Ghost In The Shell (2017) Trailer

I think Japan and the Japanese creators and owners of the IP prefer Scarlett Johansson in the role. LOL

When will people understand that Asians in Asian countries =/= Asians in non-Asian countries. There is a HUGE difference. In one, you see representation everywhere and seeing a non-Asian actor in an Asian role is seen as an exciting change. In the other case you hardly see representation and seeing a non-Asian in an Asian role is just case of the already rampant exclusion in media

I'm well aware of that. However, your own qoute states that "Takeuchi Atsushi noted that while the film does not have a chosen setting ...". So while the manga has a clearly defined setting, the movie isn't as specific. From what I've seen of SAC and the manga, the setting takes much, much less from Hong Kong and much more from Japan than the movie does.

And that's sort of the thing. GITS takes place in Japan, but the movie takes so much from Hong Kong that, had the character names not been Japanese I would never even think it takes place in Japan.

To me all that says is we dont need to say the name of the fictional place in Japan that we modeled after Hong Kong. If it was truly Hong Kong they would have just said it was in the film. Especially after the lengths they went to to copy it.

Oshii and the rest of the team choose the city because it was perfect for the symbolism and imagery they wanted to showcase. Art takes priority over logic

or maybe...

...In the [90's vision of the] future, China takes over everything.

This. It's incredibly frustrating when I see videos that ask Asians in other countries what they think about Asian American representation.

No, I completely understand that aspect and empathize with it, but I do think it's complicated due to the fact of thriving media industries (film, tv, music) in China, Japan, South Korea, India, etc... and the licensing of their properties primarily coming almost exclusively from Japan in the form of manga/anime to Hollywood. Asian Americans don't have any rightful claim to these properties, no more than anybody else and if they did, then perhaps an argument could be made for Japanese Americans to be cast; but now you're faced with a group that consists only 0.2 percent of America in a country that has over 300 million which would defeat the purpose of Hollywood adapting it in the first place. And that's not even getting into the ethnic differences between Asians and the politics of casting one Asian in a different ethnic Asian role and how it's received globally. Not to mention, the Japanese creators and owners of the IP want to make the most money as possible, and if they've bought into the idea that White people would make the most globally than unfortunately what can you do?

Now if the argument is for diversity than I fully agree and want to see more Asian Americans in film. But we know Hollywood is an endless cycle of casting, cultivating, and developing White stars for their films so saying you want more isn't going to change anything. The only way it's going to change is either from within or circumventing the Hollywood system.

One thing I don't see criticized by other Asian Americans is the amount of prominent Asian American/Western producers and directors who have a history of not casting Asian American/Western as leads or in any roles in their films. I mean if they aren't going to advocate for change, why would anybody else? That's something that could help change from within and help create Asian American stars.

Another thing i don't see is any criticizing of Japanese creators and ip owners who are perfectly happy with White people being cast in the leads.

Another thing I think that hurts Asian Americans is the lack of any superstars created in American media and inability to impact American pop culture in general. Hollywood has a tendency to give chances to superstars of other forms of media to cash in on their name value they already have and Hollywood doesn't have to start from scratch, unless you're White. LOL Which leads Hollywood to cast other native Asians who are already international superstars either in their country or region.

Like I said, it's unfortunately a very complicated issue.

Glad the kept the music. But if you're going to re-create scenes like this, either do it faithfully, or make it your own. That did neither, which is the feeling I'm getting from the trailer as well. It still looks like a bad knockoff devoid of style and watered down for a PG-13 rating.

Honestly I don't feel like explicit nudity is essential to this scene. Personally I like the movie's shelling sequence a good deal, and may even like it better. I don't think it looks like a bad knockoff at all.

Uh, this scene is pretty faithful. It's not shot-for-shot in every single second but it's pretty close.

Eh, it's not required but it shies away from the birth imagery. In the 1995 movie it's not a doll being manufactured, but more a person being created. Though it uses some of that imagery like where she's pulled up to get her skin, the clip overall feels like a hyped up suit up sequence especially with the music at the end.

