During Gamestop's recent conference call for Q2 they noted that PlayStation 4 sales through Gamestops retail and online channels have been 3x more than PlayStation 3 sales in the same timeframe. The timeframe being referenced here is the first 22 months of sales for the console.
GameStop also noted that the number of Xbox One units sold in the past 22 months has been almost double the amount of Xbox 360's they sold through in the same timeframe from launch.
Gamestop of course noted that this trend is not the same across the entire industry so what this shows is that Gamestop has a higher share of next gen hardware.
Please see the chart below to demonstrate total sell through in the USA for the PS4 and Xbox One and how it compares to PS3 and 360 in the same time frame. Please note that the title references sales from Gamestop only where as the below chart shows total sales from all retailers.
Gamestop also noted that Destiny sold through nearly 3 million units in the USA (excluding bundles) at retail according to NPD as of October 31st 2014 and this year they expect Halo 5 to be the biggest seller during August 1st to October 31st 2015 despite only a few days on the market.
According to Gamestop, sales of Madden 16 had a 42% digital attach rate. Gamestop are seeing many more digital purchases on triple AAA titles compared to last year.
PS3 and Xbox 360 sales are falling faster than ever down 56% YOY but this has been partially offset by PS4 and Xbox One software sales which are up 64% YOY.
Gamestop are working with Sony and Microsft on physical bundles over digital bundles. So unlike last year where you saw Assassins Creed Unity as a digital download, this year you will see the physical version of the game in the box like with Madden 16. Gamestop currently sell more than half of total PS4 and Xbox One software at retail.
