First look at New Super Mario Bros. WiiU?

That looks like shit compared to this:
600x-1

Or what about Wario Land?

I think both would be better suited than a Rayman Origins-like style.

Its like, pure bliss. This is what I imagined games to look like in the future when I was a kid.

Why is it retarded?

Well, first off, the NSMB style as a whole feels really plasticy is a whole. Would be nice if it looked more organic.

Secondly, the models look hardly any different. It almost literally doesn't look like they upped the poly count at all.

And a better color scheme wouldn't hurt either.

Sorry, I meant the mario glaxy2 style, you where disappointed that it looked the same, so the question, how would you have changed that? I personally thought it looks fine, and didn't want a new style. there where so much stuff they could have added to galaxy 1 so I was glad they did a new one and implemented a ton of new game play stuff. a difference in style would have made it a different game then a galaxy sequel.

Oh, you meant Galaxy 2? Actually, that's a much tougher one to tackle. I mean, the graphics themselves were absolutely fine, really the best on the system by any measure imo. I just thought it was way too similar.

Actually, in Galaxy's case, I probably would have been more satisfied if there was a change in venue and physics as opposed to the graphics, to be honest.

The Wii U NEEDS a 3D Mario just like Galaxy at launch.

Come on Nintendo...

Well, a mario game like this will be faar easier to make. So now they CAN have a super mario game at launch (it will probably be fun to play in online co-op, maybe with Mii's, god forbid). The more 3D amazing Mario come will come in the coming years.

Ahh fair point! I agree that it should have had more variety in its locations and gameplay concepts. Its a sequel but it indeed felt more as a galaxy 1.5 then a 2.

I apologize for the retarded comment, that was premature

Not trying, but more confused about its identity, and that it would be healthy for the NSMB series if it committed fully to be a more Rayman Origins style of game. That is as long as it were treated as its own separate branch of the Mario series, and we still got other main Mario game that can perform better as full proper precision platformers.

Holy fuck, no! NSMB is a series of precision platformers, just like all the previous 2D mario games. The engine, the perspective, the controls and the admittedly somewhat crude art style were clearly created with that in mind.

Does this mean that the games couldn't work with any other art style? Of course not. That canned 2D Kirby is an excellent example of a more pleasing, but still clean art style that could work for a precision platformer (even Braid went for visual clarity over clutter despite the beautiful painterly look). And I would have loved for Nintendo to have a bolder, more original creative vision for the series. But Rayman Origins? Are you kidding me? I mean, I kinda like the game, but it's so far from what I want Mario to be. There's no reason why the 2D Mario series should sacrifice visual clarity, precision controls and platforming for such an overly busy look, excessive visual gimmickry and imprecise physics and laggy controls.

so instead of pointing out that this game (if its not a prototype that is) might be the ONLY launch title that has full Nintendo Network (and miiverse) integration with possible online coop and continuous full worlds DLC, level maker that can be shared, possibly speed runs and tournaments between players, which would make it a true evolution for the SMB franchise...

people are arguing about the Artstyle ??

No harm done. :)

As long as the turtles don't dance in rhythm to the music, I'm okay with this.
But that's the best bit. A world without dancing is a world I don't want to live in.

How could anyone seriously be looking forward to this?
Because NSMBW was a good game so people are assuming this will be good (which is the opposite of how people felt when NSMBW was first announced ho ho ho)

I saw Metroid and Zelda icons too. Hopefully those weren't just cruel teases.
Well Animal Crossing was first shown in the early images of the Wii Message Board (it's even in the manual) and yet it took quite a few years for that game to be announced.

That fucking song better not be in this one though.

DO DODODO DO DODODODO HONK
I like the song now. Maybe after listening to it 2381 times it grew on me.

Doesn't look HD to me...maybe its the quality of the pics. We'll see...
A non HD steam doesn't look HD gee I wonder why...

They should go fucking bonkers with parallax scrolling Shadow of the Beast style baby
They should go crazy with the scrolling for the hell of it? Guess real life looks like a still photo to you.

Despite being a generation leap, it just looks like a baby step in the right direction.

Disappointing.
In some ways it good for Nintendo to show that it is ok to release non AAA budget games on the WiiU. Then again Nintendo is in the blessed position to do well of non AAA games.

Nintendo should really thing outside the box. How amazing would this be on Wii U?

Because you can't tell where the foreground and background is?

I'm tired of being able to predict every worlds theme every god damn time. Mario 3 and Mario World managed to mix it up way more than the NSMB games.
Probably why the Mountain Cliffs world was my favourite in NSMBW since it wasn't a typical world theme.

I had read that the next nsmb is intended to be a downloadable game for 3ds and wiiu at launch. Was that ever confirmed or was it just speculation?

I don't know about you, but I feel a lot more comfortable buying these kinds of games at cheaper dlc prices. That might also explain the "lazy" graphics people are complaining about (although I think it looks just fine)
NSMB3DS will be available as a downloadable title as well as retail. The price however won't be cheaper as a result so brick and mortar stores can still compete.

URgh looks like the same old shit. Try something new Nintendo. How about a new fucking every generation or something.
A new fucking? A fucking of what? The buttocks?

quick comparison, must stress Wii game is direct Feed from Dolphin, Ive reduced the size of both shots to try to level it out.

