Well to be fair, crappy scans can actually make a game look better than it really is, too. It can disguise things nicely.

I still think it looks good, but I sincerely doubt it will look like the earlier stuff we've seen. We'll see...I could be eating crow on the 20th.

Come on now. I can count the damn pixels in the scan. The scans are technically "bigger" yes but the resolution of the scans are crap and the artifacting is terrible and THEN the contrast is a mess as well. I don't know who scanned these bigger images but he's sucks at setting up his scanner dpi. I think he may have used photoshop to brighten them though I have no idea. They're terrible plain and simple.

EDIT: All you have to do to realize how low-res the images are is try and read the text. Look at it. Terrible.

looks great to me I mean looks better than GC, and as far as i am concerned GC was on same level as xbox, and defintely sounds fun gameplay wise which is what i was hoping for.

So, violence, but toned-down? No blood/gore/excessive violence?
I'd say that's Nintendo's influence directly. But hey, I don't play games for blood, so....

the gamecube was the least censored console this past gen.. i think they got over the snes MK bit by now.

How so?

And that's a courteous, curious 'How so?' Not a 'OMFGWTFN00B how u figger?' how so. Just wondering what examples you're going by.

Surely this means either Factor5 or Level 5 is now interested in the Revolution....

Lollerskates stop reading into everything I write! I'm no giant insider or anything, I have just been watching this industry for many years, have run several web sites on the matter [anyone remember Ate3.com? I worked with Brian Stelter on that for a year or two], and have run into a few people. I attended the E3 during which GameCube was first playable as well. That was fun, although I'll never forget all the people standing behind me while I played Kameo watching it (it was fairly pretty), only for the game to move to 7 other consoles thereafter. PM could stand for something around here you know.

Also...

Don't forget that the GameCube always had a problem with screen captures.

He's probably talking about stuff like Conker. Then again, the Gamecube doesn't really need censoring considering it only had a handful of M-rated exclusives. I don't care for swearing in games anyway so that was fine by me.

that porn/bmx game wasnt censored at all on the gamecube.. while the xbox version was completely censored, and the ps2 version was slightly censored..

there were other instances as well, but i cant remember them off the top of my head.

I think I remember reading something about how BMX XXX had something like more boobies or stripper videos in the GC version or something like that.

EDIT: Damn, beaten.

Truth be told, Gaming-Age was my little secret during the ATE3 time period. We used a script from Livejournal that allowed us to update news faster than any site. In 10 seconds essentially, the news was live. Gaming-Age was (and still is to some extent) the place where all the news from the 'net is posted first and most quickly. I would frequent these boards in order to get the news out to those who wanted it. Then all the other websites started stalking this board. Its quite a famous board.

I think this game alone will be under scrutany due to you not only playing a game where you can kill people, but also "acting it out" in order to control the gameplay. Bad publicity usually equals good sales though, so I hope the game comes under scrutany. I'm glad that Ubisoft was wise enough to foresee this and maybe take away some blood and add the "mercy" element so it isn't as mindless as say...GTA. Speaking of GTA, I don't remember it having much gratuitous blood.

you kick your victim on the floor as blood spurts out, and eventually a nice puddle of blood forms around the body
you take your katana and cut the guys head off, a fountain of blood splurting from the neck

GTA is bloody.

I didn't think it ever really became ridiculous, though. GTA had its own style and it stuck to it. I don't think anything ever really got "gratuitous."

other than the virtual pet bullshit in San Andreas

These graphics meet my expectations of GC Turbo aka Rev. Why people insist on comparing a cheap console with an advanced controller that doesnt lose money against two expensive consoles that lose money and have basic control is beyond me.

I just saw in one of the screens a dead bad guy has lost his sunglasses.

Some of the San Andreas stuff got a bit brutal for me. I'm not trying to put down the games, they're amazingly well designed and I got a lot of fun out of SA, but I didn't really relish
sneaking into some guy's house and slitting his throat for some trivial reason
.

GTA is great for so many reasons. Here's just one scenario I came up with while I was bored:

1) Grab a taxi.
2) Start taxi missions.
3) Pick someone up.
4) Drive into an alley.
5) Exit the car, pull out a knife and slash civilian.
6) Watch civilian panic and attempt to run away.
7) Hunt down civilian and slash them to death.
8) Go back to taxi and repeat.

This game has so many unlimited scenarios. I pretended to be the Punisher the other day.

Its a trip, the scans look washed out. The images that appeared several days weren't scans, they were actually photos of the mag, I also find it strange that he didn't post the other pics. It looks great to me, the scans look too washed out but the photos are more crisp and theres no loss of color.

With final hardware to come in June, maybe some normal mapping will be added, the hardware shouldn't have a problem.

