Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

All right then. I guess the only thing the movie is lifting from Oshii is set pieces.

edit: seems silly to say "only" when I spot the shelling sequence, the assassination, the thermoptics camo fight and the tank battle.

A lot of the iconic stuff Oshii did especially in the first movie has been redone in the other GitS anime too, it's funny how they can't let it go. The camo building drop, mecha tank battle, some sort of assassination scene, etc are all in SAC and Arise as well. Lolz.

This movie is definitely lifting A LOT of the art direction from Oshii's films though. More so than anything else. The fist fight in the water is right out of GitS1 too.

People will be upset about the inevitable PG-13 rating, but I don't think it's a big deal. GITS has been PG-13 for a lot longer than it was ever R. Stand Alone Complex, 2nd Gig, Solid State Society, and Arise could all pass for PG-13 with minor cuts, except maybe the Jungle Cruise episode of SAC.

Bigger issue is that it looks like the Major's characterization may be off point. Oh well. Watching it anyway. I'm not silly enough to judge this for how closely it adheres to the dozens of hours of GITS that I've already seen and can enjoy again any time I want. It'll be different, that's a given. Yet to be seen if it's different in a good way or bad.

Trailer is surprisingly OK.

The trailer was decent, but could they not hire a real cinematographer for the film? Everything just looks...off? I have a feeling this would be a better film if they had made better choices, though I can understand why most talented directors and cinematographers would stay very far away from this. Hell, they should have asked Takeshi to direct it.

This will be an arguing point until the end of time.

"There's no effort in delivery"
"She's an Android"

Whichever way you look at it, there's gonna be something synthetic about the performance.
Not only is she an android, she's The Major. This isn't nearly as true in SAC, but in the original film she's completely wooden by design

I'm not going to say that casting ScarJo to be wooden in this movie is even nessecarily a deliberate stroke, but accidental or not its not like the original Major was particularly expressive

I don't feel her delivery is "robotic", just lazy.

Also, why the hell does she has lazier delivery than she did in "Her"? Try to fucking explain that one to me.

As someone who isn't really that passionate about the source material I think this looks stunning visually. Originally I was a little worried about the art direction and look of Neo Tokyo but I like what they did in a live action context. Good or bad, this should at least be pretty entertaining.

Oh shit Takeshi? My interest in the movie shot up.

Yeah Scarlett still feels insanely out of place but everything else looks pretty damn good, maybe it'll be worth a watch.

Appropriate though.

Isn't that the background, that she got turned cyborg when she was very young?

I guess thats a plotline invented by Kenji Kamiyama who wrote and directed the stand alone complex series.

Kenji Kamiyama had a difficult time identifying her and could not understand her motives during the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Due to this, he created an episode in the second season where he recounted her past. He was then able to describe her as a human who was chosen to gain this superhuman power; she probably believes that she has an obligation to use that ability for the benefit of others.

Ewww. I went from "This looks great" to cringing at the line "You are the first of your kind..."

Why why why do they have to throw dumb shit like this in. Why does everyone have to be special or unique?

The big question is who is the composer. It looks like the opening is being scored by Kawai considering the live score was a brand new piece and the IGN 'version' seemed like the actual film variant.

If it's Kawai, that will set the mood for a lot of the scenes.

The Gits has been stuck repeating itself since 1995 and I think it's fair to say that every single adaptation of Gits has gotten worse over time. So, my expectations for this are pretty low.

It really doesn't feel like anyone has made any significant contribution to the franchise since Mamoru Oshii himself. Literally every single other adaptation has leaned heavily on his visuals and even hollywood can't escape borrowing his shots. How utterly boring. I can only hope that this film has something to offer beyond recycling Oshii's visuals and 2nd Gigs plot.

Feels flat and focuses too much on action rather than on the themes of GitS. I don't think I will go see it, it just looks too mundane and generic.

Also, Scarjo looks like she is focusing too much on her delivery to sound mysterious and hip while I always saw Motoko as this resolute and very confident speaker. No whispering or trying to sound cool please.

I don't like how much focus is on Kusanagi instead of the team, and her being unique. But it looks like they really nailed the shit out of the tone and atmosphere. I wasn't interested in this even a little a few months ago, but after that trailer I think I'm in.

Looks great, and pretty faithful to early Gits (particularly Oshii's vision).

Very excited by what I've seen, and really don't have any problem with Sarjo in the role.

This film is being made for a general audience, who for the most part are going to be completely unfamiliar to the source material.

There are a lot of small details that look much better than in all the previews so far, such as them not being afraid of using Batou's character design after all.

I'm not sure though. While I agree the character of the Major has been different in every adaption, the plot beats suggested here sound a bit like a generic, westernized story. GitS, even the increasingly mainstream Japanese versions, is weird and haunting.

Visually it's hard to mess this up given the source. It also seems to play closer to the second anime film regarding design. Scarjo physically looks great, but she isn't robotic enough...her eyes especially have too much life in them making it hard to buy some of her lines.

But ultimately...

FUCK. THIS. MOVIE.

I won't pay a cent to see it.

