Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

Man I know it's only really been going on two days, but the lack of communication regarding the poor performance is disheartening. Atleast an acknowledgement of the stuttering and crashing that players are having coupled with a "we're working on it" would be nice.

This game is so damn good, I do hope the issues can be patched out.

Kotaku posting articles w/ "game runs fine" isn't helping the situation at all.

I don't think there is a way to do proper DSR/VSR downsampling in UWP apps due to them being only borderless windowed. If you are lucky you will get the option to select one of your DSR/VSR resolutions but it will scale it down and look worse than native 1080p.

Horizon 3 has built in DSR capability, if you have DSR factors enabled the additional resolutions will show up in the menu, I'm playing with 1620p downsampled and looks absolutely great.

The problem with downsampling in these games is that if you have dynamic rendering turned on, you don't really know if the res bump is detrimentally dropping your settings. A good idea is to turn off dynamic, check your framerates and then re-enable dynamic.

So help me out here;

What do I need to do to run at 60fps on a 970gtx and 4690k?

It should be doable at 1080P right.

I don't know if it's possible at absolute smoothness. 36fps at high is a 100% pure lock for me with a similar system, 48fps at medium had occasional but noticeable drops. Weirdly the performance at high and medium was similar, I just don't think certain aspects of the game allow for nice scaling in framerate unfortunately.

Sorry this is a dumb question but does anyone know the name of the folder this game is located in? I can't locate this game my nvidia control panel, or locate the game folder at all. It's downloaded, was playing it and I'm trying enable "prefer max performance" but I can't find the game.

No way, medium can't reach 48? I guess I'll pass this then or just play it on xbox one where I won't be tempted by settings. My god. Even battlefield 1 is perfectly playable at 60+ on ultra.

You should see it in the dropdown menu, you don't need to add it manually.

Set GPU power to maximum performance and try 1080p, dynamic optimization on, high preset, I'm getting 50-60fps at high with a 960, there is no reason for a 970 to not lock it at 60fps outside the obviously troublesome areas.

Oh, that's nice to know. Can't play the game yet so I was speaking in general. Atleast I don't have any DSR resolutions in QB.

That sounds better. I have a Gsync display, so those drops won't mean much to me. I do think that I'm going to wait until the game releases Tuesday though and then see how things are in this thread.

From someone on a Eurogamer thread, not sure if it does anything, can't try myself as got the regular version

"If you have stutter on the Forza PC games then one solution may be to turn off the integrated game DVR in Win 10. Go to the Xbox app, go to settings, and turn the Game DVR slider off "

Purely anecdotal but the game runs really well for me when I actually manage to launch it. My setup right now is:

970
I7 4790k
16gb RAM
Running off an SSD

That's giving me pretty much constant 60fps on mostly high settings at 1080p.

Are keys for Windows Store games sold on any storefront (GMG, humble bundle, etc.)? Or is the only way to buy this through the actual windows store?

Gamedvr is very usefull tho for making screenshots. I believe if you upload them to the forza site it resizes them tot 1920 x1080. Gamedvr is fine i believe.

Just so you guys know, since it's slightly quicker than using the GameDVR stuff, you can just press WinKey+PrintScr to take a screenshot of the game. You'll see the screen dim slightly to let you know it worked.

Yeah it should do. There's a couple of those sites than you can view your clips/screens on.

Yeah i know. I was just curious of it took screens from the PC also. :)

Yes, here is a screenshot I took of H5: Forge in 1440p. When I download it off GameDVR, it's indeed a 1440p PNG. Very cool.

Cool cool. Good site as always indeed to download quic your screens. Xbox people know that. Doubt many pc people know it. Cool that it works for both. :)

Well, it's apparent to me now more than ever UWP is absolute trash. I was worried about another Quantum Break situation, and we have it here again. I can't maintain 60fps at all, even on Medium and High presets, even at lower resolutions. The game hitches when driving into terrain, or making contact with other cars, it's just a jittery mess.

Yes, it's nice to get both versions with Play Anywhere. But I'm also realizing that if you're on PC, it feels like we're settling for higher res, 30fps straight ports with very poor optimization.

Will I play at 4K/30 ? Yeah it's a beautiful game, and I love the Horizon series. But 30 on PC feels like I'm controlling a car driving through molasses, and much like Quantum Break, I figure I'll spend most of my time on console because it feels like they optimized the gameplay experience around the 30fps lock.

If I click on the VIP tab, it crashes. Sometimes it doesn't make it past the intro screen. If anyone has a good list of settings to maintain 60fps, I'd love to try them out.