Damn this sounds like an awesome concept. As with most games, I don't care what the graphics will be like. This will be all about the gameplay experience based on the players' actions.

Yeah, I get the feeling that final hardware will include advanced shader support that is sorely lacking right now (something IGN has touched on about over and over again).

Well, that's what that particular capture method will do. It causes the image to take on the properties of the print material, giving it a more "polished" appearance.

Are people suddenly dissapointed?
They thought it was next-gen graphics :lol I've execpted GC visuals and it's better than that so I'm not dissapointed. Maybe it's going to be like the devs said, at first the graphics will be dissapointing for people that exepted more but that issue will fade away with the controller mecanics

just saw the better scans.

ubisoft have got a really neat style going with this game. not sure how to describe it, but it has a really appealing atmosphere to it. the lighting sets the mood very nicely in some shots.

however, it looks heavily touched up. expected really, given these are for a magazine. the total lack of characters casting realistic shadows on the ground and instead having ye olde circle shadows cracks me up though :lol especially since even games on the GC had accurate character shadows cast on the ground. makes me think ubisoft still has a bunch of work to do here still.

Probably still has tons of stuff to do with the game..

I doubt they are touched up either.. Plus werent they saying these were real in game shots on the current build?

7 months of development time left before launch.

Red Steel = officially announced by Ubisoft.

"Paris, FRANCE – APRIL 11, 2006 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced the development of Red Steel™, an exclusive first-person action title for the Nintendo Revolution (working name of the new Nintendo platform). Red Steel is set in modern-day Japan. Players will master both the ancient art of the katana and the sophisticated technology of modern firearms taking advantage of the emotion and immersive gameplay possible only with the Revolution’s remarkable controller.

“We’re honored to announce this exciting new franchise and we’re confident that
Red Steel will be the must-have title for the Revolution when it launches,” said Serge Hascoet, chief creative officer at Ubisoft. “We have been working closely with Nintendo to take full advantage of the innovative controller to create a thrilling experience that can only exist on the Revolution.”

Red Steel will make its worldwide debut in May 2006 at E3 in Los Angeles. With the style and flair of a contemporary action movie, Red Steel will appeal to gamers who thirst for a new video game experience, as well as those who may have not previously considered picking up a controller.

“Nintendo is excited to have Ubisoft bring Red Steel to the Revolution launch lineup,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. “Ubisoft makes some of the most innovative and critically acclaimed games in the industry and from what we have seen from Red Steel it is going to be a standout exclusive title on the Revolution.”

Ubisoft has a strong history of creating some of the industry’s top-selling video game franchises. To date, the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® and Rayman® franchises have each sold more than 15 million units worldwide and the Prince of Persia® franchise alone has sold more than eight million units worldwide. The Red Steel brand will reflect this expertise and build upon Ubisoft’s past to invigorate the future experience allowed within the Revolution platform.

Ubisoft will disclose more specific information on Red Steel in the coming months and Nintendo will reveal more information about the Revolution and its unique controller at E3."

I hope they don't leave out the blood.
I don't care either way, but that shit sells.

They already have that poster of the sexy girl in one of the pics.

More sex, lots of blood.
Do it, and it will sell.

(But don't fuck the game up to add that shit in.)

This whole "no blood" business is a rumor started by some website that has no way to back it up. Basically they saw no blood in the scans and made assumptions. I would wait until e3 (or april 20th, whichever gives us videos). Ubisoft isn't scared of putting blood and nintendo isn't about to stop them from it. Honestly, even though I don't drool over blood effects, I do think they add a lot...cutting off a guy's head with the katana and not seeing tons of blood rush out is disapointing. It breaks the flow. Having said that, I do believe there will be parent controls (I think Iwata confirmed this) that will be able to either stop the blood and/or prevent the game from being played. This way, theres no excuse for not including blood.

Edit* and if ubisoft is really going for that japanese gangster flick style...they need the blood, and it needs to spray.

They describe the first third of the game as "brutal." I know that it was said in the context of using less precise weaponry and not sparing the lives of your opponent, but I wouldn't use the word brutal to describe a bloodless experience. That and the name is fucking Red Steel.

yeah, exactly. I don't think we need to worry about blood not being there.

I would love it if the more you hack and slash the bloodier your sword gets.

Also when waving your sword around the blood flies everywhere, on enemies and the environment.

...

I'm a sadistic person.

Well, now you just have to up and go change your name to Cold Red-Steel

I'm starting to think that I suck at the internet. I couldn't find the new scans until now. :lol :lol
Well, the game looks good, no PS3 or Xbox360 good, but it looks way better than what the GC could produce. And I don't really understand all the complaints; I thought the REV was gonna be all about the gameplay. Seeing how the games are not gonna look way better than I expected is just the icing on the cake. :)
