Games you Disliked Yet Continued to Play

Eternal Sonata is the big one I can think of. Hated everything about and battle system petered out 5 hours in. The only reason I beat is because it was beyond easy and pretty short.

Resident Evil 5 almost also qualifies. Not that I dislike the game a whole lot, but I was playing solo and the game is a lot more frustrating that way.

Oh boy... here we go...

Advent Rising - I beat the whole game. I laughed at it the whole time through. The character model changing completely between angle changes in cutscenes, the glitches, the whole shebang. Ugh.

Puzzle Quest - I expect the hate to start on me here. I played for a super, super long time and hated just about every minute. I was trying to figure out why everyone was going ga-ga over what seemed to me was just a medievel Bejeweled with incredibly basic RPG elements. Several hours of my life went into an effort that never really got an answer... because it really is just that. But you can't say I didn't give it a chance.

Can't believe nobody mentioned Assassin's Creed. By about a third in, it became such boring repetition. Finished it anyway, but god what a let down.

Didn't have the heart to finish, but I can attest to this.

I like Puzzle Quest, but man was it overhyped. The presentation is bargain basement stuff I would expect from a free flash game. I don't expect much from a lower-budget game, but I expect a little more than that.

FFXII uses Middle or Elizabethan English, Old English is between 449 BCE and 1066 BCE, for fuck's sake.

[/EnglishMajorRant]

Regardless of the great localization or well-done usage of an older form of English, the plot couldn't save itself from being absolutely terrible. I do not understand the collective jerkoff session that Matsuno gets for stories. He could take a note from the writers behind Silent Hill, Shadow Hearts, Drakengard, Shin Megami Tensei games, etc. on how to write a story worth a damn. At least when it comes to Japanese games. I have yet to play a game made in Japan with a story even close to something written by a Westerner. Call me a racist or whatever, but I have not seen it.

FFX....played through about 23 hours, I think I was at some vast plains sort of area. I think it was near the end? Never finished it, don't really know why I persisted. I should have ditched it at "HA. HA. HA!"

I'll also add Resident Evil 5. That and Uncharted made me realize the only type of third person shooter I like involves me getting scared. It was too bright out pretty much everywhere for me to even flinch. The only part that could've been scary was ruined by
Sheva's inability to work a fuckin lamp in the cave
. Probably would've been more fun in co-op, but then it would've been even less scary for me.

I liked Madworld's story.

I would have, but I didn't come close to finishing it.

Maybe Killzone 2. I thought I was liking the game, but really, I just had to finish it.

I guess the FPS genre isn't my cup of tea at all.

And you guys are completely outfashion for badmouthing GTA IV. That is so mid 2008. Now we appreciate it for the incredible game it was. Thank you Rockstar North.

Just thought of some, and unlike my previous choices, I never grew in to these games:

Paper Airplane, from Warioware and on the DSi - That game FREAKS ME OUT. It's essentially "don't fly into the wall" with crazy controls. Tapping left or right a split second faster or slower than you should will kill you. And there will be laughter in the background. I can't fly straight down by just pushing "down", I need to rotate myself and hope I don't go slightly to the left or right and lose. Plus, if you do really well, you'll start to freak out. Yet, I bought it on the DSi shop and play it every now and then. Stupid high score table...

Half-Life - I didn't like it. Seeing a friend play Half-life 2 and noting that, gameplay wise, it looked very much like Half-life 1, discouraged me from playing the sequel, but I eventually did, and I really like Half-life 2, and the episodes even more so. However, I can't get interested in Half-life 1. I think it has to do with the indoor facilities... I don't really like them. The Rail area was really cool, though.

Dragon-ball Z: Legacy of Goku for the GBA - I don't know why, it was so long ago, but I played it and beat it. I think it was slow or something. I even played the second one, but even though I actually liked it, I didn't beat it. Both of the games had pretty good music, though.

Shovelware - Men In Black II for the GBA comes to mind. It was so horrible, it was plain funny. It had some nice animation, though.

Spore. I should have stopped after the Civilization stage. The ending was not worth it.

