This is a hard question.

I personally prefer The Godfather and, if pushed, I'd probably argue it's objectively the better film. But Goodfellas is a damn fine piece of work in it's own right.

Goodfellas is an excellent movie and a lot of fun, but The Godfather (and Part II as well for that matter) is one of the best films of all time.

Maybe i will. This thread would be a strong influence on where I start, if i did.

Watch both Goodfellas and Godfather I & II. Also watch Casino, Scarface and Blow if you haven't seen them either.

All great films.

Then when you are done, play Vice City one more time.

Goodfellas.

Godfather is great and a classic but Goodfellas pacing is fast and its one of those movies that if its on TV, I have to watch it. The scene where Henry beats the shit out of Karen's neighbor is so satisfying. Apparently Ray Liotta's mom was dying/died around the time they filmed that scene so the pain and anger was built into that scene.

Godfather II
Godfather
Goodfellas

Goodfellas definitely has a propulsive energy that can't be topped, but both Godfather films let scenes breathe and let you into the world of a high ranking mob boss. On rewatches I like that Goodfellas make a point that Henry, Tommy, and Jimmy are only foot soldiers in the organization. Even Paulie would probably still be an underling compared to, say, Clemenza.

Godfather II
Godfather I

Once Upon a Time In America

Goodfellas
Mean Streets
Scarface

Casino

Line spacing is deliberate.

Godfathers 1&2 just get better with age for me. A few years ago 3&4 would have been reversed but I re-watched Once Upon... about a month ago and it blew me away in a way it hadn't the previous 2 viewings.

The Godfather and it isn't close.

The Godfather has something to say about the rise of Michael Corleone and his ascension to leadership. The man that starts the movie is different from the one that ends it. The journey is amazing.

In Goodfellas the same thug that starts the film is the same thug at the end with a lament that he can't be a proper thug any more. Also Goodfellas is too long by about half an hour.

Godfather I and II.

Vito Corleone, Michael Corleone and Tom Hagen >>>>>>> any fella.

Such class, depth and intelligence was rare then and it's rare now. Only Breaking Bad comes close to matching it.

However, If you only want to learn about the mafia world, I'd suggest you better watch a proper documentary/read a study. Not some movie.

Goodfellas has some good scenes but overall I don't think it's very compelling.
Godfather is excellent.

I saw Goodfellas for the first time last year, and this is where I came down as well. It's a good film with some strong qualities and some brilliant scenes. But as whole piece, I found The Godfather far more compelling.
