At least this Batou isn't this Batou.

Is this supposed to be Chin Han as Togusa? Guess he's not all natural in this one.
More photos at Collider.

But that's a major aspect of his character...

Yeah I'm hoping that isn't Togusa. The whole point is he's still an entirely natural/normal human. Of course, based on what they have shown so far I don't expect much development for anyone beyond The Major and maybe Batou...but it's still important if they at all intend for this to be a franchise and develop Togusa later. If he's part machine he is just inherently a different character already

EDIT:

Don't think it is...

NIIIICEE. Was hoping Flying Lotus would do it, but this is great. Mansell is really amazing.

In case you don't know, Mansell has worked Moon, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain. He's really great. I do hope they'll keep some of the main arrangements from the movie. The main GITS MUST be in the movie. No way it can't be.

Artistically/aesthetically they have adapted it well. But a lot of Hollywood films (and its concept artists etc) have been influenced by GitS for the last 20 years — so this was never going to be a concern for a film made in 2016.

The real difficulty is in how well the are able to deliver on the narrative, characterisation and casting... and I don't know how I feel about their ability to do those.

Well that's a bummer. I haven't seen anything besides it.
Is the sequel not similar either?

Despite being by the same director I would say no, Innocence is not that much like the 95 film.

Innocence is still a good movie in its own right though. And the Stand Alone Complex series is still very good, it's just more of a thriller. I recommend watching both if you're at all interested in the franchise.

Yeah he looks old as fuck there. But it could be the under lighting. No one really looked good in those cast photos. And Chin Han has looked younger/less wrinkly in other movies. Outside of Takeshi Kitano, he's the only other Asian male actor in the movie. Hard to tell from the side profile.

Innocence is drop dead gorgeous but turns into a bit of a mess near the end. It is interesting but flawed. Probably worth watching for the visuals alone but conceptually a weaker entry in the franchise.

Aside form some good visuals (many taken from the Oshii movie) i'm not that positive.
I especially am not sold with the angle they took with the Major character and the whole cyborg/human juxtaposition theme.
We'll see how it pans out in the full movie though.

Already the line "you were saved to save others" and "you should've designed me better" are making me roll my eyes, but if the movie goes in the "humans are so special" angle... blargh.
The Oshii movie delved a little deeper in the subject than the usual shit you get when dealing with AIs, at least.

Togusa and Aramaki aren't the only Asians.

I think these guys look fine from that shoot also:

it absolutely was a concern, the fact that the movie looks this good visually is quite remarkable.

Every time I see him I think "He's old as fuck". Togusa is suppose to be a young dude

One of the many senseless changes that go against the original material.

The utter lack of respect towards the mangas (let alone the animation derivatives) is what is making me wary about the film. It reminds me of Zach Snyder fucking up Batman vs Superman by turning it into some bizarre fanfiction that goes from slavishly reproduced to completely off at random.

Yeah they look fine. Although I remember the cyber eyes looking pretty silly in one of em.

Couldn't find any other Asian male actors off the imdb outside of Arameki, Togusa, and Saito.

Eh, I don't really agree. At least one producer and the director are fans of the original material. And the cinematographer watched the two Oshii movies. Yeah Togusa is apparently changed but on the other hand you have people complaining about how Batou should have been changed. Can't please everyone I guess.

I would have preferred Togusa to be young still too for sure. I can understand giving him a more "Grizzled cop" angle though.

Where are those shots from?

They "leaked" back in August. Here's the rest:

Aramaki has grey hair here but not in the trailer, I assume that means there's a time skip. Same with Batou not having his cybernetic eyes and later having them. People were originally complaining that Batou didn't have the implants based on these.

Well yeah I was mostly talking about, at least, Saito. But I assume there will be others in bit parts also. IMDB isn't really comprehensive and accurate prior to a film coming out.

So do we have any explanation as to why Tokyo or wherever in Asia this takes place is so crazy multiracial by GiT's standards?

Shirow is no strange to mixing ethnicities and races, but that usually happens around fictional cities and nations such as Dominion's Newport and Appleseed's Olympus.

I mean, there's a certain risk in letting the fanboys run things. If things go bad you can either get something way too close to the original material to work on film or create its own crappy continuity. AFAIK Snyder was a DC fan and BvS still happened. That's my fear.

Edit: I can't believe people are aping on Mansell. Go watch The Fountain, you philistines.

Oh that's cool. I must have missed those.

Aramaki does have grey hair in the trailer.

I don't think you can really compare them. Snyder claims to be a DC fan but he clearly doesn't understand Superman's character at all. Meanwhile you have producers here specifically talking about Kuze and specific SAC episodes by title like "Affection", which they otherwise wouldn't know anything about. I don't think the people in charge of this film are "fanboys" that are slavishly recreating the 95 film and/or SAC, but I think they are fans of the franchise and respect those works.

I don't think this movie has to be direct adaptations of either of those previous works. Nor do I think it has to be something wholly unique either. It really does look like it's ending up in the middle, which is fine with me. Each separate GITS entry has been its own continuity anyways.

Weird I watched the trailer yesterday and swore it wasn't grey. But it definitely is. My bad haha.

Is the entire movie in Tokyo? That scene where she's walking in a busy street looks like New York.

I mean for architecture, the robots, clothing, computer stuff, action sequences etc. Like I said, Hollywood's concept artists have long been the types who grew up with GitS as an inspiration and you see that in a lot of works that have any kind of "futuristic" city type vibe. At minimum they have a whole library of GitS content they can (and did) clone 59 match for that stuff.

It's what they were going to do with the characters that was always gonna be the relative unknown and tbh I am still gonna be wary up until I see the film for myself.

Well, there you go. You really didn't need to come up with some weird imaginary rules to try and argue that volume 2 isn't the original comic; just say that you didn't like the evolution of the author / series. ^^;

FFS, it isn't the original. The original is, shock horror, the original Ghost in the Shell manga; the original series that was serialised between 89 and 90. Key parts of the definition of original are "first", "earliest", etc. MMI was a sequel work, and was pretty much its own thing. Ergo, not the first, not the original.

Saying that MMI is the original is like saying the The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, etc, are the original Star Wars films.

Nope, gonna need more than that.

this will be a shallow mess with some recreated scenes as fanservice, a shoehorned hollywood "who am I" story and no understanding of what makes the source material great. this trailer.. it lacks taste. and the music was awful. the aesthetic appeals to people who like anything out of the concept art factory but it lacks any of the nuance of the original works. it reminds me of the total recall remake and other crap from recent years. I would have much prefer this to be something like what Chronicle is to Akira. Something new and unique that draws inspiration from a great work, instead we'll get a streamlined focus tested pile of shit.

When I'll have some time I'll write down my own opinions, but for the time being I can't hel but quoting this other impression. I really can't realize how people can be so impressed by such a trailer.

people are impressed with anything that looks sci fi these days. as long as shit is going on they are happy.

Sorry but no - it's a good soundtrack but really not suitable for a trailer
