OK, this is the story so far. I'm on a dating website (OkCupid) and last week I received a message from a girl (hurray!) who lived on the other side of the world (boo!). I replied anyway, because she was pretty hot and fuck it, I'm a dude on a dating website, what else am I gonna do, sit around staring with teary eyes and my empty inbox all night?
We got chatty and they were pretty cool, very laid back. They asked me to chat on a messaging app, so I said sure, they gave me their ID and I added them. We didn't text much, but they were pretty forward sending me photos of 'herself' (not flifth), they didn't seem to angle for photos back and I sort of got the vibe they were fishing for compliments a bit, which I didn't really go for. thing is, she actually was hot. I did what any, we could say paranoid, but lets say curious young man would do and reverse image searched them. It turned out that many of them were from a blog of an ex-model, probably not that well known in her country, but you know, more than me in mine. I wasn't hugely shocked, but I was interested as to why they were catfishing me and for what gain. I figured until anything obvious came up, or until my curiosity wanes, I'd just keep playing along and see what happens. I really wasn't doing much else at 4am.
This went on for a few more days, they let out quite a lot of personal info, which most of it I confirmed as true for the model whose pictures they were using via google. This has now been going on for about a week. We only exchange a handful of messages per day and they have yet to reveal any seedy intentions.
Thing is, their inconsistancy bugs me. Some of the info they've told me I can confirm to be true for the model, such as her age, when she stopped modelling, even the age of her dog, I confirmed it all on this models blog in about 2 minutes sitting around at work. But they use an account name on the messaging app of the models professional psuedonym, which is quite weird considering the model quit a couple of years back and presumably dropped the name at the same time. It's sort of bizzare when they seem to nail a lot of the details and not things like this. I mean, I've seen a few sketchy looking profiles in my time, what with tinder and such and they generally tend to aim for the lowest hanging fruit. They're often just about one step up from a nigerian widow wanting to transfer a quadtrillion USD into my bank account and just as subtle with their intentions.
So whats the point GAF? They haven't asked me for any personal details, in fact, I don't think they even know my first name. They made it pretty clear that financially they're very sound. You couldn't even really say they're trolling or fantasising over some weird text-only online relationship, since I'm hardly going in balls deep with my messaging, I'm pretty vacant if I'm honest, just giving them enough conversation to keep the little game going so I can satisfy my own curiosities. Are they trying for the long game? Or are they really just that lonely? I'm pretty chill and if they wanna chat, I kinda wanna explain that they don't have to pretend to be someone they're highly unlikely to be just to get me to do that.
So what if they're not a catfish? Highly doubtful. I 99.9% believe they're full of it. What about the .1%? This theory has a few very weak little nubs going for it, firstly they speak the language from the country they say they're from. I know because I do too and I've thrown it out there already. Their replies didn't seem auto-translated at all and that's usually easy to spot. Secondly, the messaging app tells you their location if they don't hide it and they are where they say they are. Thirdly, a little more interestingly, they sent me a couple of photos from fancy photo shoots which dont reverse image search at all, I found them with magazine text all over them, I found a few scans and promos but nothing with just the straight photos. This just adds to the inconsitency though, it seems at times they've gone to a lot of effort and other times none at all.
Anyone on GAF have any ideas what they're after? At this point it has to be said, I'm hooked. Maybe not in the way they wanted, but I am definitely intrigued by their mindset and motivations. Maybe that's the point? Maybe they just want people to try and figure out the mystery of who they are and what the fuck they want?! I'm totally fine with chatting to weirdos and I'm not afraid of ID theft or financial milking, since I'm not going to fall in for any of that, but am I missing something GAF? Is there any other, slightly more subtle cons that I need to look out for in my adventure for catfish closure?
