So this is US centric voting? There are sometimes big differences in release dates across the globe. My list will be quite different from the one where I count theatrical releases in my own country.

For instance Inland Empire was released here in 07 and is without a doubt one of the best of the bunch. Well well. Just skip over that one, then.

it doesn't matter when it was released in your city. it matters when the movie was first shown i.e children of men, Paris, je t'aime, Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet do not count.

1. Zodiac
2. The Man From Earth
3. Bridge To Terebitha
4. There Will be blood
5. Stardust
6. Ratatouille
7. Mr.Brooks
8. Bourne Ultimatum
9. Into The Wild
10. Breach

What's your reasoning behind this?

1. The Bourne Ultimatum
2. Superbad
3. Enchanted
4. Transformers
5. Shoot 'Em Up
6. Knocked Up
7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
8. 3:10 to Yuma
9. The Golden Compass
10. I Am Legend

Yeah that's just dumb, I'd wager around 0,1% of the posters are located in Asia. Also The Host is not "c'mon", it's a masterful blend of social satire, dark comedy and monster movie thrills.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. No Country for Old Men
3. Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
4. Michael Clayton
5. Stardust
6. Eastern Promises
7. Juno
8. Ratatouille
9. In the Valley of Elah
10. Attonement

Hmm..this was a pretty good year for movies. There are many others that I liked but didn't make the list. Also, I'm sure I'm probably forgetting some.

Okay cool, I'm gonna put Raiders of the Lost Ark on my list since I first watched it this year. Sorry PTA.

Come on. Children of Men was released nation wide in 2007. Everyone could go out and pay to see the movie. How can you not count it because a few hundred people got to see it in it's limited release?

The standard we should be following is: Did it get it's nation wide release in 2007? If so, then it counts.

No. Children of Men is an '06 movie. If it was up for awards consideration with the '06 crop, it was an '06 movie.

Movies are global, people. There has to be some standard for cutoff.

1. No Country for Old Men
2. There Will be Blood(More like 1.01 lol)
3. Stardust
4. Hot Fuzz
5. Ratatouillue
6. The Host(American Release in March 2007)
7. American Gangster
8. Live Free or Die Hard
9. Zodiac
10. Simpson's Movie

Some special nominations, Paprika, 300, Zodiac, Live Free or Die Hard

Some movies I missed and want to see, Lust Caution, Naijing, and a few others...Mostly foriegn ones. Can't count Paprika and stuff...but its understandable.

Dissapointments, Juno, Superbad, Villian in Live Free or Die Hard, and not being able to see stuff like Assassination of Jesse James and Gone Baby Gone

was Children of Men included in the GAF Movies of the Year 2006 Voting Thread?

if not, i say it can be included here.

So we should go by first screening then, no matter how small.

Every date will be wrong.

How will every date be wrong?

You go by the date it first showed to the paying public, no matter when it is or where it is.

Who cares if they paid?

Festival organizers don't pay. Test audiences don't pay. Critics don't don't pay. However, these groups see the films well before the paying public.

The first screening is the first screening or as they say...

Why does your silly insistence have weight, but mine does not?

1. There Will Be Blood
2. The Bourne Ultimatum
3. No Country for Old Men

P.S. I Have yet to see The Darjeeling Limited and Michael Clayton (i.e. two movies I think I will enjoy).

That's really stupid considering some films may have only been screened at a festival before being up for an award. House of Flying Daggers was shown at a few film festivals in 2004 but didn't get it's full U.S. release until 2005. The live action Mushishi film was shown at a few festivals in 2006, but it didn't even get its Japanese debut until mid 2007, and still hasn't gotten a U.S. release outside of Sundance and Seattle International Film Festival. It isn't on DVD either, so how am I supposed to see it? I suppose when it finally sees a full U.S. release or appears on DVD I'd have to call it a 2006 movie even though it was literally impossible for me to see it until... well 2008 (or whenever it's release in English in theatres or on DVD).

This site is majority American, so we should go by U.S. release or have separate nominations for different territories.

You know what, I don't give a shit. Cajole is just gonna throw out the movies that any rational person can see aren't 2007 movies. Enjoy making your obsolete lists.

