Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

Playing with frame smoothing on or off? With it on I perceive that jello-like effect at times. Same specs as you.

Actually i perceived it regardless. With framerate smoothing on it seemed to be a bit less.
I can see some people calling this smooth tho but I know what flawless framepacing looks like and that was definitely not the case.

By the way: Is it possible to lock the frame rate with RTSS?

Yes it is. As I stated in the patch thread already, I tried locking the framerate to various numbers.
Unlocked I do get 100+ fps.
If I lock it to 90 it jumps around between 85-90
If I lock it to 80 it jumps around between 75-80
If I lock it to 60 it jumps around between 55-60

Very weird behavior. I do not have this with any other game. It is the only UWP game I tried recently tho.

Well, my PC with an old i5 2500K and a GTX 980Ti saw a nice boost in performance with this patch, but my other PC with a 7700K and a GTX 1080 actually performed worse. I'm going to try reinstalling the game to see if that helps. Maybe something got messed up during the patching/DLC installing processes.

It's of course not always at >95%, but I'm also not playing with unlocked fps.
I repeated the test (same settings, resolution, race, just a different car and no recording)
GPU load (% GPU Auslastung in the Afterburner graph) is definitely high during complex scenes. I captured a moment when fps droped down to 55. As you can see; GPU load is maxed out and cpu load seems to be rather low (~55% total load). This is still on the down clocked 7700k (4.3ghz) btw.

For comparison: Same scene from my video. FPS are even lower here, probably because of Geforce experience recording. GPU is running at the same oc and the 7700k is at 4.8GHz

that screens clears it up. i meant gpu usage during the drops. good to know

Gaming Laptop

GTX1070 + 6700HQ, 16GB RAM

minimum 57fps
mostly 61-73fps

All on Ultra (no dynamic scaling), 4K (no MSAA)

o_o

Cant seem to get it starting after new dlc and patch.
Worked fine before now it hangs on the loading screen. To be more specific it just keeps on loading...
Doesnt freeze or something it just doesnt load the game...
Already tried the ressetting apps data. Also installed new amd driver. And my pc ia up to date with Windows patches....

Edit nevermind after 15min it finally loaded.. wtf..

Thanks. I'm seeing varying frame times even with the in game lock in place. Was hoping for a solution.

Still getting hitching. With Vsync on, ingame fps counter stays at 60 but RTSS overlay keeps going from 58 to 62. Vsync off gets me anywhere between 90 and 120 fps. It's better than it was, but still annoying.

Guess you need Gsync or Freesync to really get this game to play smoothly...

6700k stock, GTX 1080, 16Gb @ 3000, SSD. Playing at 1440p.

Nope. I do have Gsync 144hz and as you can see in my post above, I still get micro stuttering / drops when locked or unlocked.

try forcing vsync off, then turning it on in-game and use that as an fps limiter. works for me

Completely removed the BM expansion, re-downloaded it, still can't travel there, from either Hot Wheels or the Airport. 5+ minutes of loading, then a crash.

What's your gamertag please?

If others are seeing this exact same issue can you also please let me know your gamertag.

Took me five seconds to update the camera app... Really weird that people are having these problems.

Yea, I don't understand it. Unless people have some software blocking Winstore from using certain speeds, I never had issues with long downloads and I run all the beta builds. Always sad to see.

Wow. I can actually get a taste of 60fps with everything maxed out on my 2600K now. There are slight dips and it'll probably get worse in other areas, but this patch is truly a revelation compared to how it was before.

The more i play the more im impressed, dont remember when ever a patch improved the performance so much that render an unplayable game (because of microstuter) to an almost perfect experience.

Please give kudos to all the PG team, many teams would already abandon the game since its already 8 months old.

The performance vs visual ratio is out of this world now! 4K 60fps with this type of visuals is an amazing feat!

Just deleted the whole game and redownloaded it.
It waw taking forever to load the game. But also when i changed msaa srttings it took 4 min to change..
And after that i didnt see a single fps boost but did see a lot more aliasing...
Went from 8xmsaa to 4xmsaa.
My pc:
Xeon x5670@4.42ghz 6 cores 12 threads.
Sapphire rx480 4gb @1400mhz
12gb ram @ 1771mhz.

Before i could run uktra 8xmsaa on 1200p around 40-60 fps.
Now its always 40.
Plus my cpu is doing nothing...
Could not test other settings because it took forever to change them..
Hoping this reinstall helps but the savedata sync is incredibly slow already....

1080 Ti + i7 6700K OC'd

1440p, ultra/max everything, 2x or 4x MSAA (I don't remember). Gsync monitor.

Huge improvement with the patch, but frame stutter is still present. It's significantly reduced, but I'm not going to lie; driving through places like the sunshine coast definitely replicates decently frequent microstutter on asset loading or CPU bottlenecking, usually after small stretches of driving or when turning a corner.

It's worse when I play unlocked. I can't lock at 60fps, only weird variations. Max is 72. Playing locked 72fps it doesn't drop, but yeah; still stutter if significantly reduced.

It's more playable in any respect. Funnily enough, I get similar frame stutter in The Witcher 3 but only on certain occasions. Makes me wonder if it's just some Windows quirk, something going on in the background that sometimes fucks with games and their CPU/RAM usage.

