Gears Of War 4 multiplayer beta impressions and footage

But....That was up until people played it.

If H5 had changed things and we all bitched and moaned and then the game ended up sucking well then I could understand them being cautious but the MP in H5 is better than Halo has ever been.

I'm watching all this footage and it seriously looks like I'm watching stuff from 5 years ago. I just don't see anything all that exciting about jumping back in. If I wanted this I can get my fill with Gears 1 UE.

How could you guys have not been spending all this time imagining what a next gen Gears was going to look like and now how it was going to play?

Maybe its my fault for having to high of expectations but I was daydreaming about the weather presenting a huge threat to levels or creating really crazy cover and flanking opportunities and I'm not seeing anything like that.

I will eat serious crow if in 6 months this looks significantly different. I think its important that people set their expectations

Rod already said that having weather in MP would create too much instability gameplay-wise.

Also, not sure if you noticed, but every time we have a Halo 5 thread on gaming side, people like Jack the Nipper and a few other faithful opponents of Halo 5 show up to explain just how the game failed.

So no. Just because people played it doesn't mean there aren't still folk constantly harping about how Halo 5 isn't Halo because sprint, because clamber, because maps designed around sprint, etc.

No matter what you do as a developer, you're going to piss off some folk. I can already see that GOW4 will be a smoother, faster paced experience than GOW2 and 3 simply because of 60fps. And I'm sure that The Coalition is going to blow all of its surprises at this point.

It will look different because it's an alpha six months out not two weeks lol. Also there's a vast difference between Gears UE and this most likely...you can actually walk bounce. People just want a new gears with prettier graphics, very few changes and that's it. That's what fans want, and they are the people who will keep playing after the first week.

Sry but nope.

But its good to see that Coalition wont to do the "sake of change" mistake, that 343 did.
Good to have a new Gears game that looks and probably plays like a Gears game.

That's why COD, ASScreed and Fifa are so popular...

I like.

Gears 4 adds skill-based ranking in addition to the standard XP levels. When the game launches there will be five ranks: copper, silver, gold, onyx and master.

Fergusson said that the franchise has always tried to put equally skilled players against one another, but that this system was hiding in the code away from players' view. That could get confusing when a Level 5 player found themselves up against a Level 60. Gears 4 has a more public-facing ranking system that hopes to get around the problem.

According to Fergusson, the inspiration for the skill-based hierarchy comes from real-time strategy games like StarCraft and MOBAs like League of Legends.

Does that guy even have an Xbox? Seriously though its regarded by the majority as a huge success isnt it?

I just think if you make the exact same game again your not bringing in a new audience and your catering to a group of guys that think this is what they want but will likely tire of it after a couple of weeks because they realize there is nothing new. There is no challenge here. They mastered this game 5 years ago.

Really Jum you don't like it? What don't you like about it? It just feels so good to me there are very few things I don't like about H5 MP and that is coming from someone that was a massive hater of it from the previews.

I loved Gears 3, I didn't play much multi in Gears 1 & 2 but with 3 I had an absolute blast, King of the Hill especially which I hope is back in. King of the Hill in the football arena is some of the most fun I have ever had in online gaming.

Looks nice, but doesn't get my fire going, unfortunately. I used to love and play Gears all of the team - and was rather good at it.

Good memories, though.

Not a fan of the way they're doing the DLC maps, I'd prefer it if they were all available at once instead of rotating. Say you come across one map that's amazing but after rotation it's gone for another few weeks unless you buy it? and even then you will only be able to use them in private matches...

Won't be able to watch anything til I get home from work, but reading the articles is hyping me up. I know people will be disappointed in them playing it safe, but I'm happy that they are. Almost there.

Is UE4 known for problems with that? I know 60fps comes with a price, but jeez, so bad that the graphics are barely better than UE's MP?

Remember, they're using UE4 and pushing 1080p60 ... on Xbox One.