Urgh, what a massive failure of a game.

Suda 51 is the exception. His stories are so ridiculously crazy and filled with awesome metaphors that he could be the only writer I can forgive for being so insane.

Gears of War - I was bored by the second chapter but I kept going until the very last one. I am taking a one-month break before I beat it though.

Halo 3 - I should have stopped at the first Flood level, but I kept going, nearly quit during the Vagina level, but I finally made it.

Resistance 2 - Total disappointment, but I just had to see the ending (which sucked imo).

Metal Gear Solid 2 - My hype for this game was INSANE. And then Raiden happened. Still ended up beating it though.

Metroid Prime - I don't care what people say: this is an AWFUL Metroid game. WTF was all that scanning shit? Meta Ridley was the only good thing about it.

Madworld got kinda old by the end (mostly since I was screwing around trying to complete some of the random score challenges earlier), but the story was interesting for what it was.

The game that best fits this description, to me, was Enter the Matrix. What a terrible, buggy, repetitive mess. For some reason, I was curious enough to want to see how it ended, but it was still pretty awful.

His work in FFXII was unfinished and rushed after his sudden departure. That was not him at his best.

I forgot about that one. I played it all the way through.

Was it worth it? Maybe, as a Matrix fan. But it's not even an average game.

Mother 3?, FFT?, thats all i got, i generally agree with this thought though.

As for FF12, you should be made aware that other than the general world building and outlining(including some of the lore) Matsuno had NOTHING else to do with that tragedy of a 'story'. It should be Watenabe that gets your hate(no surprise seeing that he also penned X-2, KH: DS and Dissidia. He was also involved on X). I remember much whining from him about his inability to implement Matsuno's ideas.

Also, i should have figured that you majored in English. Got halfway through my degree before i realized that no matter how good my thoughts, if i cannot properly communicate them, they are worthless(though in my defense, English is not my first language, i had two others kicking in there before i came to the U.S.).

Now, see, X-2 was so much fun that I didn't mind that its story was garbage. Whereas FFXII didn't have the fun gameplay (to me) to save the wretched story.

Mother 3 brought me to tears, but it was only with the scene in the sunflowers that I really began to care for the story. I played the fuck out of it and beat it in like 12 hours, though.

X-2 is my favorite game in the series, but fun aside it's writing is what it is and it is not that great.

Super Mario World.

Felt like a major step down after the supreme SMB3.

Final Fantasy X.

I hate Wakka more than any other video game character ever. Fuck, I hope Wakka died of penis cancer or something.

FFIX is my favorite simply because the writing was so incredibly strong and endearing, and the translation top-notch (Hilgigars aside). X-2 would probably be a close second, just because I played way too much of that game and still enjoy its gameplay. It's addictive, like Milky Ways or something.

Fable II

When the most fun I had with the game came from playing the XBLA pub games, you know something must be wrong with the game. But I continued to play, hating every second of the game, and finally finished it.

Never buying another Lionhead title again is all I can say :lol

At least it introduced one of the best characters in the series; Mevyn Nooj! That guy should've been in X.

The game was 95% cakewalk of the softest quality; there were a whole lot of glitchy invisible walls that got you stuck Matrix-style if you jumped on them; it didn't fit my concept of ideal pacing, and probably worst of all I played it immediately after Mario Galaxy. Definitely the most unsatisfying game I have played to completion from this console gen.
You're way, way too hardcore bro.

Tales of Vesperia - Everyone hyped it up, and I had quite a bit of free time on my hands so I gave it a try. I can admit that it's technically a solid title, but man I disliked playing it. Had to beat it though! Sold it immediately after. That'll be the last Tales for me.

Actually, SMB3 was the last Mario game I played and enjoyed :( SMG looks great though.

SMW is not only my favorite mario but one of my favorite games of all time. The only thing I think SMB3 has over it, is that SMW is a bit too easy and you can go back and play levels to stock up on capes and extra lives.