Forgot specs:

6700k stock
16go ddr4
1080 stock

I have similar specs but slightly overclocked 6700k and 1080, driving a 3440x1440 monitor so less pixels. Should be safely and solidly 60fps then? Might even be able to turn on a dab of MSAA

When following the tram route through Paradise City the game would regularly drop down to ~45fps before. Now the lowest I saw it drop to was 75fps. This is with Max settings at 1080p with 4xMSAA. Oddly when leaving the outback festival site I ran into a massive hiccup where the framerate dropped massively for a second. The same thing happened when I left Paradise City. However other than these two hiccups, the game ran much better with no stutter at all.

Running on a 6700k stock, 1070 OC to 2100 Mhz, and 16GB of memory.

Kudos to PG for the great update. I'm sure these issues are not easy at all to iron out considering the randomness of the open world and using a new lower level IP.

I can go for 3200x1800/60/ultra/2x msaa on my overclocked 1080.

Guessing you're playing on a 144Hz monitor? I think if you force the refresh rate to 120Hz, it would allow you to select 60fps in the game. Though I'm not sure if that would make the stuttering worse for you.

Wait, are you telling me that after all this time, FH3 *still* has a problem with SSDs? Seriously?

Apparently, furthermore I'm still unable to actually get in the game. Might have to to redownload the game this night when downloading doesn't count for my data limit.

I haven't had any problems with the Windows store or any games until last night...

I haven't had chance to see if anything works yet because the downloads were so insanely slow, I was getting failed downloads and errors.

I left my PC on I overnight so I will check when I get home from work.

I'll chime in here.

CPU: i5 2500K @ 4.3GHz
8GB RAM
Graphics: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW Edition

First testing for CTDs with Dynamic Optimisation set to medium, vsync @ 30fps. Glad to report no CTDs, there was one point in Byron Bay where I had a severe drop (seemed like the game just froze for about a second. After that, was very solid.

Upped the vsync to 60fps and rocked on down to Surfers Paradise, was a fairly consistent 60fps but in some areas dipping down to 57fps. Again had 1 severe drop where it seemed like the game froze up for a second. No CTDs though.

Will continue further testing tonight and see how much I can push it.

I consider this a really good patch and a great effort from the devs, especially considering that before the patch I would get regular CTDs and pretty much resigned to play on the XB1.

Would like to thank Helios, Playground / T10 for the good work on this. Of course, any further optimisation improvements you can offer on this game, not only better for us, but better for the Devs for future PC titles in the Forza franchise,

When I set the game to 60fps I get single frame drops to 59, which causes hitches. If I unlock the framerate it hovers around 85 frames in that same area.

Not sure if my i7 3770 is the bottleneck here.

Sigh, I bought the Hot Wheels DLC because I was finally enjoying my time with the game and now it just crashes whenever I press continue on the main menu. :(

Edit: Resetting the app in the Windows settings seems to have fixed that crash.

Any way to force this game to run at 60hz? Got a 75hz monitor and I would have a much smoother experience otherwise. There are rare dips to 71 on my preferred settings (Maxed, 1440p)

After a quick testing session, the overall framerate/stutter issue downtown is basically gone, but there's still occational blips. Not enough to cause an issue, and we're into "normal" nitpick territory. It registers as running at 60 basically the whole time. Otherwise, the performance is singing. This was a big improvement for me, and my issues weren't that dramatic in the first place.

Wait, are you telling me that after all this time, FH3 *still* has a problem with SSDs? Seriously?

I've only ever played it on my SSD, with no issue.

Well the really fixed the game.

Everytime i would leave the garage I would get dips and dips throughout.

Now perfect solid 60fps. Probably some small dips in chaotic scenes but not noticable at all.

1440p
I5-2500k @4.1

8GB RAM (old ass)

Are you on an AMD video card? Any drivers newer than 17.2.1 break the game in various ways.

Are people seeing improvements in places where they were gpu bound? (wet roads/dense forests etc.) Re-running some tests people did on 'Rainforest Escape' would be great. For some bizarre reason I've never been CPU bound in this game at 60fps, so I'm not expecting CPU improvements to make much difference.

Is it possible to clear app data, run the game in offline mode, start a new save and then force it to ignore the cloud sync on next start up? I want to start from scratch.

Yes I did 'Rainforest Escape' and a few other demanding races. Before the patch it was 35-60fps and now it's 60fps at all times. Very happy with this.

To answer your second questions, yes, that should be possible. After you do that and connect back online, game should ask if you want to use your old cloud save or keep using your newly created save file.

Excellent, thanks.

The new beta version of RTSS works w/ UWP apps now.

Do you have Blizzard Mountain? I had to uninstall that in the same place you reset. Something about having both expansions is causing issues.

I don't. I reinstalled the game yesterday after not having played it for quite a few months. Back then it was working just fine, though the performance was a bit wonky.

So when I heard they did some good stuff with the performance I decided to give it another bash.

And then, nothing but frustration.

Or, you know, they could have gotten it right at release. Fixed it one month, two months....not 8 months later. It also still has issues.

While i do agree what you are saying about being right at release how many games that were not fixed even many months after release? Whats done was done, cant change the fact of a broken release but they could (and done it) fixed it.

Why shouldnt i be gratefull about that? Its certantly a leason learned for PG and the game is finally fixed for the majority of the people.
