Anyone fan knows that GiTS SAC and 2nd GIG are that make GiTS amazing. And both are not direct by Mamoru Oshii :p

I like the movies but SAC and 2dn GIG are indeed amazing.

uh, no, not really

also SAC owes far more to oshii than shirou masamune, who had precisely as much to do with that show as he did the movies (aka, nothing really)

No, you wouldn't be getting a White Black Panther if no one ever said anything. LOL Quit making false equivalencies and hyperbole.

I agree it's important to call attention to it, and that GITS isn't a good example of fighting the battle on.

It's just calling attention alone isn't going to change anything really. There has to be more done from minority writers and directors to be socially conscious on their casting and providing a platform for actors to move on to bigger projects.
My mistake, we wouldn't be getting a Black Panther movie at all if that were the case.

And I am saying it IS a a good spot to be fighting this battle on. If not this then the next movie that's supposed to have asian leads in however many years? This is a high profile asian property being brought to the big screen here. If there were ever a place to be highlighting this issue, this movie seems like a fitting place. Calling attention alone doesn't help, but that doesn't mean it doesn't help period.

Rinko Kikuchi is awful.

And I don't think people understand this movie wouldn't even have been greenlit without the involvement of an actress with ScarJo's popularity.

LOL, Ok, that's closer to the truth.

I don't think adapting Japanese licensed anime/manga automatically means the leads have to be Asian. You're going to end up in the same argument loop about there not being Asian American stars to lead a big budget mainstream American film. It has to start in America and be built from the ground up here in order to increase the number of platforms Asian Americans can be featured on and hopefully become stars.

I don't think a GitS adaptation automatically needs Asian leads either. I would also say you don't need a white lead either. But its simply because all leading stars are white, therefore etc. Edge of Tomorrow was a great movie based on a manga. I'm simply saying that there is a huge elephant in the room surrounding this more well known Asian property and its adaptation and people are totally justified in saying "hey there's a huge elephant here." It's a fitting enough stage to spotlight the issue.

But you can't change anything unless creators become socially conscious about it and actively fight against the status quo. The first in the fight would be Asian/ Asian American/ Asian Western production companies, writers, directors; however if they don't see an issue and maintain the status quo, why would Hollywood deem it necessary to change?

Yeah right, cos there isn't currently a trend of rebooting a whole bunch of shit to see what sticks to the wall.

Coming soon, Akira. inb4 should be grateful.

And how do you tell them it's an issue if no one says anything? This is what Ming Na Wen said on a panel when the topic of GitS came up.

"Whitewashing will continue if Hollywood thinks it's OK," Wen added, noting examples from Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's to Emma Stone in Aloha. "The fight is exhausting: two steps forward, 10 steps back. But it will continue because we don't voice our opinions and band together to say this is wrong."

It happens in every thread like this, but it comes off as condescending when people come in and say, "you don't know how the industry works, whining isn't gonna change anything" when there are actual Asians in the industry like Ming Na Wen and Constance Wu calling out the same stuff we are. Yes, you start from the ground up. But you can't maintain the momentum for progress if people aren't vocal about demanding it.

They are Actor's not creators. Do I really need to start listing Asian/Asian American/Asian Western production companies, writers, and directors that have either never or rarely cast Asian American/Westerns in lead roles yet alone in any role in their films despite their success? That's where change could immediately start and provide a platform for talented Asian American actors to get noticed and get an opportunity to be featured in a big-budget mainstream American film. Now I'm not saying they're obligated to do this, especially since they're successful doing what they're doing, but my point is the vast majority of them are following the status quo, why would Hollywood even care about featuring one in their films, and if they did, they might as well poach talent from other Asian countries where they're already international stars because those countries cultivated their talent and featured them.

Ghost in the Shell is not a good example of Whitewashing.

Oh trust me I know. I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not blaming any one studio in particular or any one movie. I'm arguing the movie's validity as a talking point for this issue and as a lightning rod to draw attention towards the industry as a whole. I'm not arguing for a recast. I don't think the change should happen with this movie. But it's a high profile blockbuster adaptation of a story with originally Asian characters. To not bring it up is to talk around the big elephant in the room.

No doubt, the talking is necessary because it keeps the pressure on Hollywood's ass; but it's just that any actual change will be incredibly slow without anything else going on.

I don't know If you've seen this video I've posted before, but this guy gets it and I'm hopeful the younger generation of Asian Americans become more socially conscious and work together in order to make change happen much faster and perhaps create their own genre of films with Asian American narratives.

Yeah I have and I completely agree that we shouldn't rely on Hollywood changing anytime soon and that we should be doing stuff to showcase more talent out there. I don't think GitS is a good example of whitewashing. However I do think letting GitS pass without contention or without bringing up the subtle whitewashing would be unintentionally letting them think that we are okay with things the way they are.

I mean if GITS ends up being as successful as I think it will be, then it will usher in the anime/manga era in Hollywood and I fully expect these future adaptations to follow the same formula with a white actor as the lead, and perhaps an Asian actor as a side character for "diversity" sake and hush people up.

Ok, I agree with you, but my point is that's not how Hollywood operates, hence it defeating the purpose for Hollywood to adapt an anime/manga property if they were to cast somebody Asian as lead.
Everyone understands how Hollywood operates. That's what people are trying to change. What is even your point? Wtf

Fixed for you, but yeah most likely.

I just want there to be a discussion around it. If it were to succeed uncontested, I think that would be a big shame.

If it turns out Scarlett is playing Motoko in an caucasian robot body, I'm gonna riot though.

I think it succeeding contested is even worse because it would show how little people care.

Prepare to riot then. LOL

They've been trying to "reboot" Akira for like a decade now, though.

Remaking things and adapting them from other media isn't really a trend either. It's more like a constant.

Was this posted? New poster, fucking rad.

Not at all. The movies are some of my favourite movies of all time and I despise SAC and 2nd GIG. Litteraly everything from the art style, animations, voice acting and characterizations took a huge dive with those.

Even Arise is better than that shit show.

Rinko Kikuchi is awful.

And I don't think people understand this movie wouldn't even have been greenlit without the involvement of an actress with ScarJo's popularity.

This movie not getting greenlit would probably have been for the best though.

Which one of these were lead by big name actors?
Dragon Ball Evolution, Speed Racer, The Last Airbender, Pacific Rim, John Carter, Tron Legacy... there are too many blockbusters with nobody actors to name them all.

And they all bombed. Some not as bad as others.

man... congrats on the art department if that is indeed the official theatrical poster!

surprised something like that even would get approval

While this is the majority of how it works, I take issue with it being the only way Hollywood does things. For example, Pacific Rim wasn't exactly brimming with star power by having Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in the lead roles.

And Pacific Rim barely broke even worldwide, mostly due to the Chinese marketplace saving the film's ass.

So Scarlet isnt naked when she falls off the building and there is no blood when those guys at the table get shot up? I dont think I'd like this movie. Too PG.
