Game soundtracks that are good from games you might not expect and why they are great

The_Lost_World_-_Jurassic_Park_%28video_game%29.jpg

I have been listening to this OST a lot lately and I really wanted to highlight how great it is. This game captures the Jurassic Park soundtrack feel more than anything else barring the films themselves. This was also one of the first games to have a complete OST containing a full orchestra. For those who don't know this PS1 game was composed by Michael Giacchino. He has done a few game OST during the 16 bit era for Disney such as The Lion King, Gargoyle and Muai Malard. This game was his big project until he really launched his career in TV and film. One of the coolest things about this is that he even went on to score Jurassic World. The inspirations can be heard from this old title that would creep back into Jurassic World. The game is broken down into different parts with different playable characters Compy, Human (Hunter), Raptor, T-Rex, Human (Prey) and all tracks that play with each characters have a really cool repeating theme and style throughout their tracks that link them togather.

Primordial Forrest : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4PM-4cRTx0
Isle of Giants: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Zh3tON_80&index=18&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00
The Plains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50VIT_-FGKc&index=17&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00

What I really like about this set is how the music really complements how the Compy is feeling in that given stage. The begaining of Primordial Forrest has this sense of wonder and exploration feel to it with it being the very first stage of the game is what the player is feeling and how the small mind of the dino would feel in the open world compared to everything else. It makes you feel small in a big world, which is what playing the compy is supposed to feel like. After the half way mark you get this triumphant feel you are just scrapping by, again like the Compy.

Isle of Giants is really similar to the first track except it's speed up just a little to make you feel like you are in a more urgent situation. In this level you avoid getting stomped and chased so it's appropriate.

The Plains takes it one step further and almost feels like a boss version of Primordial Forrest. It has a real finality feel to it like everything has come to this while still sounding very similar to the previous tracks. I love how all three tracks playout and string together.

The Forest Explodes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY9sEDTFe5g&index=8&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00
Base Camp Revenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K4acdI-2ws&index=4&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00

I'm going out of order gameplay wise but whatever. You will notice that the start of The Forest Explodes that it begins very similar to the first stage of the compy except instead of feeling small and wonderful it's ominous and imposing. Now instead of running and feeling weak it's empowering letting you know what a force you are now. The similarities between the two dino themes are like ying and yang but could work together put side by side. Base Camp Revenge is just simply great. You feel like a king. The music makes it sound like you are a hero defeating an all powerful villain but in reality you are devouring countless people and destroying things left and right. The sound of crunching on people has they scream with this music never gets old and makes you feel like a badass. Don't fuck with the T-Rex! The riff at the end of the track that mimics the end of the compys The Plains is just the icing on the cake. From zero to unstoppable.

Enter Carefully: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-aEVaObDN4&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00&index=15
The Canyon Bridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it3LzKoUk74&index=14&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00

The hunter gives me the most JP1 vibes of the bunch. The first 30 sec of Enter Carefully gives me heavy vibes of the music in JP1 when Lex is trying to turn the defense system on. The sound of when Samuel L Jackson is the messing with the computers. Gives me JP lab feels I dunno. Then goes straight into a similar theme when Muldoon and Ellie decided to take a jeep and look for Allen and the kids. They are not the same but the fact that I remember those parts in an original tune is ace work.
With the Canyon Bridge and other hunter levels it develops a nice theme for the hunter character that is repeated but I really like how they flip this when you play as the human prey. Opposite from Compy and Rex going from light to heavy, hunter goes heavy to almost whimsical for the Prey.

Also I didn't know they made a JP figure of the hunter from this game. Uh thanks google.

San Diego: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXTspZhM05A&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00&index=1

Even though the arch type of the final stages is listed as Human Prey you play as Sarah Harding from the movie, the only character from the movie in the game. Despite the fact that all the levels having you being chased or running away at a disadvantage the music is very encouraging because your the hero character. Not much to say about it other than I really like it and it complements the swing mechanic very well. Makes me feel like spiderman. San Diego being the final level against the two Trex mixes both the rex theme and prey theme pretty well.

Laboratory Hunt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1nGdUHDvRg&list=PLD6E4985C2AA8AA00&index=11

This one is something special. To me this track is the most Jurassic Park sounding thing that is not from the movies. This feels like a raptor chase that was cut from lost world or something. In fact even the composer felt this way as he snuck part of into Jurassic World. You can hear it at 4:35.

BONUS

Well can't talk about Jurassic Park music without mentioning this from the Sega Genesis game.

This plus the raptor chasing Grant as it opens doors = epic chase music

Furi.

I'm still sort of new to electronic music. I am aware that it is really popular in Europe, but Furi's OST was really awesome and I felt fit with the style of the game.

A very good friend of mine is also really into Scattle, so I am now paying attention to him.