Waah. My position has been effectively ridiculed, so now I don't give a shit. :lol

I guess this is the part you can't wrap your head around. It's only obsolete to people who live in the territories that got these 'old' movies first.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. No Country for Old Men
3. Sweeney Todd
4. Ratatouille
5. Michael Clayton
6. Hot Fuzz
7. Eastern Promises
8. Charlie Wilson's War
9. Zodiac
10. Sunshine

Just three, because looking back reminds me that 2007 really didn't have many films that I liked:

1. Hot Fuzz
2. Bourne Ultimatum
3. Ratatouille

It doesn't matter what you say, it is a 2006 movie.

Limited release in the US is all that matters. That's the release date. There Will Be Blood will probably never show up in 90% of the people who post here's towns...

Time to move to big cities...

First off, if Children of Men is a 2007 movie, then There Will Be Blood is a 2008 movie. It's not getting voted in here. If I made a thread like this last year, Children of Men would've been obviously included, but said thread does not exist. Also just saw someone vote for Inland Empire. Same deal. Doesn't count.

As for the others being argued about, I guess I will allow Tekkonkinkreet just because of the people complaining. They make a fairly good point about the board being mostly American (and some Canadians). And I guess that goes for Paris, je t'aime and The Host as well. This isn't that serious of a thread, so if people really want to vote for those movies, I guess they can.

So the new rule is American limited release date, like DA just said. Paprika was released in LA in 2006 and has never even gotten a legitimate limited release in the US, so sorry.

how bout people stop being bitchy about when a movie is released. if the majority of people here saw it in 2007, i say they have a right to vote for it. this isnt a scientific study.

it's the same practice done by every single awards and professional list ever made. who cares about nationwide releases? move out of the sticks. though of course with lists dominated by stardust and hot fuzz who really cares about quality of the lists.

2. Eastern Promises
3. Gone Baby Gone
4. Ratatouille
5. 3:10 to Yuma

The Tekkon Kinkreet lobby is pleased.

Maybe you'd have a point if this was a professional award or list. Since Cajole weighed in it doesn't really matter anymore, but I've already said something regarding your line of thinking. Basically what if a movie is only shown at Sundance? If you're not one of those few hundred people then too bad, eh?

1 there will be blood
2 no country for old men
3 before the devil knows your dead
4 the diving bell butterfly
5 persepolis
6 ratatouille
7 once
8 atonement
9 eastern promises
10 control

other notable movies: the savages, rescue dawn, control, michael clayton, into the wild, killer of sheep

wow, this year has TREATED me good. during the summer when ratatouille and once were playing in theaters, i was convinced that both would would dominate my year's end list. funny how time skews everything. in other words... MY LIST SHOULD NOT BE TRUSTED! lets not forget the personal bias i have for perseopolis. i didn't get a chance to see paprika, zodiac or sunshine either :(

isn't that life? sorry you missed out. i didn't get to see snow angels this year. i'm not crying and hoping i can put it on my 2008 list because DGG is my favorite young director.

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Atonement
3. No Country for Old Men
4. Stardust
5. Zodiac

I loved so many movies this year but I'll limit it to 5.

Once again, maybe you'd have a point if we were talking about a professional list or award.

Anyway counting a festival release as the official release year is like counting a game as being released the day you got a review copy early.

1. Ratatouille
2.
3
4. Hot Fuzz
5.
6. Simpsons Movie
7.
8. Futurama: Bender's Big Score

I didn't see much this year, and I watch all the dramas through netflix.

Good luck, Cajole. This shit is a pain in the ass.

I am so sorry for joking with you to update the GOTY thread. :lol

And Count, don't be a dick. I agree with Mifune, but since this isn't some official awards show or some shit, I figured I'd be a man of the people and allow voters some leeway.

If this is going to be a yearly thing for now on, I may have to start thinking about the rules and when I'm going to do it.

1. Enchanted
2. Ratatouille
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10. I Am Legend

Enchanted is totally getting shafted :(

I only have I Am Legend on there to fulfill the '3 minimum' requirement
