Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

But the last ten years of GitS has been one story after another exploring different versions of the Major's past and her origins.

You can tell the people who have and haven't watched anything besides the 1995 version.

Her background was an important part in the Kuze arc.

First things first:

* I have always been against Scarlet for the role [I dont care about the whitewhashing though, Motoko as depicted in the movie has caucasian features, not asian]
* Thermo-optic camouflage suit looks quite bad, it would have been a clever idea to change it's color for the movie, maybe something darker, Scarlett Johansson doesn`t have the most athletic body out there, but looks quite good in the Avengers Black Widow suit.

That said, I liked the trailer a lot more than I expected, skyscraper dive looks surprisingly good and the aesthetics in the trailer are really nice, CGI is overdone in a couple of places though, a pity.

Mixed feelings but it seems some things look nice, will watch.

PD.- That poster artwork look very, very nice.

I've rewatched this trailer about 10 times in the last hour or so.

I thought this was going to be clueless Hollywood trash, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how reverent it looks (in some respects) to the Oshii interpretation.

My anger over whitewashing and the fact that Hollywood felt the need to make a Ghost in the Shell adaptation remains, but given it is happening, I'm finding myself rather hyped to see this now.

Googled to confirm Tricky (haven't really been following production), and found this pic from last day of shooting. Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kawai (og Gits composer) in there. This gives me hope even if they weren't directly involved.

Makes me want a fifth element 2 so bad.

I only watched the 1996 version when it came out, nothing else after so that first half is familiar then it changes on me in the last half of the trailer. Really loved the first one I think I might watch the everything that came out afterwards. Is the rest as good?

Most people don't even know, that there is a whole lesbian sex scene in the manga which was cut out of the western release. Shirow is very kinky, sometimes which is not a bad thing bad people would be very angry, if they would add those themes to the movie.

Cut from the original release; it's been present in the English edition for over a decade.

So out of all GitS media, what would you say is the most essential to see? I've only ever watched the first few episodes of Stand Alone Complex, but figure I should see the original film now at least. Should I also finish SAC (e.g. 2nd GIG and Solid State Society)? What about the non-SAC film sequels?

Thanks!

IMO, watch SAC, read the manga, and perhaps the GITS 1.5 manga too. Personally, I think that Oshii's films are a tad overrated. They're visually excellent, but they're not as deep as some people try to make out.

I'd avoid the Man Machine Interface manga. While it's very pretty, the storyline is technobabble filled wank IMHO.

I don't know what is happening in the above picture and I have seen GITS multiple times...

really? you don't remember the sequences with the huge parade balloons, animals and characters, etc?

I thought the gigantic holograms were a pretty clever way of updating that visual. there's something really unsettling about seeing an enormous monk praying.

with you guys on the suit though. I mean she looks hot as hell but the off-white is weird, and that shot of her coming at the camera borders on CW cheez. I'd rather they had done it as a constantly scintillating thing, odd properties of light meta-material sort of way. or simply white (which just seems more "manga", with the hex shapes and tron lines, etc).

visually I am quite pleased with this though. as for the Japanese influence – still not sure what to think. original GitS movie mixed a pile of asian influences together, some chinese, tibetan etc. this actually does sort of seem to side-step that, at least for me, in depicting a future where we have all been put on Shuffle All culturally.

Scarjo still doesn't show any effort in her delivery.

And the effect kinda Matrix lite (I mean in the sense that they reuse the Matrix filming techniques without coming up something new their own.)

The art direction is great though.

SAC is different, it's more of a thriller than the original. It's still pretty good though. Arise not so much although the 2015 movie is good.

The rest of the franchise is more action heavy.

Why is the Major wearing lipstick while out on operations? Is it supposed to turn invisible too?

Of course as an Asian American myself I am incredibly disappointed the Major wasn't portrayed by an Asian American actress. However, I can't deny that outside of a few weird green screen shots this looks really cool.

Yeah, I'm disappointed by that too, but the visuals are on point. Is this based on the movie or the anime?

Hate to post two times so close, but I would throw money without thinking it twice for a Kojima GITS game.

One man can dream.

I'd love to see a Kojima fan-cut of a fight sequence from GitS.

Like, just give him the raw footage from the "water fight" and just let's see how he cuts it.

I have many criticisms of the guy's style but dude knows how to edit.

If only he had a fledgling game studio that could probably use the quick infusion of cash a licensed property could bring!

