For Honor Open Beta Feb 9 - Feb 12

Guess that is definitely the thing. I do love the concept, though. I always think that these type of games have a great community the first month, but then quickly becomes filled with people who play nothing else.

This in turn makes the entire game filled with elite people, knowing every ins and outs. I highly doubt that, for someone like me who only plays 4 hours per week, this is something I can stay good at if I don't spend hours upon hours "learning"

EDIT: Shit. Double post.

I dunno man, I think it's possible to get good in a couple hours a week.

Unlike most fighting games, For Honor has a very low execution barrier. The combos are simple and the controls don't require a ton of muscle memory. It's 90% building good habits and knowing what to expect at the right time. I think that makes the time investment a lot simpler, and I say this as someone who spent multiple hours a week just doing combo drills on MvC3 when it first came out.

I haven't played in three weeks, but I picked up the game today and completely rolled everyone over I played against just because I remembered what to expect, etc. If you feel up to try 1v1s, they'll help a lot. Dominion is a bit chaotic for building good habits, but it can be done. Or you could try the 4v4 Deathmatch, which is a little less crazy but still team-based.

Also, as a side note, don't roll too much, it's not that good. Stick to the locked-on dodge unless you're dealing with charging raiders.

Man, Kensei are tough for me to beat. I primarily use Nobushi and it's hard to guard against quick but strong light attacks. (primarily because I usually end up looking to counter a heavy attack and just spam RT ll)

I will be interesting to see how the community development plays out. Will it be like most fighting games, where... basically what you described will happen? Will it be like chivalry/souls, with a small-medium community that is dedicated but somewhat elitist that slowly dwindles over time? Or will it be like RS:S, where the depth and constant free dlc will keep people coming back, eventually growing its community?

I suppose only time will tell.
Hit tab after bringing up the chat box.
Thanks, now I can finally trash talk

Was about to download the beta but I got shipping information that the actual game will arrive tomorrow. I will be playing the game before the reviewers

So uh... this open beta seems a little wonky, eh? First attempt to get into a game put me into one of those dead matches that were problematic at the start of the last beta. Second attempt took forever and a day to load at the 'faceoff screen,' and then completely locked up as soon as it transitioned to the actual match. :x

Ubi, pls, my only feedback is the same as the last beta: Let us remap the controller buttons in-game, without having to use external tools.

I don't care that much about button prompts matching my controls, I can adapt to that fairly easy, but navigating the menu using L3 because I remapped my L1 kind of sucks.

Which character is the fastest? The slowness to combat is killing the game (for me).

Still, the game runs awesome and the netcode is a bit better.

The assassins. It's kind of a toss-up between the Peacekeeper, Orochi, and Berserker.

Peacekeeper can dodge in and out the fastest, and has the most lunges.

Orochi has the fastest dodge attacks and neutrals.

Berserker has the fastest movement abilities in 4v4, and is built around the longest combos of fast attacks. So he feels more like a pressure/rushdown than the other two.

Seriously.

Shit goes down hill quick when you get outnumbered
Also I wish I can change controller buttons. I want to have the attack buttons on the face rather than the shoulder buttons. I keep doing guard break by accident.

Shameless bragging, I know, but I find the score system really funny in Elimination. It doesn't take a lot to have a higher score than everyone else combined, apparently. Good way to farm EXP if you're looking to level fast.

I love Souls combat but it's not deep, it's a super basic system that's good because it's executed well. There's nothing particularly intricate about it.

The Souls combat system is very deep, easily one of the deepest out there. It's a versatile, intuitive & balanced system that works & feels great in a range of situations. There's a lot of complex external variables & factors being handled behind the scenes which let it adapt so well. It takes a lot of hard work to make something so complex seem so simple, it's far from basic.

For Honor's system has some interesting melee ideas & great animation work, but it's very rigid. It shines in 1v1s against players but the combat vs AI armies is pathetic, the system falls apart & resorts to mashing 1 button to see a well made but quickly repetitive animation, no better than Ryse. I can't comment on fighting player groups because 9 out of 10 times the enemy team leaves.

The game wasn't ever meant to be about fighting waves of enemies, so that part being shallow is expected. The hordes of enemies are there just to keep a point in flux, and not as an actual threat.

Oh man I feel like as much as im enjoying this I should shy away in case it gives me arthritis haha.

Hammering rb on xbox is killing my index finger

Theres no option to change control scheme either on console at least :/

Maybe not, but it's still a feature added into the game that occurs pretty frequently in dominion, & also single player judging by the footage. They could have pulled them, replaced them, or improved the combat mechanics in this area.

To be honest though I don't mind them that much despite the criticism, I was defending the Souls system more than arguing against the hordes.

Is this 95% multiplayer?

I love the look and dig the game to a certain extent, but I can see it being very very frustrating for me if it's all multiplayer.

This game would be so cool if it was a massive single player experience with co op and multiplayer as an add on. For me, it seems if I wanted my multiplayer fix, this would not be it.

Yeah, multiplayer is definitely the main draw. If it didn't grab you, I don't think the single player mode will do anything for you.

I don't even plan on playing the single player, unless GAF says it's good.

I mostly only doing the campaign because you get unique helmet ornaments for each difficulty.

It's online-only and there's a campaign (that requires Internet).

What a great game

also parries are hard, I have to defend the correct side and dash when the enemy is attacking - sounds hard right now

I'm home and able to spar anyone who wanted to! Buttzerker on PC, once more.

Aww bad timing, I just finished and need to sleep. I'm exhausted x_x

You're getting parries and deflections mixed up.

There's 3 main ways to guard against an attack:

Block - Just match the position of your opponents swing
Parry - Match the position of your opponent's swing and hit heavy attack at the right time.
Deflection - Dodge into the direction of your opponent's swing at the right time, don't have match their position. (assassin class only)

This is the best thing Ubisoft has ever done.

What does the deluxe version have extras-wise? I can't seem to get a clear answer on that from product pages. They're vague.

For PC folks what's the best, controller or mouse keyboard? I keep messing up my blocks with the mouse wondering if I should get a controller to play with.

I'm definitely enjoying playing the game, except for when I'm placed into in-progress matches and we're already down a few rounds. They almost always instantly end within another minute and it's just not fun.

I think just a couple ornaments, 7 day champ status, emblems and a special emote.

I honestly think the deluxe is not worth it; if i were to get one of the expensive editions, it'd be the gold due to season pass.

Mouse definitely takes some getting used to. Blocking is so much more intuitive and crisp with a thumbstick. But the vanilla gamepad layout is such that you can't manage your block while simultaneously covering your break, dodge, and cancel commands.

I think a paddle controller would be the best control option for this game, but if you don't have one, stick with MKB. It gets better once you get some muscle memory going.

I'm not sure if it was added for this beta, but I noticed that R3 while locked-on is guard break. That should cover that issue without clawing the controller.

None of the expensive editions are worthy it, to be honest. But I went with the Gold one because I got a great pre-order deal on it (~$50).

Doesn't seem to work for me. At least in practice mode with a DS4, R3 acts as target cycle. :(

Though talking about controller stuff, I wonder if DS4Windows would be a good alternative to make a custom layout. Never really used it for anything beyond DirectInput -> Xinput conversion.

These bots don't mess around I just watched a dude get buried by one lmao

Some of my favorite moments are being abandoned in 2v2 Brawl when I solo and my bot wrecking shit up.

Of course the flipside of that coin is when it decides to interrupt my 1v1 and just gives the other player revenge. Grrrrr.
