Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

hmm saw it on the computer this time and it looks better, i think seeing it on a phone screen underwhelmed me but i quite like the shots in the opening.

that clip of motoko punching dude that was released earlier still looks awful in here though but overall it's a pretty slick looking film.

some of the city scapes and the the intro sequence they posted have me more optimistic about this than i was a few days ago.

Go watch the TV series, Stand Alone Complex, instead. A lot of people seem to think the 95 film is the end all be all but I really think SAC is the top notch GITS. The movie is still good but it's something completely different really.

The 95 film is one of those that isn't mindblowing, it's just consistent and entertaining. A good combination of junk food visuals and some philosophic introspection before it became required for a science fiction movie to ponder its navel.

The '95 film is really a pretty small, humble movie that gets in, gets out, and avoids anything too extravagant in terms of storytelling.

It's kind of a dangerous movie to hype to people.

I watched a bit of SAC and I don't remember much but I do remember liking the 2nd gig villain a lot. I thought this Puppet Master would be similar but the movie is too short and doesn't really dive into the Puppet Master's philosophy much.

I saw the trailer. I thought it wasn't that bad. I had some apprehension because GITS, and by extension, GITS SAC was my AOTF.

I wonder if they will do the city montage sequence, which in my opinion is the quintessential cyberpunk.

Also I'll be interested in watching the Japanese dub if there will be any.
 
actually looks surprisingly solid at this early stage so i'll hold out hope but OOOOHHHHWEEEE... that Batou looks fucking rough! :D

Biggest mistep so far. Much more so than Scarlett.

Ah well. Do we know how hard this follows the plot of the original? If I get to see ScarJo rips her arms off trying to pull the latch off a Quad-Tank i'll go ahead and say it now - whole movie gets a pass. I'm buyin it.

Probably mostly the '95 movie. Scenes like her taking the guy down in the water is directly taken from that, probably more I'm forgetting since it's been ages.
 
Visually, it looks like they're trying. It's like a mashup of GITS, GITS 2 and SAC. Some of the framing is a bit off. I think I can accept this.
 
This looks much better than it has any right to, but I definitely have my doubts about how faithfully it follows the story/direction of GitS in general. Seems like they are making it a more personal story about the Major--typical Hollywood move. I suppose I understand why, though.
 
I love the original film dearly, though I have not seen any of the material that came after.

Very little there looks good. They're aping some of the designs but capturing none of the style. While I've tried to keep an open mind, after seeing her in action, Johansson was very much miscast. I watched the trailer with one extended cringe. It ended what curiosity I had about the film.
 
Visually looks great, except for the fucking main characters. Holy shit.

I mean, ScarJo looks pretty good except when she's in the bodysuit (yeah, the Major's anime anatomy is probably impossible IRL but jesus. They really fucked up Batou's look imho.

Still... a lot of that environmental work is pretty sick. And them robots.

Also I don't know what tone they were trying to hit but it definitely went far closer to hollywood than any of the original things. Dunno if good or bad.

I'll watch it out of curiousity I guess

When I'll have some time I'll write down my own opinions, but for the time being I can't hel but quoting this other impression. I really can't realize how people can be so impressed by such a trailer.

That wall run bothered me more than it should have.
 
I was just thinking it's funny how people get after Shirow about being a perv when motoko pretty much always wore normal clothes in the manga as opposed to that getup in the movie and whatever sac was.

In the movie I really felt like there was a strong purpose to it.

SAC was fucking embarrassing.

Huh. I'll admit it has been a while since I re-read the manga, but I don't remember it the same way you do. Especially vol. 2

I remember lots of naked floating in cyberspace motoko, panty shots galore in every fight scene or whenever really, and lesbian threesomes.
 
Looks like exactly what you'd imagine a mediocre big budget version of GitS to look like. Can't blame them, but can't really look forward to it either.

Some day we'll get an Appleseed police procedural series. Please :(.
