2/5 stars, saying it showing "no signs of intelligent life."

Just got back from this. As a HUGE fan of the first movie (it was my favourite movie as a kid), this felt incredibly "meh".
I'll have to see it again to fully form an opinion on it, but first impressions are not great.
Got the 20th anniversary on blu ray and watched it a few days ago, still fucking awesome now i can't wait to see this one. Roland Emmerich at what he does great.. blowing the whole world up.
Saw it today and was surprised to like it.
I guess "solid" is how I would describe it? Obviously it's a dumb blockbuster, but it was definitely closer to more thought out early examples of the genre than the loud and obnoxious likes of Transformers and 2012.
I dunno. I just couldn't hate it.

I'm sold.
Well, man, expectations were right next to the dinosaur bones after 2012.