It'll be PG-13 for sure.
I can't blame them for this. it seems obvious and easy to release as PG-13 for box office then release the "unrated" disc later for another bump. And they can do what they want creatively that way, just not for theatre release. the MPAA sucks, what can they do.

I'm calling it, that suit IS her skin.

It was visible in the Shelling sequence in the OP. If you look closely at the video when Major emerges from the white goop and it flakes off like in a wind, you see that the "suit" is beneath it. Or that is her skin and it has seams like the suit. So maybe it is a suit? I dunno.

My money is on for the sake of the fragile American viewers, it's her skin since we all know how devastating a actual nipple is.

Innocence doesn't have that much action.

Well, you have two movies which are pretty philosophical and only have action towards the middle and end of the films.

And then you have a 52 episode TV series, a TV movie, another 10 episode TV series, and a new movie which all have tons of action.

It's fair to say that the majority of GitS anime is action focused.

Seems like it, and then there's the whole "you're the first of your kind" thing, some kind of "you're the chosen one" shit. Ergh.

None of you watched 2nd GIG? Lol. They're lifting the Kuze backstory so clearly.

I have to be honest, I've only watched the Oshii movies. :P

Ahh thanks the philosophical parts of the 96 movie drew me in but I am not averse to action as well.

There are a couple of frames of the final battle vs Spider-Bot when she is hiding behind a pillar. It looked damn great/ on point!

Anyone can screengrab this?

To be fair the Major is suppose to be an android

Okay, in the Stand Alone Complex series, the first season had a heavy social commentary storyline which was a bit like Oshii's stuff but with a more "exciting" thriller focus as they tried to solve a mystery. But in the second season (2nd GIG) they went all in on the thriller aspect instead with a refugee storyline about a military conspiracy and whatnot. At the crux of this storyline is a charismatic leader of the refugees called Kuze who was like an anti-Major. Through him the season explored Major's true past and how she got her cyborg body as a child, how he knew Kuze when he was a child and their different choices in life leading to them being on opposite sides of being used by the same conspiracy.

The GitS film is apparently based heavily on 2nd GIG.

But Matrix didn't copied bullet time technique from GitS or Neuromancer. They invented it themselves. GitS should invent their own filming techniques.

The Matrix got sold on the concept of Ghost in the Shell as how cyberpunk can work.

I am pretty sue she wasn't dying.

There was very little to turn her entire body into cybernetic parts if there was no traumatic event involved. It varies from incarnation to incarnation though. In Ghost in the Shell she doesn't know how human she is, in Stand Alone COmplex she was dying from a plane crash, in Arise she wasn't even born but placed in her body before birth.

Well, I guess cyborgs like myself have a tendency to be paranoid about our origins. Sometimes I suspect I'm not who I think I am. Like maybe I died a long time ago, and somebody took my brain and stuck it in this body. Maybe there never was a real me in the first place, and I'm completely synthetic like that thing.

They look to be going for the Stand Alone Complex backstory: dying kid saved by putting her into a cyborg body.

I'm a big GitS fan. I have all of the movies and series on blu ray (spent a pretty penny importing some of them) and all the manga.

This looks promising enough. I'll probably go watch it in theaters.

In an ideal world, this whitewashed piece of shit would fail financially. But Trumps president, so this movie is probably going to make a ton of money.

Visually, it looks solid, albeit a bit too clean for my liking. I liked the grit of the original movie. And Scarlett Johanson, outside of the whitewashing, doesn't strike me as a good major.

All right then. I guess the only thing the movie is lifting from Oshii is set pieces.

edit: seems silly to say "only" when I spot the shelling sequence, the assassination, the thermoptics camo fight and the tank battle.

Looks good but i think im not the only disappointed that she is not completely naked for....... plot reasons.

Scarlett nude scene is not important to me, but I think having some nude robots in the movie is essential for.... theme reasons.Besides, i think there's a higher chance for it.

Looks really good.

Some scenes are a bit too carbon copy though. Isn't this it's own story and not a remake?

Not my pick for the major either but at least with Scarlett the movie has some pull.

It is suppose to be its own story. But if you're familiar with the GitS manga, this is actually kind of a thing the franchise does. The show often borrowed scenes from the manga while also recontextualizing them.

I'm all for more Asian American representation, but let's not conflate Hollywood adaptations of Asian properties with Whitewashing.
