Giant Bombcast - 05/17/2016

Call ins would suck so bad. It's like the questions segment on their live panels. Arguably the worst part of the shows.

Interesting to hear Drew talk about getting lost in Uncharted 4 despite the criticism every Uncharted game gets for leading players by the nose.

I did get lost in chapter 8 when you were supposed to go in a cave after a stealth/combat sequence, but I totally missed the save and was trying to find a way down these sheer cliffs for long enough that the game gave me a hint about where to go.

I don't know man. It's pretty par for the course with him. He's not great at these types of video games. He's complained in the past about control schemes and various in-game systems being too complicated for him to follow. He's really more of a mobile game/simulator fan, so it's not surprising that he has difficulty following a game that's outside of the genre he normally plays.

GotG was my least favorite Marvel movie so far. it was just too cheesy for my taste, especially the ending. I would have been fine waiting to see it on NetFlix DVD but my wife wanted to see it in theaters.

Appearently Jason has never loved the vehicle driving segments in previous Uncharteds, you know like those completely new to the series ones in 4.

Also Brad is still talking about Until Dawn's "major choices" like he didn't stop playing that game 3 hours in. He mentioned a couple of times during GOTY that "even the killer can change" & the west crew had to tell him that wasn't true. Relatedly I have a feeling that Dans not gonna like the slow start to to that game.

This is my first Uncharted game and I had the same problem. I ended up dying a few times from jumping off ledges when I wasn't supposed to. But I am getting used to noticing what climbable scenery sticks out now. The bit Drew mentions about the rock slide caught me off guard at the time too because
I didn't think the game physics would allow me to slide sideways across the slope.

I have horrible DSP moments in Uncharted games. Funny thing is I have so much confidence in the devs' ability to lead players by the nose I solved one problem by jumping to my death on purpose, until the game had an NPC show me how I was supposed to slide on some rocks. Which is exactly what I expected to happen. It was a weird meta moment and oddly felt like I'd just solved a puzzle in an unintended way.

I only played the first Uncharted, but I seem to remember a really shitty jet-ski driving segment. It was the worst part of the game.

And it tastes fucking fantastic.

I always thought it more a Eastern European thing, but sure enough the stores around here drag it out pre-easter heading in to St. Patrick's Day. I love it, we will usually buy one or two and freeze it for later.

A good Corned Beef on Rye/Pempernickel, with swiss... shit I am getting hungry...

Ireland produced a lot of it but Irish people were generally too poor to afford it so it was never a staple of their diet. the whole corned beef on St Patrick's is an American thing. the Irish are more likely to have a sheppard's pie with lamb. i have Irish friends who will talk your fucking ear off about it.

Is Danny on any other podcast weekly?
He hosts The Lobby for gamespot which also releases as weekly podcast: https://twitter.com/dannyodwyer/status/698275877663051776
And he does a weekly youtube podcast with 2 friends where they (un)scientifically rank 3 games suggested by listeners and also talk a bit about games they've been playing: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbWbJP588hul3qv92mLcKx7ZxX8yfq18c

edit: oops I almost forgot about Danny's prime weekly podcast: Alt+F1 with GB's Drew, I started listening only a few months ago but it's really fun: http://f1.cool

...guess I need to play Doom. Must be an amazing feeling to work on a game that people aren't expecting much from like that and then to have it come out and people absolutely love it

Uncharted doesn't put all those hints in without reason. It's the product of environmental design that is more about figuring out developers intentions than anything else. Uncharted's environments are definitely something that can be confusing.

Cheesiness is why I liked it. Marvel movies that take themselves seriously are f*cking stupid.

Man, I wish someone would have engaged with Jason about Koihime Enbu. That game looks weirdly legit and mechanically interesting despite being a fighting game based on porn

Maximo and Ghost Trick were the shit.

Never took on Army of Zin though.

"What if Sora was there?"

"Sora never helped anything ever."

teeheehee

He aced that.

