Forza Motorsport 6: Apex open beta arrives May 5 on Windows 10, system reqs revealed

Dunno if it's already been reported, but for me it seems like a driver crash is almost always caused by focusing the camera in photo mode.

I know T10 are aware of the crashes, but not sure if anyone has noticed when/why they happen yet. Free cam in photomode is fine, gameplay is fine, but it crashes at random when I focus on a car. I can't remember if it happens to my own car or just AI. If it is AI it might be something related to the models/reflections shifting when you focus on an AI car.

I really like this game.

i7 3770k @ 4.4
7970 GHz 3GB
16 GB RAM

Some setting change to dynamic - mainly the reflection ones and other heavy GPU mem eaters.
Using DXtory for the first time to check the framerino, since RiveTuner can't seem to hook

After comparing DX11 single/multi thread, DX12 and Mantle in 3D Mark benchark I must say that I am pretty impressed by both DX12 which was new to me and Mantle, but that I've tried before.

I just downloaded an update to this. There is now an option in the video menu to set the performance target to either 30/60fps with or without vsync, so I assume Freesync/G-Sync now work.

Just noticed in the latest update that the hidden option for "Max Drivatars" on the video section is gone. Without being able to adjust this it means we can't have more than 16 cars on track in free play.

Trying to play this udpate and the game will hang on loading spa, all visuals are set to dynamic apart from framerate which is set to the new 60fps (vsync) option.

music is still playing but the game has froze on the track loading screen for over 2 minutes now.

Just tried for the first time, seemed like with the update. Wow this game runs like a dream for me. Some settings I have forced, other than that utlra dynamic. Impressive showing I have to say. Also it somehow tingled my Forza itch none of the Motorsport games could on the One so far... no idea why.

Update release notes : http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/turn10_postsm501885_posts.aspx

Today we released the first content update (CU) for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. This CU includes a number of improvements to the game, including the following:

  • Players can now disable Vsync in Apex (NOTE: This feature requires upgrading to a specific version of Windows 10 [OS Build 10586.318]). To disable Vsync:
  1. Ensure you are on the correct Windows Build 10586.318
  2. Select your desired performance from the Performance Target screen:

  3. Ensure you application matches your screen resolution settings. The easiest way to do this is set the “Force Resolution” video option to OFF, which will automatically match your game resolution to your native resolution.

  4. Ensure your application is running in a full screen mode (no borders / task tray). You can toggle full screen mode by pressing the Alt + Enter keys.

[NOTE: As of this update, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is still capped at a maximum frame rate of 60fps. The team is investigating adding support for higher framerates in a future update.]

Other changes in this CU include:

  • Stability and performance updates spanning a number of machine configurations, with specific focus on AMD devices
  • Gameplay/objective modifications to a handful of events in both the Showcase Tour and Spotlight Series
  • Improved integration between Apex and Forza Hub, as well as improved redemption flow for the free Nissan GT-R bonus car
  • Additional UI fixes and general improvements, including: Expiration times for Spotlight Series events are now shown in local time; "New” UI designation now only applies to events that are actually new; Total medals available in Spotlight Series now only counts for active events

I'm enjoying Forza, but Project CARS seems to have the better AI and better looking damage and more detailed car models. These suckers straight up run into walls and purposely ram the shit out of you. Aren't there any penalties in this game?

That note about being capped to 60FPS isn't quite true. The game runs at 72FPS (half VSync) on a 144Hz monitor. I've verified the same with DXTory. The game doesn't run sped up or anything so it seems the game is already tied to time instead of framerate, I wonder what's holding them back from just adding it.

Turn Drivatar aggression off, it really does work.

They should reword that to "murderous intent" instead of "aggression"

I have free 30GB on my C:/ drive and over 300GB free on the disc I'm trying to install the game to. But the Windows store keeps telling me that there's not enough free space...

First experience with the Win 10 store is very negative so far.

Its fine now!

I can't say for sure that stutter is improved or not but I do know that watching a replay is really choppy.

I did have one several second pause mid-race which was not visible in the replay, like it was loading data the first pass.

I hope they reduced the high RAM usage.

6GB here, will report back.

With everything maxed I peaked at close to 12 GB of ram usage LOL....

On another note, please set Limit Drivatar Aggression to ON. Although it does not fix the runaway 1st place AI, racers now behave like human beings and not like the GAF Forza Racing League

Only today I found about the beta. Will check out. I haven't played a good racing game in forever.

Started the big race on Rio and it was smooth, I did a restart on lap 2 and it became a choppy mess.

I know it's a beta but I can't really play this until they get on top of that issue.

Hah, after the update, I think I'm getting suddenly 3-second-long 0 FPS once per race instead of the persistent stutter. Still have to iron out the performance consistency issues after running the game for a while, I guess. Maybe in another patch?

Has anyone been able to actually make G-Sync work? I even added it to the driver and enable G-Sync there, still nothing. Tried both native res, and full 5K DSR.. nothing.. Have both updates for win 10 and forza.

I thought that was just my machine. Thank goodness I kept the rewind option on.

For anyone experiencing severe tearing on mobile GPUs with hybrid graphics (Optimus, for example): I think you can reduce the worst of it by either using a resolution that isn't your laptop's native resolution, or use the Low preset. The tearing shouldn't be that noticeable then, though there's still some mild tearing.

Used to get tons of crashing in this when running my GPU overclocked(GTX 980 Ti), the game doesn't need the overclock so I disabled that and the game runs great for me now.

I had this on day one several times, it stopped happening after I disabled all the dynamic settings though.

But I haven't played since the patch.

I just feel occasionally limited by the i5-4590 I have in my desktop. Seriously considering a 4690K, 4790, or 4790K at the moment - this is one of these games that manages to 100% my CPU.

Yeah, I'm CPU-limited in this game of all things...

Holy hell, are weather effects supposed to tank performance this extremely? I play maxed on 1440p on my 980ti flawlessly normally, but when I run a rainy course I swear it drops to sub 30 sometimes.

Why is it strange to be CPU limited in a CPU heavy game/genre?

weather effects are 30fps unless you set one of the visual options to ultra, I forget which one. could also be 16+ cars kicking up transparent particles causing it too.

I think that's the particule effects at full resolution, I get framedrops when I look back when it's raining and when many cars are splashing water.

That's not exactly how it works, weather effects run at 60 FPS, but not on the windshield where it can be at 30 with specific settings (like mirrors), or 60 in Ultra.

New update is great, game won't boot anymore as apparently I don't have a DX12 card in my system (980TI). I need to google for user help to be able to start the game, MS doesn't care to give me an answer how to start the game.

All my settings are removed, oh yeah! Also apparently you (or I) can't quit the test drive mode without crashing the game :).

Is anyone using a Xbox 360 Wireless controller on the PC with this game, but instead with one of those cheaper knock-off wireless dongles? Forza just doesn't want to recognize my controller, although it works fine in 99% of all my other PC games.

Also, how do I create an .exe shortcut for this game that I can add to Steam?

This game is great. Have T10 talked at all about the content support plan in the future; I.e. adding in new tours, cars/tracks, perhaps modes to better eventually reach parity with FM6 etc?
