ah cool, never seen that. how close did the director/s work with masamune when creatinf standalone? i mean overall it doesn't really matter, both that series and this film has every right to put their own unique spin on characters etc. but i'm interested in the production history.

Well the origin story told in SAC was already overwritten by the story in Arise so really nobody knows. Basically I just treat every version as a separate story having its own canon. Let every artist (director/manga artist) do with it what they want.

Though I don't think where Major came from is really important to the story (in the versions we have gotten). Maybe it matters more in this one. I'm fine with it being different as long as it is good.

Oshii is involved as an advisor I think, as well as Kenji Kawai for the music. I don't now how Masamune Shirow is involved, but Oshii and Shirow have a very different view on the topic anyway.

Ok, ok. Now they have my interest. That was A LOT better than I was expecting. It also had way more nods to the 2 animes and Stand Alone Complex than I thought it would. Wow.

Never thought I would say it, but, I'm impressed.

My only issue is Batou doesn't look quite right.

I like the series a lot but I'm not a purist type kinda guy, so I will give the movie a chance and be there day one.

i think only major and batou are "white", the rest of section 9 (the good guys) are asian.

Takeshi Kitano plays Aramaki the chief of section 9 and the "bad guy" laughing man is european or american. In the manga and the anime the bad guys are the Americans and the Japanese, to keep the puppet master project a secret. GitS was always very diverse.

There's a lot about this I dig - and I say that as a big fan of the IP. ScarJo seems like she'll do just fine - maybe a bit one-note in her broodiness (as she usually is), but admittedly that's not exactly off-key for the character. Also, minor note: they should probably cut that de-cloaking shot from the final film. The contrast between Major and her background reminds me of the live action Speed Racer flick, but in a bad, unintentional sort of way.

Edit:

Visually, it might have been a good idea to darken the flesh-toned suit. I get that it's closer to the source material this way, but something about the color bumps in the translation from anime to live action.

I dont know, the trailer doesnt seem that great to me. Like a bad copy. I guess we dont see cyber punk that often on the cinema though, so there's that.

And again there is one thing, without Scarlett the movie would not have been made. And of all the Hollywood actresses, she does comic and anime movies with full professionalism, no "haha, yes I know, but I will do "real" movies afters this again" in interviews afterwards.

So I will not join in in the Scarlett bashing. She plays those roles, keeps movies like this made and also stands to the product.

You do know, when they pitched the Matrix they showed people Ghost in the Shell and told them, the movie will be like this.