They chose... poorly.

The biggest issue for me was the trailer music.
I Disagree, they can use that for future trailers
The current trailer if you like the track or not is perfect.
The trailer would not be the same if they used different music and it was a damn good Trailer due to direction and the music chosen.
I'm not even keen on the full track but in the trailer it's fantastic.

GITS takes place in the fictional Japanese city of Niihama, Niihama Prefecture (New Port City, but that doesn't mean the design couldn't be inspired by a real world setting. Oshii has stated in interviews that he referenced Hong Kong to realize his vision of the city.

In the manga and SAC the reference city is Kobe, no doubt about this. I spotted a lot of reference places.

A new Japanese trailer is out: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GAci-77Y7Kw

I'm still cautiously optimistic this might not be that bad. It probably helps when my expectations are extremely low for something like this.

Not really a new trailer. No new scenes or anything, just a slight reworking of the original trailer for Japanese audiences.

Interesting that they're not calling it Kokaku Kitotai for Japan, though.

Just a heads up for any American Ghost in the Shell fans...Stand Alone Complex isn't available in the US on blu-ray, but the Korean release is excellent and has the English dub + subtitles. Currently back in stock: https://www.kimchidvd.com/en/good/goods.jsp?good_seq=20946

Got mine delivered few days ago and it's a great set.
So they commissioned HKE to make a song for the trailer, but didn't end up using it. I cannot believe they didn't go with this.

Wait. They really commissioned HKE?? This is awesome, why would they not use this?!? Would have been way better than what they ended up choosing.

Actually both seasons of SAC are getting a official US release in March along with rerelease of the 1995 movie on blu and in select theaters.

I was about to say that's cheaper than I remember it being but it doesn't include 2nd GIG.

!!!

Where? I only know of a steelbook for original film.

Oh shit, had no idea. Never mind then lol.

Though American anime releases on blu can sometimes be completely botched as far as the transfer.

They also have 2nd GIG on there as a separate release.

Still not cheap, but it's a lot less than any previous blu-ray release. Especially some of the out of print versions.

Hopefully these new American releases are up to snuff, though. Will likely be much cheaper than the Korean sets.

I just discovered that the manga are available on Kindle/Comixology now. Finally can buy them digital.

GitS: Innocence is releasing on February 7th. Up on Amazon. Can't find the 95 film except for that edition I already own.

They just announced it last week. Mondo is doing the limited edition steelbook so you might have to pre-order through them.

For those asking about the US Blu-Ray releases for SAC, Best Buy has both seasons up for pre-order with a release date of February 21, 2017. $50 for each.

Season One
Season Two

It's seems bizarre how little marketing this is getting though. Isn't Stand Alone Complex considered a classic? You'd think they would throw a little more promotion behind a long-awaited blu-ray re-release.

Tried watching it again and... yeah, Johansson's not sticking. Somewhere between her lack of distance, the constant upset look on her face and the terrible body suit shots thus far, it just seems like a glaring misfit.

Also for the HKE version of the video, in the comments is another edit which is even better. This one even better accentuates what a poor decision it was to go the dumb ye-ol-80s-remake route.

Will it play in region 1 players?

New image popped up on Paramounts Germany social accounts.

Watched the 1995 movie just now as my introduction to the IP, and I have to say this trailer looks a helluva lot more interesting than what I just watched.

Besides the fact that most of the movie was exposition, a lot of the movie still made it seem like I knew about the series previously. They never really fully explain what a ghost even is for instance. I saw some parallels with the 1995 movie in this trailer but a lot of it seems to be stuff the 1995 version didn't even mention. Does the new movie have an entirely different script or

Edit: Also I guess I'm part of the problem but I hated the soundtrack during the shelling sequence lol

It's using a lot of imagery from the Stand Alone Complex television series (it's apparently going to be a loose adaptation of the second series). That entire scene with the robo geishas is lifted from the first episode. The stuff about the Major not knowing her past is clichéd nonsense they've created for this movie.

Nice I'll keep my eye on this