Hmm disabling the network connection just cause FH3 not to start or just quits the game when you disable the connection mid game

Ive tried the reset and going into the folder and deleting. Forza crashes if you don't have the internet connected and it downloads the cloud save even if I hurry up and click on cancel. This is such bullshit man I wanted to show my father and cousin the opening movie and have them play the beginning. Was start new game really too much to ask for at the title screen? What reason could they possibly have for not including that?

I think the game runs totally fine, even in the city area (surfer's paradise) still couldn't notice any major loss in fps and never noticed studdering.

worst it got was a nightime rainy race on the beach with sand and rain particle effects; i saw it drop to around 30fps maybe a little less but it was brief

enabled maximum performance and dynamic optimization set to high

Forgive me, I'm new to PCs, but can I run this well with my current set up?

EVGA GeForce(R) GTX 1070 Superclocked ACX 3.0 Edition 8GB GDDR5

What I found works is, delete local save, boot game, when at title screen BEFORE pressing start, dc your network (this didn't crash the game for me), now press start, game will load a new save, once in game, pause, exit to desktop. Reenable network.

Yeh theres definitely a limiting issue when it comes to achieving higher framerate at 100% consistency. At medium you can probably hit 60+ fps 95% of the time but any frame drops or stutter from uneven pacing is an instant no go for me in a racing game.

This is some funny beahivour:

When I play the game, it currently caps at 20fps, don't ask me why.
As soon as I open the Xbox overlay (you can't see it in the video) my fps get up to the capped 30 fps.
As soon as I close the Xbox overlay it drops back to 20.

Look at the video, you can clearly see it.

My PC is an
i5 6600k
16 GB Ddr 4 Ram
GRX 970 OC
Installed on an SSD

How's it running on 2500k @ 4.4 and 980?

hello there, if I got:
E3 1231v3
GTX760 2GB
16GB RAM
Intel 530 SSD 240G

can I run this game well?

Guys I think right now performance seems to be all over the place on a variety of hardware. I don't know if this is the perfect time to jump in if you don't absolutely need to play this right now. Maybe wait till things settle down a little.

Hoping I can just brute force this game to maintain 60 or as close to 60 as possible at 4K. Really don't want to have to bump it down to 1440.

Cinematic racing evolved.

This isn't a good sign for me. I was hoping to play Gears 4 on my PC at launch. XB1 version is looking more and more likely.

When switching between the Xbox and PC version they feel the same to me as long as I set it to 30 FPS with vsync off and smoothing on. That's how I've been playing for the last bit.

If you have an i7, try disabling Hyper Threading, it helped my i7 5930K @4.6GHz get 60 FPS most of the time in Surfers Paradise, with HT I had 45.

Thank you for that tip, the difference is huge! Outside the city stable 60fps and in the city between 55 and 60. I can live with that for the moment ;)

Umm, don't you get both with the Xbone version? So you're saying because it runs weird on someone elses computer you couldn't be bothered to just download the game on your PC and give it a shot? Ok?

Are you ignoring the other people that have no issues or do you play on the same PC as the guy you quoted? Strange thing to say.

Fraid not, how can you not get into your BIOS?

I just disabled Hyper-threading and can confirm it makes a big difference. Now getting 75+ frames in the city with a 4790k and 980ti on 1440p Ultra. Good stuff. FIX YOUR VIP PG.

I'm constantly crashing whenever I go into the garage now, ugh.

WHy do photomode pictures in Forza look so blurry compared to those taken by people on console?

Seems to be running at a lower resolution in photo mode on PC. Not entirely sure, but it looks like it.

Another thing. There is hardly any difference in FPS when in 1440p or 4K.

I get 72 at 4k and in the same scene sitting there I only get 75 FPS @ 1440p

Is there an exclusive fullscreen option for this game?

I'm running a:

Titan X (Pascal)
X99 i7 6850K 6-core
64 GB of DDR4

I should be able to destroy this game at 1440p. Especially if I'm gett 70-80 fps @ 4K.

PC boots too quickly :p
also using the bios is kinda annoying lol

Turn your PC off, then hold down the power button until it turns on then off again. Press it again and it should do a longer boot for you to press the button to get into your BIOS. Atleast, thats how it works with me and my Gigabyte mobo.

I have a similar setup, but not nearly the same performance you're describing. Would you mind posting a 2-3 minute clip of you driving around a variety of environments with the fps counter on?