The designs look fine, but something looks low-budget about the way it's filmed. I don't know if it's due to being filmed digitally, or the camera work, I really have no idea, it just looks "fake". It doesn't have that filmic feel. For a sci-fi movie that's a bit off-putting.

I'm perfectly fine with borrowing shots. I want the audience who hasn't experienced the anime to get a feel for this world. Of course, what I'd really love is for them to enjoy this movie so much they'd pick up the source material and give it a go. But doubt that would happen even if they loved. What really bothers me about this trailer and concept though is how much focus seems to be on the Major being "unique" and searching for her past. I truly would've loved just a movie about the team chasing down a case. And I think that'd be more fun for the general audience stepping into this world.

I'm still interested in seeing this though.

This looks terrible. Setting aside the casting complaints, I was hoping this would still be competent.

It looks so bad. Why are they jacking shots and ideas from the original film when 1. they look absolutely rank in this amateurish greenscreen soundstage style and 2. they aren't even exploring the same themes? Like no shit the Major wasn't going to do anything in the nude in a PG-13 blockbuster action flick, so why even use that shot? The original film used this to explore the concept of identity in a digital future in a story about a character who was questioning what defined their humanity; now it just looks like Scarlett just picked an unfortunate color of jumpsuit. Why invite the comparison at all? This is kind of a step beyond evoking the original, it's straight up shoving pieces of it into a movie where it looks like they won't belong. This is just The Bourne Ultimatum with some shots stolen from a different movie.

also just lmao at Batou

Fucking finally some sense in this thread

I just wish Masamune Shirow had stayed with manga. I mean writing and drawing stuff instead of just drawing pin-up. I found Orion and GitS mangas stashed in my moving boxes and they still kick ass today. I love the way he fills pretty much every panel with ridiculous amount of small details which makes returning back to his works a pleasure.

I think that's an issue with any franchise that has an iconic aspect to a work. At that point the people interested in directing or just working on new entries want to do their own take on this or that scene. Look at Star Trek with Into Darkness and Wrath of Khan (or really any recent Abrams film heh).

From the trailer alone, i feel like it's going for Hollywood cliches above all else...

The Major is now 'special' in someway and is 'the first of her kind', the puppet master is now your 'villain who reveals the truth', Batou appears to get his eyes in the course of the movie, rather than being a part of his backstory/character, and the scene at the start of the trailer, points to a removal of political intrigue, as shes rescuing people rather than assassinating a foreign politician.

I'm not writing the movie off yet, it could be good, i'll still watch it, but i doubt it'll live up to the series usual high standards.

This is kind of the thing that you might fear would happen when Hollywood decides to do an adaptation. In the anime, full prosthetic bodies are relatively commonplace and not particularly unique. In fact, Motoko's appearance actually comes from a cookie-cutter production model. In the original material, most of the technology is seen as mundane in-universe, so it allows us explore those concepts without the characters going "woah this is amazing". Doesn't seem to be the case here. If this is aiming for general audience then I suppose they feel like they have to help the audience out a bit.

Abrams just sucks though, no one can say that about the majority of Star Trek - both on TV and in film. That's actually the worst example you could have used before for better or for worse Star Trek always tries to do something different, until you hire Abrams.

- The "first of your kind" stuff is lifted right out of 2nd GIG
- There is no Puppet Master, it's Kuze
- The modern Kusanagi is basically a superhero who leads a taskforce doing the right thing. If you think Hollywood is bad, the new GitS Arise series was basically a reboot showing the origin of Section 9, and how the Major personally recruited every member to basically... do good. It's more Avengers than Diet Philosophy.

The idea that GitS as a series has high standards is laughable.

Visuals look amazing. Maybe it's even cut and edited better than the 20 something seconds teaser made me believe.

Story... We'll see. Scarlett: Her hair looks fake

What? I don't remember this. At all. I will eat my shoe if you can provide me with some evidence. I believe you, but I genuinely don't remember.

Well the Kevin timeline stuff is the first time, I'm aware of at least, where Trek had a pretty much complete reboot/timeline nonsense. So in Trek's case prior to the new movies it didn't really make sense to redo certain scenes/movies.

Just look at Indiana Jones with Spielberg recycling his own content with Crystal Skull. Another one would be the Terminator franchise with how many "I'll be back." lines. It's part of film making culture nowadays to a large extent. I want to say it's nostalgia pandering but it's also that new directors want to 'top' their predecessor (or themselves) in some way.

It's her actual hair, iirc. There was a short interview and she got asked about it.

The visuals for me don't evoke any sense of the original source material and I know it's been said many times before but Scarlett is entirely miscast. This doesn't give me any vibes of the original movie and not even the manga. Flashy it may be but it feels like every other generic sci-fi cyberpunk movie out there. I'm already not going to watch the movie on account of the whitewashing...mess.

While the beginning scenes might not be the same as the original film, the robot geishas taking hostages is straight out of the first episode of SAC.

It looks like someone might be using them though, considering the guys come in and shoot everyone up after.

Can't say if that's a good or bad thing.

How can you not love Tachikomas?!?

On a side note, does anyone know who sings that Enjoy the Silence cover?
