GameStop opens preorders for Nintendo Switch

Is it better to preorder it now or after the 12th? I want to preorder it ASAP but my last preorder experience doing that didn't work out well. I preordered Smash Bros Wii U and Game told me they'd upgrade it to the adapter bundle when more information came out. I go in on release day and they didn't upgrade it, so I didn't get a GameCube adapter with it which I was pretty annoyed about.

Well, if the rumour with the 2 different switches at launch
one normal, one premium
is true, you just don't know which one you pre-order.

So I'd wait until the 12th and pre-order then asap

You're in the UK (as am I) so I'd wait. I doubt GAME will have issues with preorders so early after the presentation and most people will be at work/school all day anyway. Just go whenever you can on the 3rd and you should be fine.

Not sure how it works around the world, but in the U.S. pre-orders are almost always for the "base" version of a console. On top of that, retailers like Gamestop require that you visit a store in-person to switch editions (if you bought in-store). Online orders usually require that you just cancel the whole order and place another one. It's a royal pain that definitely makes it worth waiting for the bundle to go up.

You asked an entry level gamestop employee for information nobody has and they gave you an educated guess that anyone could have come up with. It's not a coincidence or inside info.
I might have agreed with you had this just been some niche product but I'm sure they're aware of the demand. I wouldn't be surprised if the higher ups at gamestop has sent out emails to all stores to inform them of when they most likely will open preorders. They're probably just waiting on a confirmation before telling people the day preorders will open.

They have not.

Basically, it's "when Nintendo actually has solicitations for the product, we will see what happens."

"Aware of demand." LOL this is funny after the NES Classic. Everyone knew about that little thing, only Nintendo fans know about the Switch. I've already gotten some "But I already bought a Wii U/3DS for Christmas! The fuck?" kind of reactions. =P

In case anyone is really wondering if it's a placeholder or not, the page says

Which means you'll get the difference back (in money) if the price is lower.

Was that about the Wii? Hahaha

Yeah that was an infamous post/mantra from before the Wii launched.

You can preorder it at GAME here in the UK but they have a £999 holding price lol.

There was also another retailer taking pre orders for £200. Not sure what happened with that.

Weird, I went into GAME a few weeks ago and put £50 down. Apparently that was enough to keep me one.

Is that the minimum amount?

In store it's now £20, I was told it was going to be £50 until they rang it through and saw that it's been reduced.

GameStop Italy added at the title of the preorder "price not confirmed" thanks to the shitstorm that happened before in the socials.

Yeah, because driving up demand is really fucking up!

If amiibos and the NES Classic were widely stocked, nobody would have bought them. Frustrating for the consumer, but genius by Nintendo.

Joke post?

They probably could have sold 5-10 times as many NES Classics as they did, had they been available to buy. How is that genius?

What advantage does my prime membership give me in this?
None in ordering it easier.. as he admitted below. He was referring to shipping time.

The only advantage that really could be possible if you have a Prime Now area that you live in and would maybe have access to some around launch since it's only in a localized area. Which was the case for the Nes classics.

People here are really pretending they knew the NES Classic would be huge? Really?

This has to be sarcasm.

I own practically all of the games that I enjoy out of those 30 on actual NES cartridges, for the actual NES that I still own and still occasionally play, and even I would have bought one had they been available. It's adorable as hell, it scratches the nostalgia itch, it's convenient to use with modern hardware (except for the short cord), it has the bells and whistles (like the original manuals in digital form), and it's actually reasonably priced. Success was guaranteed from the moment it was revealed. I knew, thousands of other GAF members knew, and you probably knew also.

They've lost my sale, though. Even if at some point in the future I can walk into a store and buy one, I'm no longer interested. I'm so tired of Nintendo essentially walking up to scalpers and saying "here ya go, have fun" at the expense of everyone who legitimately loves their products, over and over and over again. This is also one of the two reasons that I won't be pre-ordering a Switch. (The other reason is that I already own a Wii U and 3DS, and I've barely touched most of their games, so I'm all set with Nintendo for a while.)

Although a place-holder isn't it a bit on the high side? why even put in a price.

Gameseek in the UK have it up for £198.50 as a placeholder.

€400 seems too high but £198.50 seems too low.

You don't want it too low and then have someone try to hold you to that price if Nintendo comes in higher.

Easy to always refund someone the difference, harder to tell someone you're increasing the price.

Does it? 198£ is the same as $250 converted.... of course you guys get shafted on the tax side/vat so who knows.

I have like 450 bucks saved up for this thing. Hoping I can grab the system plus a few games with it.

Hurry up and take my money!

There must be some sort of chatter going on where the retailers have been told by Nintendo or suppliers a rough cost the minimum and maximum, I mean why even have a preorder price of €400 because who is going to pre-order at that price, it could well even be €399.99 for all we know, but it does seem high to me, and the £198 seems too low, if it's $250 then it's going to be about £250 here in the UK, we always get stiffed here on prices especially with the recent drop in the value of Sterling.

Yes, I thought it best to put in a screenshot rather than link to the site, you can search for the site, yes it is more than likely if it's $250 then it will be £250 here.

I don't really see why anyone would pre-order when nothing is really known about the Switch other than what it looks like.

Alright. I'll just go into town on the 13th and preorder it then.

in a few seconds some people will go nuts over the probably place holder price.

Also, thread title could have used "Gamestop italy" >>

The placeholder price at ebgames(Gamestop Australia) is $999 lol

Edit: Actually it doesnt even say placeholder price so that could scare people from pre ordering.

Ok, while I cannot speak for the company as a whole, the numbers per store seem pretty good.

As of this writing the slowest stores will see around he 15-20 mark while busier stores will see up over 50.

Each store will post these numbers for their location only on he front door after close of business.

This is for Gamestop stores in the US only.