There was some Bombcast waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day (Sausalito basement era?) where they described a CoD that left the player alone at an environmental puzzle (kick a barrel down blocked stairs, shoot barrel, barrel explodes, way is clear) that is not prompted at aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall, leading to that lurch.

Tim Schafer said:
"You’re putting these little stones in a pond hoping someone will jump from one to the next one across the pond, but sometimes they just can’t see the next stone. You put it right in front of them. You put a sign pointing to it, but they just can’t see it. They're stuck, and they end up hating the game. They can instantly get very, very mad. And hopefully they’re not a game reviewer because at that point, you’ve just lost it all. So to solve that, you get another character to come out and say, "There’s a stone over there," and they player is like "Oh, ok." However, you’ve removed the entertainment by removing that confusion. It’s not entertaining to just execute a series of solutions. That’s the whole point of adventure games, happy confusion. If you have given the answer, you’ve taken that away from the player."

"I realized that when they were testing the second Psychonauts, they were doing so in the same kind of usability way: "Well no one knew what to do here." I was like, "What do you mean?" We tested out the Black Velvet level in Psychonauts. They said, "Well, it was good. People liked it and had fun, but there were periods where they were confused and they didn’t know what to do." I said, "Did they get stuck on the magic paintings that come to life when you hang them on the magic hook?" They were like, "Yeah, yeah. They have the paintings and they didn’t know how to hang them on the hooks." I was like, "Oh no - but eventually they did figure out how to hang them on the hooks, but they didn’t know which hooks to hang them on." They responded, "Yeah. Well, they tried them in a few different places and they eventually figured out which hooks to hang them on and then they got through it." I was like, "You just described solving an adventure game puzzle to me". All of those steps are the correct steps. What do I do with this inventory item? Let me try it here. That does something, but that’s wrong. Then you move it around in a new combination. Oh that works. Perfect!

Perspective and the framing "there is no guarentee of frustrationless play" is key

Personal hygiene activities in public are gross. Period. Go to a restroom for gods sake.

Clipping your nails is the worst since there is an audible annoyance which accompanies the filthy activity.

I liked GotG. Was a fun space adventure since I had zero knowledge of those marvel guys.

Winter Soldier was really good too though quite tonally different.

Jeff-less Bombcasts always sound more breezy and relaxed, like the staff are secretly relieved that he isn't there, being all negative and sarcastic about everything.

Brad especially must love being able to express an opinion without Jeff disagreeing with it as an automatic reflex. I've known people like that in real life and it is exhausting.

I like how Drew commented on Uncharted 2, saying how he didn't mind the supernatural elements/blue guys, and then later on the podcast explained how he's never actually played Uncharted 2, he experienced it all through video.

Well, that explains why those blue bastards didn't bug him.

I did notice a more relaxed tone this week, but I don't entirely agree with the rest of your assesment.

Either way, an enjoyable podcast this week. Was anyone else screaming at the podcast when they failed to mention Mega Man or Devil May Cry for Capcom titles that should be brought back proper.

I hope the shorter podcasts are not in preparation for shoter video podcasts.

I know they like to limit video to 2 hours for archival reasons / any longer and the risk of corruption rises and rises.

Also I liked the part when Danny mentioned the Uncharted 4 easter egg, Dan jumped to conclusions it was the Crash thing and then he mentioned a easter egg that flew over everyone head despite it being a repeating gag through out a chunk of the game.

Seriously the Guybrush / Monkey island stuff in U4 is pretty great.

I do find it weird when you hear them say they never finished a game, yet that person really pushed for it to win a category (or several?) in GOTY. I don't think you necessarily need to finish a game to think it did something well, but it just seems surprising. I guess I still just assume these guys finish everything, but they play way too many games to really expect that.

I don't know, I kinda agree with him. Jeff seems to have a very difficult time letting people talk about how much they enjoyed something without him interjecting why he dislikes it or has no interest in playing it. Hell, he even does this with games he doesn't play, like when he read a summary and shat all over Life is Strange's ending which kinda soured the GB Playdate video when they got to the end