Shenmue – I decided to try it out a couple of years ago after hearing a ton of praise from a lot of people online. Keep in mind I hadn’t really followed the game and didn’t know what to expect, and because of that I remember getting it and knocking on every single door I came across not knowing what the hell I was supposed to do. The controls at first were kinda off putting too, but something was still pulling me in and not wanting to let me give up on it. After getting used to how the game works and the controls it became my second favourite game of all time, behind Shenmue II. So, sooooo glad I stuck with it. Such an amazing experience! <3

I found Assassin's Creed incredibly tedious. Sure it was pretty but it was so horribly repetitive, I really liked the premise of the game too but the repetition of the activities drove me to quit after the third assassination. How the game received so much praise is beyond me.

Dead Rising is sitting on my shelf untouched. Not really a bad game but I got bored of all the escort missions and those dudes on that dune buggy thing kept kicking my ass.

As for FFXII, I loved the shit out of that game. The story wasn't very well executed and it had a lot of potential(Ivalice ftw) but the game was so fun. I actually felt like I was adventuring rather than walking along a predefined path littered with random battles. Come to think of it, I abhor random battles. The soundtrack kicked some serious ass too.

Rogue Galaxy - The game felt like it got worse and worse as it went on. By the time I decided I was sick of it, I was already near the end, so I finished it anyway.

Kingdom Hearts 2 - I have a fair list of complaints about this game, was a disappointment after the first one. I kept hoping it would get better, and it some cases it did and some cases it didn't. I played on Proud mode, and the Xigbar fight took me at least an hour.

I got near the end of Star Ocean 3, but ultimately never beat it. My hatred became so great that I just had to stop for my sanity's sake.

Halo CE. Forced myself to try and finish it but called it quits when they decided to send me through assault on the control room backwards. As if the library wasn't bad enough.

Jak II. I had reached a point about a third of the way through and was thinking, "uh, this kinda sucks guys" but people with extraordinarily poor taste told me it got better. There were about two good platforming segments, but I can't say the overall product actually got better.

I played Metroid Prime to completion thinking it would also improve at some point. It got harder, but never very interesting. I disliked the whole series but continued to play them anyway. Echoes was actually an improvement for only the end level of the game. Corruption was a huge improvement aside from the awful human character designs.

I didn't make the same mistake with Bioshock. Played about four hours, discovered it was a slightly less boring and slightly easier Metroid Prime and sold it. I had The Orange Box anyway, and Half-Life 2 Episode Two itself is a better game so I know I made the right choice.

I really didn't like Phantom Brave. I just didn't "get" the battle system. Over the summer I returned to it and I'm glad I did. I beat it and even though the story sucks, the game itself is quite good.

Banjo: Nuts & Bolts - Would have been better if it wasn't just the same 3 or 4 missions repeated over and over again.
Halo: ODST - Too much copy and paste in the levels, bad netcode for Firefight.

I hardly even know who you are, but I do know that you really dislike Jak 2. You must have really hated that game × responding to Ani's post

Wow, I only play games I love. Why would I waste my time with games I don't enjoy playing?

PS:

I'm looking for the following games for the 360, this is probably a great thread to ask:

-Eternal Sonata
-Banjo Nuts & Bolts

I pretty much stop playing anything that I am not enjoying because I don't have enough gaming time to even play the stuff I like. I don't want to waste time with stuff I don't like.

That said, if it's easy, not too time consuming and has easy achievements/trophies I will finish a game I don't like anyways :lol I don't pick games for that though, it just so happens that some of the games I think I will like I end up not liking.

Oblivion.

Well I tried to get into into, like Morrowind before, but the game just bores me. It's just not fun. Yet I re-tried when I picked up the limited edition (for collection purposes and battled hard to win over it. Though I did finish it up, the end result was still a unenjoyable, buggy mess of a game. I also tried Fallout but same results came up with that one and was certainly not going to put myself through the misery again.

Baten Kaitos - Good idea, bad execution. Also terrible voice acting for the localization.
But the music is awesome because I love Motoi Sakuraba.

Gears of War. I actually liked the 2nd one though. Oh almost forgot Halo 3. I really started to dislike that game around when all the Cortana BS started.