Personally, I find that that the Xbox One's resolution sweet spot is around 900p and that's perfectly acceptable to me, all things considered.

Gears of War 4 SP @ 900p30 and MP @ 900p60 would be totally fine by me. Would give them more room to push other things too.

DodgeBall sound amazing, I expected the gameplay to be similar to Gears 3 so I don't mind. I hope the Maps are well designed and they have plenty of game modes. I also like how they are doing the DLC maps, isn't as good as Halo 5 which you get complete access to for free but it's better than being forced to pay and spitting the community.

as a non gears MP fan, i was kinda hoping the change of developer would mean a change for the game's MP. but it seems they've played it very safe here, which is a shame to me.

oh well, hopefully the SP stuff ends up knocking my socks off (more then that awful E3 demonstration) more horror/atmosphere focus already has me interested.

Interesting impressions.

Most outlets are saying it's a newer Gears 3. Given what the Coalition showed last year + what they've talked about, I'm not entirely sure what the gaming press expected. What did they think the game was going to be?

Wow, it's Gears. But... it's doing nothing for me. It looks almost identical to what's come before.
Gears fans will be all over this, but I'm not seeing anything that makes me feel a need to return to it.

My biggest worry with the franchise was the new studio not being able to live up to Epic's fantastic Gears 3.

I have no qualms with the studio playing it safe with this entry in terms of online; if it plays as well as Gears 3 it will be fantastic. I'm curious to see how the campaign will evolve from Gears 3 also - that game had some fantastic moments.

This Gears 4 build up has made me realise how much I miss the series and how good Gears 3 was - definitely due a replay.

I just hope I'm not using the Gnasher 90% of the time. Gears 3 had a lot of variety of weapons that made the MP fresh.

Rotating maps is bizarre. At least it's better than the usual paid system, but I'm not sure it's as good as Halo 5's, or simply free.

SP @ 1080p30 and MP @ 900p (or dynamic) 60 is what I'm hoping for.

About the Character skins... Any word if it will be like Gears 3/UE (real characters) or Judgment (where you could change the color of your armor which was just disgusting)

I just noticed this game looks like Gears 3 and plays like Gears 3!

EPIC!
Ha i'm sorry but I cant resist.

that sounds great though. There's only been three core Gears games in ten years and one that tried to turn it into an FPS to appeal to all those people complaining now (and I bet none of them even played Judgement for more than a week).

I mean I'm not going into every Souls thread asking why this one is another Souls game and doesn't have jet packs and shit to appeal to me.

Yep I am with you on that. Maybe devs feel pressure from the gamers that want nothing but 1080p and 60fps no matter what. 900p with much better anti aliasing for Rise of the Tomb Raider would have been perfect too.

I'm still hoping that Gears 4 SP will look damn sweet though.

Even with DS your under a false impression. The differences between DS3 and 2 are huge and encourage a whole different mobility type of play. The core idea of what DS is, is of course alive and well and immediately familiar but the DS series more than a lot continues to evolve.

Meh, looks like more of the same. I had really hoped they would do something different with the game.
I was hoping for something much more darker and brutal.

Im sure it will play great and I'm sure i will love playing it but this was the perfect opportunity to create something different.

This is true of any series, really. Compare H5 to H: CE (or 2, 3 , Reach or 4, ;)), and then see the 'IT'S THE SAME OMFG' vs 'THEY CHANGED EVERYTHING WAAAAA'.

Perspective.

We had different and it was trash. The core gameplay of Gears is too good and too refined at this point to change it too much.

Neat new gameplay additions, new modes, new maps and new weapons are more than enough change for me.

Gears of War has continually evolved but first and foremost it's a cover-based shooter.

the difference between Gears 1 and 3 are huge as well. If you're not really into these games it just looks like the same cover shooter but there's a million little things that make it great. I just don't understand what people complaining actually want. Trying to say "oh it's just Gears 3" like that's a negative is crazy. Judgment changed up the series in dramatic ways to appeal to all those cod players and it sucked.
