Future Shop Canada stores now closed

Oh, wow. Going to Future Shop was part of my amiibo stock/deal-checking routine. It's a shame. Hopefully the Sainte-Catherine (downtown) store will become a Best Buy.

Twitter has a bunch of photos of stores all covered up with signs mentioning the closure.

They seem to all be in Quebec as far as I can tell.

Edit: One photo for a store in London Ontario.

Aww man that sucks. Still, it's not as if Best Buy didn't offer the EXACT same deals/offers. Gonna miss the less heavily trafficked website though.

Huh... Security guard at the hotel I work at had to leave early this morning because his wife (a Future Shop employee) had an early morning meeting.

Guess I know what that's about.

Best Buy didn't have as many appliances, but I usually preferred going to Best Buy because you don't get harassed by sales people as bad.

Apparently a friends friend that works at Futureshop got laid off this morning. In Toronto.

Yeah, RIP Future Shop

A lot of people potentially losing their jobs today.

And this on the heels of Target employees losing their jobs.

I hope Best Buy chooses to convert the majority of stores and this is more about a brand switch than cutting retail locations.

They'll probably turn into a Canadian Tire/Dollarama/Rona/etc

Most areas that have a FutureShop that I've seen already have all of these stores nearby, not to mention Targets that are closing. The FutureShop in my picture is up the street from a massive Canadian Tire and Rona, near a Dollarama and a closing Target, close to a Walmart, etc.

Hopefully they just demolish the store and build something nicer. All the big box massive parking lot stores in that area make it really gross.

Sooooo is Canada going to have no stores except Walmarts and Canadian Tires soon?

Never seen such a string of total shutdowns in my life.

My buddy works at the Yonge and Eg location and apparently that's moving over to a BB. Not a huge surprise but I'm really relieved to hear it all the same.

Wow, harsh. Got some preorders left too.

And you know there won't be any good closing sales 'cause most stores are just being converted.

That's the one close to my work. Glad that is sticking around.

Did your friend mention how fast the brand switch will be?

aww man, that sucks, especially for people working there,

Had one so close to me as well.

The site is still up and taking preorders for games coming out later in the year though, and since it's all pretty much bestbuy anyways, even the warehouses they ship from, I do hope they honor those preorders.

Woah, what the actual FUCK!

I live literally 2 minutes from one.

Man what is happening in Canada? Red box leaves, targets shut down, Futureshop dies.

I remember a few weeks ago someone posted that Future Shop was getting out of selling games. I noticed that the stores were getting less game stock in as well. I guess this is what was really happening.

Wtf, the one in south Edmonton better be open today. I have a n3ds I ordered online with 4 dead pixels I need to return.

I'm not surprised they're switching over to best buy though. Both stores have been owned by the same people for a long time. I was wondering why bestbuys customer service was responding when I emailed futureshop a few weeks ago. I guess this explains it.

I am hoping when Best Buy bothers to put an official release out they will mention the fact that they are honouring returns at their Best Buy stores.

future shop E3 preorders are the only reason I buy games day one anymore. I only have Xenoblade and Zelda U still preordered but it'd be nice if I could keep those somehow.

but yeah even though they are the same as best buy I always went out of my way to go to future shop. I'm just so used to the one at my hometown being there it'll be weird to see it gone. That said I was used to the old kmart, then the zellers that took it over, and they demolished that building for a Target in late 2013...sigh

WTF..talk about sudden. Although I always had the sneaking suspicion it would happen ever since BestBuy came into the picture. Welp..there goes another Canadian business swallowed up by its American counterpart. :(

Looks like my coin flip paid off.

Really shitty news but I guess you could see it coming. Two exact same stores with the exact same prices wasn't going to stick around forever.

I have preorders at both, but at FS I have the big 3 preordered: MGS5, FF15 and KH3. Im just concerned about MGS5.

There was really no need to have both Futureshop and Best Buy. Wherever there's one the other is down the street and they're the exact same store.

This is what I never really understood. Best Buy bought them out back in 2001, but kept the name and branding the same. They stocked the same products, at the same prices, and were almost always located within sight of each other. Really there wasn't much need to keep Future Shop open other than the illusion of competition, and name recognition. They probably realized now that name recognition doesn't mean much anymore, there's no sense in keeping up the illusion of two separate stores.

One place I know it did hurt is my hometown, as there was only a Future Shop, no Best Buy. That's getting closed too. It might end up "reopening" as Best Buy at some point, but I'll have to wait and see.

WTF. Every big shopping plaza where I live has both a Future Shop and a Best Buy across the street from each other. Future Shop always has better stuff. Not happy about this.

This isn't the case in Toronto. Future shops and Best Buys are a pretty good distance from each other save for a few. If the Future Shop near me closes the next closest Best Buy is about 30 minutes away in the downtown core.

I really hope they collapse the FutureShop.ca and BestBuy.ca backends together. They're pretty much identical anyways (you can swap most products by changing "Bestbuy" to "FutureShop" in the URL and vice versa), that way we'll keep our E3 pre-orders.

Same with where I live. My local FS isn't even remotely close to any BBs. Though I guess this could means it will likely be converted.

Yeah for those cases I imagine it's going to be a rebranded conversion to Best Buy rather than a permanent closure. But I've definitely seen a lot of places around the country where they were directly beside each other, and in those situations the stores should've been closed years ago.