Holy smokes, they flipped the coin meters! NINTENDO DOES IT AGAIN!

Is it sad I noticed the slightly tilted pipe before the better looking trees in the background?
Nope. It was the one thing I wanted to mention. Surprised hardly anyone else pointed it out either.

The game isn't finished yet you guys
I know NSMBW showed some graphical improvement between announcement and launch but I wouldn't put too much hope in this department.

Wake me up when they make another real Mario platformer.
Going to need a lot of coffee for this guy.

If they made a 2D game that used the old art assets like this:
SMW_Forest_of_illusion_scene_art.PNG

I'd be highly satisfied.
That Wiggler is so tsundere.

Copying the most generic-looking Kirby game? No thanks
I don't even know what this word means anymore.

Plasticky.

The background is nice, and I'm digging the Mario World approach (I didn't like the disconnectedness of Mario Galaxy 2 and to a lesser extent NSMBWii), but the foreground basically looks exactly the same as Super Mario All-Stars, which appeared on the SNES almost 20 years old now. In fact, that game had sprites for characters and is thus more charming.

Basically, if this doesn't come boxed-in for free I don't want it.

(also though NSMBWii was total meh)

It may be packed in

And its 2d because it may have a level editor. Content sharing anyone ;) Perfect pack in just because of that.

Could you imagine recreating every Super Mario World level?

Or every Super Mario Land level?

The possibilities of a level editor on a 2d marios are nearly endless :)

Well they did talk about "transmiting game content they have created themselves which can then be added to other's gameplay". And DLC... Well Nintendo certainly will explore that area. Mario platformer could be the next step on that line.

EDIT: ^ That Kirby game is one of those three cancelled Kirby games they showed a while ago.

Yes! I love NSMB for the Wii. Had a blast playing it with my girlfriend. She sucks at the game, but somehow it was still an amazing time. Hopefully this is more of the same!

Really? I haven't played it single-player but I go through it with friends a lot and have a blast. Do you dislike it in single and multi? If so, why? I thought the level design was fantastic.

I tried to play it with my wife, but the difference in competence was way too high, which made it a pretty frustrating ideal for her as she was dead ninety percent of the time (and to a lesser extent for me as she was agitated and was keeping me back). As a single player experience I was annoyed by the floatyness of the controls (felt more like Sonic than Mario to me) and the overall lack of imagination. It was still a really decent game, but a far cry from the Galaxies.

Hmm I missed that. That would make it a lot more interesting, but it seems at odds to what SMB has historically been for nintendo, i.e. a higly polished, perfectly tweaked, pick up and play playground experience.

That's fair enough and an interesting point to raise. I play with people who are basically on a par with me skill-wise and it flows quite nicely.

One annoying thing is that when one player dies the game freezes for a second, which can totally screw up your timing.

A level creator isn't out of the question I think. If they are willing to compete with say LBP... would shoot up to one of my most anticipated list, if they ended up taking that direction with the series.

I'm definitly getting Super Mario World vides from the game, which is pretty cool. I hope nintendo makes a new 2D Zelda and Metroid as well, along side more hardcore 3D versions. This way they will keep everybody satisfied.

It's not offensively bland anymore, with the more watercolored and fuller backgrounds. But it still isn't a very beautiful game though. They should finish what they've started, and give the whole game a full make over.

Should have been New Super Mario World....

Still looks super fun.

Could still be! I don't think this game (if it actually exists and isn't a proof of concept) actually has a 100% confirmed name.

Anyway, it's a subtle change, but everything looks more improved and nicer. As a showcase for a truly "out there" artstyle it falls way short, but the main Mario titles really haven't been about pushing the art past a nice, clear, solid-looking platformer that everyone can approach. It would be awesome if they fully recreated Yoshi's Island style in 2.5D HD vision, but I guess we have the spinoff and lower tier franchises to scratch that art itch for us, and I'm okay with that!

The most important thing will be how fun it is. And they may have been overloading us with Mario platformers over the last 6 years, but by gum, each one has been more blissfully fun than the last and going from strength to strength, so this will hopefully continue that trend. If they get online multiplayer in as a choice alongside the riotous local co-op mode, this will be one hell of a launch game.

Well if they do include a level creator I hope they go for the straight forward approach and allow us to basically drag and drop things on the touch screen. No need for a fancy build while playing approach of LBP.

That fact that one of the mii's are talking about being a flying squirrel makes me think this could just be a wii u port of the upcoming New Super Mario Bros 2 on 3ds.

That could be amazing. I just wonder if Mario would be the game for Nintendo to jump in on user created content considering how consistently high their level design is in 2D Mario.

Edit: and 3D for that matter!

It's the most logical explanation given the poor graphics, and it would be strange releasing two different games of the New series in a matter of months, but we didn't see the P-Meter yesterday... Maybe it only appears if you're tanooki Mario.

Ahh, you have a point on the p meter not being there.
Sure is going to be interesting to find out exactly what game this is.

Well they cod take the WarioWare DIY approach and have a judging panel. NSMB is an ideal game for user made levels due to its simple grid based graphics.

Oh God it's NSMB -> NSMBW all over again!
