Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

Isn't that version of Gits this is based on? i mean, i have nothing against Masamune Shirou but i even prefer Arise because of how it also takes more cues from the movie.

No. The story, according to the producers, is based on 2nd Gig (season 2 of Stand Alone Complex, the TV series). They're just also using some of the iconic scenes from the original film.

can't shake the feeling that every time i see Scarlett in this movie she is like holding a smile back. Is like watching ice cube in an action movie, i can never take that guy seriously.

Posters are badass.

But the trailer, unsure about it. It reminds me of every terrible scifi film like Equalibrum and Aeon Flux

I haven't watched much GitS but my main takeaway from this trailer was that this guy looks embarrassing:

If it werent for him I'd have a higher opinion of this trailer.

Just watched the shelling sequence... they have no rights playing with my emotions like that.... movie will prob. suck, but man, that made me tear up.

It'd be interesting to see the breakdown in graphs/charts for what Ghost in the Shell films/ shows the GitS fanbase has watched. Personally I've never seen the original 1995 film or its sequel. My gateway into GitS was Stand Alone Complex, both seasons, the TV movie & the PS2 & PSP games. GitS: SAC is one of my favorite anime shows, something I watch on the regular year after year. Still trying to get into ARISE - its alright.

Making plans to watch the films that started it all soon though - it'll be interesting to compare it to SAC.

The Gits has been stuck repeating itself since 1995 and I think it's fair to say that every single adaptation of Gits has gotten worse over time. So, my expectations for this are pretty low.

It really doesn't feel like anyone has made any significant contribution to the franchise since Mamoru Oshii himself. Literally every single other adaptation has leaned heavily on his visuals and even hollywood can't escape borrowing his shots. How utterly boring. I can only hope that this film has something to offer beyond recycling Oshii's visuals and 2nd Gigs plot.

Yep. I'm curious to see how dumb this adaptation will be kept, they're aiming at the blockbuster crowd afterall.

I've got a Prometheus vibe... Stunning visuals, all the rest dogshit. Scarlett is as bland as ever and the actor playing Bato is the miscast of the year.

I'm ... actually kind of hyped now ? This wasn't even on my radar before. Looks like 2017 will have a few trippy sci-fi films between this and Valerian.

The most we need is a faithful adaptation in live action. They don't need to add anything new to be quite honest.

I hate saying this, but I think Zack Snyder would've been a better fit for this movie. When handling an adaptation of existing material he's at worst slavishly reverent.

edit: or that guy who did Tron Legacy.

Not to shit on this and be negative, but from all the leaked media the only good parts so far have been the scenes where they have completely redone from the anime, makes me feel like it will be a Zack SNyder type of movie. Like Watchmen, where some sequences are good such as the Dr. Manhattan origin but the entire film as a whole will fall apart.

Again, will give it a watch when it releases, as I really want it to be good.

Looks promising for now. Visually looks great beside some green screen-y shot.

Batou bugs me through. I need to see more, but I not feeling him in particular at the moment.

I see a lot of people saying Batou looks bad/embarrassing. How exactly would he have been improved?

He seems like about what you'd expect in live action. Compared to the 95 film and SAC I don't see it being a radically different design.

It's not off-screen, it's using an auto-stabilizer to remove the shakiness from IGN's video.

Well...okay then. I've never seen what the auto-stabilizer actually looks like, though I've occasionally had YouTube ask me if I want to use it on some videos. Heh.

New guy does look like Batou, just a younger one than most were expecting. He's also not a big guy. Batou's a BIG GUY.

I wish it was directed by Snyder. At least I would be insured something far more trippier than what I saw in this trailer. The shit I saw here made it feel like a generic action movie.

Was Sucker Punch not enough of a warning sign to keep him away from anime properties?

i was like 11/12 when i saw the original film. can barely remember much of it except for a few key scenes and the fact that i was partly interested in watching it because the major was basically naked for portions of it (hormones and all that). the story and philosophy no doubt went straight over my head and i remember not really understanding anything that happened.

this looks... eh. some nice visuals and shots mixed with some utterly generic moments. i can't help but feel that this is going to end up being a throwaway, forgettable blockbuster. really not feeling johansson (although wtaf with the posts in here implying she's 'too plump'. gtfo with that garbage).

and yeah

batou looks awkward

BBW = Big Black Widow

She looks like a teletubby in that suit.
is this a joke?

...nah.

Visually it looks fine, but I'm not liking the anmesiac Major angle, at least in how central it is in the trailer.

After the trailer and that intro it seems hard to imagine this being bad, I think at worst it'll be soulless but atmospherically amazing.

This might be well done if the trailer is anything to go by.

Some shots looked almost like a television series, but I'm optimistic this will help pave the way for more Hollywood adaptations of Japanese anime (for better or worse).

Looks great, that Depeche Mode cover sounds wonderful. Story, as others have mentioned, looks like a mix of elements from the series and film.
I would've liked to see The Major portrayed much colder and stoic, but SJ slays in everything so I'm sure it'll be awesome.

I'm hoping for Fury Road levels of good, but if Prometheus has taught us anything, it's that you can never tell based on a trailer.

Like I said earlier on this page...is there any particular reason you guys feel this way? Like what exactly is bad about him. Because he looks like the character to me.

It looks like cheap cosplay.

Some things work in anime but not in live action. They could give him some cyberpunk normal eyes with fancy pupil or something instead of trying too hard to stay close to the original designs.

There's nothing "anime" about Sucker Punch. And considering that movie was trying to deconstruct action movie clichés and heroines, Snyder would be a prime candidate to do a GitS film.
